Abstract: A method for hooping and maintaining in compression a core by a sheath, with the sheath being made of a composite material and having an internal cross section which is less than an external cross section of the core. The core and the sheath are aligned by centering them with respect to each other, and a prior tensile force is exerted over the core to provide a suitable sealing between the portion in contact of each of the ends of the core and of the sheath. A pressurized fluid is injected into the sheath in a direction of the core, to increase the cross section of the sheath by expanding the sheath in a circumferential direction. The core is thereby gradually inserted into the sheath. When the insertion is complete, fluid injection is ceased and an expendable portion of the sheath is cut off.

Abstract: This invention relates to an injection moulding process for the manufacture of multi-layered articles, especially articles having barrier properties. The process includes clamping a thermoplastic film over the cavity of a mould of an injection moulding process, the film being capable of being stretched. The film is then stretched within the mould by inserting the core of the mould, preferably using a core in which a central part enters the mould and partially stretches the film prior to the remainder of the core entering the mould. The mould is then closed, excess film is trimmed off and polymer is injected into the mould cavity. The resultant article is a multi-layered injection moulded article which, depending on the characteristics of the film and injected polymer, may have barrier properties to oxygen, liquids or the like that are superior to articles moulded from only the polymer. The process is particularly useful in the moulding of containers having a depth:width ratio of at least 0.5.

A plunger chamber is substantially co-axial to the insert opening and communicates with the cavity via the insert opening, the plunger chamber having generally greater radial dimensions than the insert opening, thereby defining a generally inwardly-directed flange with respect to the walls of the plunger chamber. The surface of the flange remote from the cavity constitutes a seating surface within the insert opening. A resilient seal is fitted within the plunger chamber against the seating surface in proximity to the insert. A plunger is positioned within the plunger chamber for relative movement generally towards and away from the cavity to compress the resilient seal against the seating surface.

Abstract: An optical fiber (21) which has been drawn from a preform (22) is moved into and through a chamber (38) of a housing. A source of vacuum is connected to the chamber to prevent the attachment of air pockets to the optical fiber as it is being moved through the chamber and through an opening of a die. The die includes a flow path (55) which is substantially normal to the path of travel of the optical fiber and the die opening is substantially larger than the diameter of the optical fiber. The thickness of the flow path in a direction along the path of travel is sufficiently small so as to prevent the recirculation of the coating material in the vicinity of the point of application to the optical fiber. Also, the fiber draw rate, the pressure of the coating material the direction of the flow path relative to the longitudinal axis of the optical fiber and the diameter of the die opening are such that a gap forms between the coating material and the die.

Abstract: Prestressed concrete railroad ties are formed in molds which are supported by existing track near the area where they are to be installed. Each mold will form a number of ties. Reinforcing strands are located within a plurality of longitudinally spaced molds. Concrete is then poured into the molds and the ties are formed bottoms up in the molds. A group of ties are simultaneously removed from a given mold by a special extractor which first simultaneously clamps the reinforcing strands extending outwardly from a given mold, and then lifts the strands as a group from the mold by a suitable crane. Preferably the center of gravity of ties is spaced from a pivot point which will cause 180.degree. rotation locating the ties in upright position to be loaded on a railway car or other vehicle to take them to the site where they are to be installed.

Abstract: The apparatus includes a first female mold member defining a shaped mold cavity for receiving a plastisol layer or skin. A second mold member is pivotally disposed on the female mold member between an open and closed position. In the open position, the second mold member receives and holds thereon a portion of the plastisol skin extending from the mold cavity. An insert is positioned in the mold cavity by a third mold member such as a mold lid on which the insert is releasably retained. After the insert is positioned in the mold cavity, the second mold member is pivoted toward the mold lid to fold the skin portion thereon over and against an edge of the insert. The skin is folded adjacent the pivot axis of the second mold member. Foam can then be introduced and cured between the skin and insert.

Abstract: A method of and a casting bed for producing a concrete product, especially an endless concrete blank prestressed in at least two directions. In order to enable a prestressing wire to be arranged in position and tightened in a simpler manner, at least one prestressing wire is passed in a zigzag-like manner crosswise between at least two fixed sides of a casting bed to form a wire net and the wire net is tightened from a third side of the casting bed in the direction of both first-mentioned sides so that the wire net is stretched in two directions by means of a traction in one direction. Finally, concrete is fed on the bed to form a prestressed concrete blank. An apparatus intended for carrying out the method comprises a weaving device for stretching the prestressing wires continuously and in a zigzag-like manner crosswise between two parallel sides of the casting bed and for tightening of the wires in the longitudinal direction of the casting bed.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for producing sealing strips and similar profiled strips of rubber and rubber-like elastomers. Rubber-like profiled sealing strips for window or door openings are frequently provided with overlay strips to facilitate installation, to enhance the relative movements, or for aesthetic-visual reasons. The material of these overlay strips generally differs considerably from the material of the base main strip. The manufacture of such two-material profiles can be undertaken in a single extrusion step by joining and directly combining a prefabricated overlay strip with the main strip in the extrusion head of an extrusion press, where the shape is provided for the profiled strip. By stretching the overlay strip, the adhesion of the latter to the main strip is significantly improved.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing an optical fiber cable involves embedding a traction-resistant axial strength member of at least one wire of precipitation hardened martensitic steel in a rod of thermoplastic material extruded thereabout while forming longitudinal grooves or cavities in the periphery while subjecting the rod and the strength member to an initial axial traction stress, extending them by less than their elastic limits, disposing optical fibers in the grooves or cavities of the rod while still under axial traction stress, and removing the axial traction stress. An extrusion machine has a head terminating in an axial outlet. A fixed member extends around a rotary die supporting the die on bearings internally of the fixed member. The fixed member is fixed to the front face of the extrusion machine and supports a die inlet axially spaced from the front face and the head outlet to ensure that a small controlled amount of plastic material leaks radially at the gap to the exterior.
