  • Patent number: 6692757
Abstract: A novel composition has been discovered for decontaminating biofilm-contaminated surfaces (the “Biocidal Complex”). The novel composition both kills bacteria and destroys at least a part of the biofilm. The composition comprises an effective amount of a free-radical generating compound (e.g., hydrogen peroxide), a disinfectant from the “GRAS” list of food-safe compounds (e.g., thymol), and an acid sulfate such as sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4) to acidify the solution and help catalyze free radical formation. A preferred method of using this invention employs a multi-component approach that permits long-term storage of the components in a stable, concentrated form. Immediately before use, the components are mixed and then applied to the biofilm-contaminated surface. A separate metal catalyst for the generation of free-radicals may be added to increase the production of free radicals in the Biocidal Complex.

  • Patent number: 6589545
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of controlling insect infestation whereby an insecticidal coating having an extended residual period of a few months to a year is applied to a surface. A removable cover may be positioned near the surface to create a substantially darkened region to exploit some insects' natural tendencies to hide in dark places during daylight hours. Alternatively, the insecticide may be applied prior to the hatching of the insect eggs to control the population upon hatching. The method is especially effective for controlling the presence of gypsy moth caterpillars on trees. The present method may be accomplished by covering a portion of a tree trunk with an insecticidal coating containing an active ingredient such as chlorpyrifos, pyrethroid, permethrin, or tralomethrin and covering the coated area with burlap. • Patent number: 6514963
Abstract: The present invention comprises methods and compositions for use in inhibiting egg production by parasitic trematode worms comprising administering to an individual in need thereof an effective amount of an agent which transiently inhibits the influx of calcium through a cell membrane calcium channel. Inhibition of egg production in the worms ameliorates many of the symptoms and pathology related to infection by trematode related diseases, including Schistosomiasis. The methods can also effect disease transmission by reducing the number of eggs released into the environment available to continue the worm life cycle.

  • Patent number: 6512012
Abstract: The application of film-forming compositions to aquatic sites, especially aquatic breeding sites for control of surface-active aquatic breeding insects other than black flies, especially for immature mosquitos, has been found to be enhanced when different compounds than those suggested in the prior art are used. The compounds according to the present invention comprise film-forming chemicals which are biodegradable, nonionic, insoluble or partially soluble in water, and include C6, C7, C8, C9, C10, and C11 alcohol ethoxylates, propoxylates, and/or alkoxylates with an average of one (1) to five (5) moles of ethylene and/or propylene oxide per mole of alcohol, and mixtures thereof. The compositions may be applied directly as liquids or released into the aquatic environment from a carrier, such as a biodegradable, water-erodible, water-soluble or water-dispersible carrier.

  • Patent number: 6495153
Abstract: An anti-fungal treatment, for use on skin, comprising an anti-fungal component and a skin treating component. The skin treating component either absorbs moisture on the skin to make an undesirable environment for the fungus, or treats the skin to allow the anti-fungal component to penetrate, allow the skin to heal, and to create an unpleasant, oily environment for the fungus. The anti-fungal component is a combination of goldenseal root powder with ipe roxo powder and poke root powder. The skin treating component is either a skin softening mixture, such as D-alpha tocopherol and olive oil, or is a dehydrator, such as arrowroot and ball clay. A further combined anti-fungal and aromatic component preferably comprises lavender oil, and may also comprise teatree oil.
