  • Patent number: 5423669
Abstract: A gas fed catalytic heater is employed as a heat source in the thermoforming of shaped articles from a sheet of thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic sheet is fed from a continuous supply roll past an array of gas catalytic heaters in a heating section in order to soften the sheet prior to entering a mold for shaping the articles. A closed loop temperature control system is provided for controlling the pressure and hence the volume of gas entering the catalytic heaters and thus the emitted infrared radiation to automatically maintain the temperature of the thermoplastic sheet at a predetermined set value. The control system includes a temperature sensor for measuring the temperature of the sheet, a temperature controller for comparing the actual temperature of the sheet against a preset temperature and for producing an output signal that is proportional to the difference temperature and a gas modulating valve which is responsive to the output signal for adjusting the flow of gas to the catalytic heaters.

  • Patent number: 5409369
Abstract: An apparatus and method for making a wide angle light diffusing lens of the type which includes a peripherally extending lip for supporting the lens in a downwardly opening light fixture. The lens includes a downwardly and inwardly converging light translucent side walls as well as downwardly and inwardly extending end walls and which are connected together. These walls effectively form a prismatically shaped lens which permits dispersion of light from planes at a wide angle. The apparatus of the invention includes a form or mold having an upwardly extending rib on its upper surface which generally defines a lower edge of the lens and aids in defining the other edges of the prismatically shaped lens. A plastic sheet as, for example, an acrylic plastic sheet, is heated to a temperature where it softens and is somewhat flowable, moldable and bendable and which is then draped over the rib on the mold. A mold top is then disposed over the mold encapsulating the plastic sheet therein.

  • Patent number: 5360330
Abstract: A source of radio frequency energy is applied to a low thermal inertia heating element with high thermal conductivity, such as a spool, for rapidly heating the heating element to settable predetermined temperature, which temperature is maintained essentially constant. The heating element is detachably attached about the die of a mold for transferring heat to the die to form, mold, weld or extrude thermoplastic material placed within the mold. Thermal chokes restrict heat transfer from the die to the remainder of the mold. One or more heat sinks draws and dissipates heat from the thermal chokes to maintain cool zones of the mold. Following the heating cycle, upon termination of application of radio frequency energy to the spool, cooling may be accelerated by directing a stream of gas upon the heating element.

  • Patent number: 5118277
Abstract: An apparatus for forming the edge of containers of synthetic thermoplastic material which are open at the top and terminate in an outer flange which is arched upwards from the top and then extends downwards. The apparatus includes an edge moulding unit having four groups of three female moulds and the same number of male moulds, a rotating plate for the female moulds designed to rotate step-by-step to cyclically carry each group of moulds from a charging position, through a moulding position to a discharge position and a cooling position. A feed device having one or more groups of parallel heated screw-threaded rotating rollers are provided, each engaging a portion of the flanges of a sequence of containers in order to heat them and transfer the same from a stock of containers to the charging position. Compressed-air-nozzles are arranged to cause the container to move from the feed device to a female mould.

  • Patent number: 5066212
Abstract: An apparatus engages pre-cut lengths of heated thermoplastic pipe against a pair of eccentric wiper arms bending the pipes into elbows. The eccentric wiper arms have an eccentric portion and a constant radius portion. A bending form has an arcuate die adapted to hold a pre-cut length of pipe. Four such bending forms are radially connected to a rotation shaft which is journalled at each end to a support frame. A continuous supply of pre-cut lengths of pipe are transported through a heating chamber by a set of endless chains. Each pipe is then transferred to a bending form which is rotated by the shaft so that the cold end portions of each pipe engages the spaced apart and substantially parallel eccentric wiper arms. The wiper arms urge the end portion of each pipe length slightly beyond the outer edges of each arcuate die to compensate for the effect cooling has on each pipe length. Once the pipe is bent, the rotation of the bending form causes the pipe to drop into a tank of water.

  • Patent number: 5064598
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the manufacture of a pleated filter insert made of a thermoplastic material. The pleat walls are maintained at a distance with the filter pleats open in the direction of outflow of the filter insert by elongated ribs made of the filter material itself. The tape-like filter material is gathered in a first process step. The elongated ribs are produced by means of tension-free, permanent shaping of the gathered filter material, heated to a temperature which is below the shrinking temperature and above the deformation temperature of the filter material, between the jaws of a shaping device. The intermediate areas of the filter material intended for the forming of pleat wall edges are heated by at least one heater jaw to a temperature which is between the deformation temperature and the melting temperature until the irregularities of the filter material in the intermediate area have been smoothed out.

  • Patent number: 5034077
Abstract: Paint-coated polymeric films which are bonded to substrates such as automobile panels, as a substitute for spray painted finishes, often develop surface blemishes or defects from the coating or web handling operations. These can be reduced or eliminated by vacuum thermoforming the film to the desired substrate in a plural stage procedure. The periphery of the film is clamped in a frame. Then the film is preheated to a temperature above its glass transition temperature until the film becomes taut in the frame. It is allowed to cool and is then reheated to at least the glass transition temperature and is then vacuum thermoformed to the substrate. This procedure eliminates many if not all of the visible surface defects in the thermoformed film.

  • Patent number: 5020985
Abstract: A laminate bending device includes a pair of parallel shafts extending outwardly through transverse slots in a front wall of a housing. A pair of clamping jaws on the shafts each include an elongated slot for the insertion of a narrow strip of a laminate material of the type sold under the trademark FORMICA. Each of the shafts are mounted within the housing for linear and rotary movement. A spring biases each of the clamping jaws toward a stop on the front wall of the housing. In use, a strip of laminate material is inserted into the slots of the clamping jaws, the spacing of which has been previously adjusted to determine the bending radius. A heating element is then activated to heat the strip and allow the spring biased force on the clamping jaws to bend the strip to the desired radius. A cooling mechanism is activated upon completion of the bending to cool the strip and set the deformed shape.
