Patent number: 5672362Abstract: Dust mites are a pest that is present in most homes. Their fecal pellets are known to be a significant cause of allergies. A method for controlling dust mites includes providing a 5% disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) solution, and applying it to an infested surface, such as a carpet or bedding, with a hot water vacuum. The solution is applied evenly, and is partially extracted by the vacuum on the same stroke, so that the surface is left relatively dry. The application and extraction process also cleans the surface by removing dirt and a significant number of dust mites and their fecal pellets. The residual solution kills most of the dust mites, but it poses an insignificant health exposure to humans. After drying, the applied DOT also resists removal by subsequent dry vacuuming, so that it remains effective for many weeks.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1996Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Inventor: James Burnett

The present invention also discloses various means of using the compositions of the present invention which contain borate salts and further sets forth methods for preventing and/or mitigating staining caused, at least in part, by at least one anaerobic, facultative anaerobic, or microaerophilic microorganism.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1994Date of Patent: August 5, 1997Assignee: Buckman Laboratories International, Inc.Inventor: Richard W. Patent number: 5612094Abstract: Lumber, plywood and other wood products are preserved from attack by fungi, termites and wood-destroying insects as well as fire and flame by treatment with a novel zirconium borate-containing preservative composition. The preservative can be formed by combination of a source of boron such as boric acid and the water-soluble salts thereof with a water-soluble zirconium salt. The ZrO.sub.2 :B.sub.2 O.sub.3 weight ratio in the preservative composition is in the range of from about 0.75:1 to about 10:1.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1995Date of Patent: March 18, 1997Assignee: U.S. Borax Inc.Inventors: David M. Patent number: 5601849Abstract: Methods and compositions for protecting wooden members (components) against attack by destructive insects and fungi. The wood preservative is formulated as a paste and is applied in that form to an exposed surface of the member. The active ingredient is released by that same moisture which creates conditions conducive to destructive attacks on the wood. Boron-based active ingredients are preferred as are polyethylene glycol carriers for the active ingredient.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1995Date of Patent: February 11, 1997Assignee: Perma-Chink Systems, Inc.Inventors: Richard C. Dunstan, John F. Bartlett

Patent number: 5587221Abstract: A process for pretreating a carpet to give the carpet insecticidal, fungicidal and bacteriacidal properties, and the resulting carpet product. The process is incorporated into the carpet manufacturing process to eliminate the necessity of treating carpets subsequent to the manufacturing process. A portion of the carpet is saturated with a mixture comprising boric acid and a boron-containing salt dissolved in an aqueous solvent. A heat drying step is then used to drive off the aqueous solvent after which a portion of the boron-containing salt remains on the backing. The preferred mixture contains a combination of boric acid and borax in an aqueous solution. The ratio of boric acid to borax ranges from 0.5:1 to 3:1, and the percent strength of the borax/boric acid combination in the solution is preferably from 0.1% to 3.125%.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1994Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Inventors: T. H. McCamy, William H. H. Clark
