  • Patent number: 4751029
Abstract: A system for molding elongated ribbon-like products from thermoplastic materials utilizing a plurality of molds which are moved in tandem along a production line. As the molds are moved along the line at successive stations they are, while open, thermally adjusted to a temperature suitable for forming the product to be molded and then a ribbon of plastic is deposited in them. They are then closed and cooled and reopened and the molded product removed. The system utilizes only enough molding pressure to assure distribution of the plastic to all parts of the mold cavity and shaping of the molded product to the geometric design of the mold. The system includes a transfer means for the molds which returns the emptied molds for recycling through the molding process.

  • Patent number: 4744935
Abstract: Process and apparatus for making a cable with filiform elements, such as protected optical fibers or electrical conductors, in open-helix configuration and embedded in a polymeric material. The elements are fed through an extruder where the polymeric material in a plastic state is extruded thereover. The polymeric material with the elements therein is twisted in alternate directions around the cable axis as such material is advanced. The polymeric material is cooled downstream of the extruder to fix the elements in open-helix configuration. The polymeric material may be so twisted by alternately rotating a portion of the extruder in contact with the polymeric material in opposite directions or if the cable includes a central rope, by so twisting the rope in advance of the extruder with a pulley engaging the rope and rotated in a direction transverse to the plane of rotation of the pulley and around the axis of the rope.

  • Patent number: 4740261
Abstract: An extrusion apparatus for providing a plastic jacket (32) about an advang cable core (23) which has been wrapped with a laminated metallic foil (76) includes dual core tubes. An inner one (86) of the core tubes extends into an extrusion chamber and has a free end portion (89) spaced from and disposed concentrically within an end portion (94) of an outer core tube (93). The foil, which is relatively cool and which functions as a shield (26), engages an inner wall of the inner core tube. This causes an overlapped longitudinal seam (78) of the shield to be maintained during the passage of the shielded cable core through the inner core tube. As a result, molten plastic material which is to form the jacket (32) is isolated thermally from the relatively cool shield and is prevented from being cooled prematurely prior to its being tubed about the advancing cable core.

  • Patent number: 4739210
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of and a device for simultaneously generating heat energy and oscillation energy. In the method heat is generated by induction heating and oscillations are created by means of at least piezoelectric elements. Previously a resonance circuit formed by a series connection of an inductive component and a capacitive, piezoelectric component has been used for the generation of oscillations only. A disadvantage of this kind of circuit has been that the circuit is difficult to control on account of the narrow resonance region of the piezoelectric element. This advantage is avoided in the solution according to the invention in such manner that one and the same resonance circuit formed by a series connection of an inductive and capacitive element generates both heat energy and oscillation energy.

Abstract: A system and method for the control of the density of extruded foam controls foaming based on the volume per unit time of extrudate being formed. A gear pump controls the flow of melt to the die. The pump speed provides an accurate measure of the volume per unit time of melt moving to the die. The speed and cross-sectional dimensions of the extrudate are measured to determine the volume per unit time of the extrudate. Since the unfoamed melt density times the volume per unit time of the unfoamed melt being delivered to the die is equal to the density of the foamed extrudate times its volume per unit time, a ratio of the density of foamed extrudate to unfoamed melt can be determined from the two volume per unit time calculations. Once the ratio for an appropriate foam density is determined empirically, density-affecting characteristics of the extruder can be controlled to bring the calculated ratio towards the desired ratio.

  • Patent number: 4554116
Abstract: In the manufacture of an optical cable element comprising a tube of plastics material loosely housing at least one optical fibre, a water-impermeable medium in a liquid or semi-liquid state is applied to an advancing optical fibre immediately upstream of an extruder in such a way and under such a pressure that the advancing optical fibre with water-impermeable medium therearound passes into the extruder. After a tube of polymeric material has been extruded around the advancing optical fibre and the surrounding water-impermeable medium in such a way that the internal diameter of the tube is greater than the overall diameter of the optical fibre and the extruded tube has been drawn down and so treated that the molecules are longitudinally oriented, the space in the tube not occupied by the optical fibre is filled with water-impermeable medium of a jelly-like nature.

  • Patent number: 4548567
Abstract: This invention relates to manufacturing a grooved cylindrical core by extrusion. The manufacturing device comprises a single rotating integral die that has a tapered rear portion and a grooved cylindrical front portion. The tapered portion surrounds a stationary central member and guides the material from a main extruder. The front portion has a bore including linear or helical channels. The sealing problems are obviated since the tapered portion and the grooved portion make up an integral die. This die further enables to produce a grooved core perfectly gauged. According to another aspect, the threads or stripes between core grooves are identified by means of auxiliary extruders feeding predetermined die channels with extrusion materials having different colours. This stripe identification is particularly used for a core constituting the central strand of an optical cable.

  • Patent number: 4537737
Abstract: A plasticizing screw (4) is used to feed raw material (rubber compound) in the cold state into a cylinder (2). The material is plasticized and warmed up by the screw (4). The cylinder (2) is constructed so that the raw material fed into the cylinder can by retraction of the piston flow through a non-return valve into the front of the piston. The piston then extrudes the material through a die. On leaving the die, the material is cut into blanks, using a cutting mechanism (11).Material in the cold state can be fed directly into the cylinder tanks to the plasticizing screw (4), which plasticizes and preheats the material. Volume control is achieved automatically in dependence with the advance of the piston (FIG. 1).
