Abstract: An apparatus for slush molding a thin shell having an outer layer and an inner layer. The apparatus includes two tubs alternately movable to a cast position for dispensing their respective material contents into a mold cavity. According to another embodiment of the invention, the apparatus includes a diverter valve configured to alternately open a passage from each of two tubs to the mold cavity to selectively dispense charge materials from the respective tubs into the mold cavity. In addition, a method is provided for forming a thin shell having an outer layer and an inner layer. A first polymer material is cast and allowed to melt on a heated mold surface to form an outer layer. A second polymer material is then cast and allowed to melt and form an inner layer on the inner surface of the outer layer. The shell is then removed from the mold.

Abstract: In a conventionally used injection molding apparatus, undried resin pellet is put in a drier of a predetermined temperature and water and gas in the undried resin pellet is completely removed, and the dried pellet deprived of water and gas is thrown into the injection molding apparatus. It is therefore necessary to carefully control quality of water and gas of pellet before pellet is thrown into the injection molding apparatus. In injection molding of undried resin pellet, evaluate injected resin, control operation conditions such as the feeding amount of pellet and the decompression degree, and determine the best operation conditions and the best accumulation amount wherein excellent articles are obtained. The accumulation amount of pellet fed in an injection molding chamber is detected, and feeding to the injection molding chamber is controlled upon the detection information.

  • Patent number: 6328920
Abstract: A plastic part having a complex structure as a first layer and a simple structure as a second layer, is formed using a method for molding. Initially, a single mold is provided, the mold having an interior cavity and a runner reaching from an exterior of the mold to the cavity. The mold is kept closed while a quantity of a first plastic material is injected via the runner into the interior cavity to form a first layer of the plastic part. The mold is then partially opened, creating an increased interior cavity section, into which a quantity of a second plastic material is injected, via the runner, to form a second layer of the plastic part. The solidified plastic part can then be ejected from the mold.

Abstract: An apparatus having a single screw extruder and a twin screw extruder. The extruders are designed to operate intermittently in a batch-type process. The single screw extruder contains a plurality of barrel segments with an internal cavity, an inlet and a transfer die located at an outlet. The barrel segments provide processing flexibility in that the L/D ratio of the single screw extruder can be varied to accommodate various materials, fillers and material throughputs. The twin screw extruder includes a body having an internal cavity disposed therein. The body includes an inlet at a first end, an outlet at a second end and an inlet located along the length of the twin screw extruder to accept fiber material (fibers) from a side stuffer. A transfer valve is connected to the outlet of the twin screw extruder. The transfer valve controls the flow of melt from the twin screw extruder into an injection plunger.

Abstract: A tool for injection molding of toothbrush bodies of two different plastics components comprises two mold parts which can be moved relative to each other and together constitute four groups of parallel mold cavities. One of the mold parts has a recess for each group of mold cavities. A mold insert fits into the recess. Partial cavities are formed in the mold inserts, which partial cavities each correspond to a head portion of a toothbrush body. A first plastics component is injected into a first pair of groups of the mold cavities and a second plastics component is injected into a second pair of groups of the mold cavities. The mold cavities of the first pair of groups are arranged on the one side and those of the second group are arranged on the other side of a rotatable carrier arm to which the mold inserts are fastened. The mold cavities are arranged in each group parallel to each other and so as to have the same orientation.

  • Patent number: 6274075
Abstract: Valve gated multi-cavity injection molding apparatus for five layer molding having actuating mechanisms for reciprocating elongated valve members between four different positions. Each actuating mechanism has a front and a rear aligned cylinders, a first piston connected to the head of one of the valve members in the front cylinder and second and third pistons in the rear cylinder. The third piston has a stem portion which extends forwardly through the second piston into the front cylinder. Hydraulic pressure from four hydraulic lines connected to each actuating mechanism reciprocates each elongated valve member between the different positions. In the first closed position, the front end of the valve member is seated in the gate. In the second position, the front end of the valve member is retracted sufficiently to allow an initial amount of PET to flow from an outer annular melt channel through the gate.

  • Patent number: RE37506
Abstract: A method and apparatus for molding plastic articles in two colors, particularly, the bodies of magnetic tape cassettes, in which a strong bonding force is provided between the two portions without having to form a recess and projection on the joining edges of the two portions. A slide core, which is moved in and out of a primary mold cavity between the mold of the two portions of the article, is provided with a tubular passage having an opening within the primary mold cavity along edge portions of the slide core. The slide core is fully inserted into the primary mold cavity to mold the first portion, then partially withdrawn to form a seconary mold cavity in which the second portion is subsequently molded. After molding the first portion, an adhesive is injected through the tubular passage along the edges of the first portion which will join corresponding edges of the second portion to thereby firmly join the two portions.
