  • Patent number: 5094600
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring eccentricities of a rod of plastic material extruded from an extruder includes an optical sensor arrangement having a central axis, the arrangement including a pair of optical sensor devices circumferentially spaced at 90 degrees to one another about the central axis and a pair of light sources disposed on sides of the central axis opposite to the respective optical sensor devices for providing shadows of the rod on the optical sensor devices. A mounting fixture supports the sensor arrangement with its central axis aligned with the nozzle axis of the extruder so that the extruded rod will travel along the central axis of the sensor arrangement. An output device is connected to the sensor devices for measuring deviations of the shadows from predetermined positions indicating concentricity of the rod.

  • Patent number: 5075061
Abstract: Polymeric material is plastified in an extruder and is then divided into a major part and a minor part. Either the major part or (more often) the minor part is modified by a chemical reaction, such as grafting (any necessary ingredients being added, if not already present). The major and minor parts are then recombined in an extrusion head so that the modified and unmodified materials form distinct parts of the product. In this way, a single extruder can be used to make, for instance, a product with surface characteristics modified by grafting, wire-covering with only a surface layer crosslinked, or heat-sealable crosslinked packaging film.

  • Patent number: 5062782
Abstract: Coextrusion apparatus for varying the inner profile of a generally tubular extrudate formed by a first stream of elastomeric material by an axially movable inner die ring which varies the size of an orifice and consequently the flow of a second stream of elastomeric material which is deposited on the inner surface of the tubular extrudate. A compensating ring is axially slidably mounted within the inner die ring and moves generally in an opposite direction to the movement of the die ring to compensate for pressure changes within the second stream of material caused by varying the size of the orifice, to provide an accurately controlled initiation and termination of the material. Pistons are formed integrally on the inner die ring and compensating ring and are located within annular fluid pressure chambers whereby the flow of fluid into the chambers will coordinate the movement of the die ring and compensating ring.

  • Patent number: 5047200
Abstract: A method of making a fire hose including the steps of extruding a tube having inner 12 and outer coverings of elastomeric material on a woven jacket made from woven synthetic textile yarns and having a weft which is unusually highly crimped. The extruded tube is placed in a confining mould or sheath having an internal diameter substantially the same as the external diameter of the hose, curing the material of the tube by internal application of heat and pressure, pressing the outer covering into tight engagement with the sheath. The sheath effectively prevents radial expansion of the hose during the curing and the outer covering is thus embossed with the surface topography of the inner surface of the sheath upon removal of the sheath. The hose thus formed has good diametral swell properties and consequently reduces the frictional forces in relation to the amount of water flowing through the hose.

  • Patent number: 5031568
Abstract: There is provided cross-head type die apparatus for applying a substantially concentric insulating layer to a conductor passing therethrough. Die assembly elements of novel structural combination are disposed within the substantially cylindrical cross-head such that they are in axial alignment with each other and the cross-head. In particular, a die insert or die tip has a front portion which tapers inwardly to substantially a point and includes an outlet orifice to guide the conductor along a passline towards a die orifice. A flow guide has a respective internal surface which tapers rearwardly to form a die orifice on its front surface. Cooperatively tapered surfaces securely fit the flow guide and the die tip within the cross-head axial bore such that a space is formed between the internally tapered surface of the flow guide and the front portion of the die tip. The die orifice and the outlet orifice of the die tip are axially aligned due to their respectively tapered fits within the cross-head.

Abstract: An improved process for manufacturing low density polytetrofluoroethylene insulated cable using a paste type extrudate to form a hollow tube of insulated material extruded about a wire conductor which passes through the extrusion die. As contrasted with earlier methods, the shaped extrudate paste is stretched before removing the extrusion aid substantially at ambient temperature with only residual heat imparted by extrusion by a driven pulley, the peripheral speed of which may be varied in accordance with the speed of the extrudate. With the completion of the stretching, the increased outer surface and porosity of the extrudate permits faster removal of the extrusion aid immediately prior to entering a sintering oven.
