Rod Or Tubular Preform Patents (Class 425/392)
  • Patent number: 4474426
Abstract: In a known optical cable, optical fibers are loosely laid in a number of grooves formed within an elongate plastics extrusion. Typically the grooves follow a helical path with periodically reversing pitch, the helices centered on a central longitudinal axis of the cable. A primary reason for the helical lay is to prevent the fibers from becoming stressed should a bend occur in the cable. A further benefit of loose laying of fibers in a helical groove of periodically reversing pitch is that any elongation of the cable core is not immediately transmitted to the fiber supported by it. The fiber will move from its initial loose laid position both in a direction towards the inside curve of the helix and in a direction towards the base of the grooves. When it bears against the cable core over an appreciable length, the fiber will then be subjected to tensile stress.

  • Patent number: 4457975
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for fabricating insulated cables, particularly polymeric insulated electrical power cables, resistant to the formation and growth of electrochemical trees is disclosed. Internal pressure on the conductor side of the cable is maintained lower than the external pressure on the outer surface of the insulation during extrusion. Extrusion pressure higher than the external pressure results in expansion of the insulation following extrusion. This expansion or swelling reduces the number and size of cracks and voids which are precursors of electrochemical trees. In addition, pressure curing the extruded, insulated cable with a curing medium above its melting point followed by gradual gradient cooling under internal pressure and higher external cooling fluid pressure to around room temperature optimizes the resistance of the cable to nucleation and growth of electrochemical trees.

  • Patent number: 4456451
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fusing and shaping the end of a rope, cord or the like made of heat fusible fibers avoiding the enlarged or bulbous end which normally occurs when heated in a conventional manner. The method involves inserting the cut end of a rope into a cavity of a member wherein the cavity tapers inwardly in a direction from an open end thereof to a closed bottom end, heating the member to melt the end of the rope thereby fusing together the strands and cooling the heated end of the rope to set the fused ends and shape the same to the internal shape of the cavity. The apparatus is a thin-walled, metallic member conically shaped and located at the end of a handle. A flared sleeve is also provided in which the end of the rope to be fused is inserted to compress the strands together before being heated. The conical member maybe heated by a butane torch or the like or alternatively, an electric resistance heating element maybe incorporated in a stem projecting from the handle.

An important feature in stretching the tubing to the enlarged dimension is in assuring that it is done in a uniform manner and that the stretched walls are substantially parallel to each other. Abstract: A process for forming a mouthpiece on a preform formed from a tubular blank consisting of thermoplastic material, which is intended for the production of a container, e.g. by blow molding, whereby connecting means, such as a thread, which is adapted to a suitable form of closure of the container is formed on the outside of the mouthpiece. The process comprises inserting the blank between an outer mold section with a mold portion for the attachment surface of the connecting means and an inner mold section, whereupon a driven relative axial movement of the two mold sections relative to each other forces the material of the blank, in tightly enclosed manner, radially outwards into the mold portion for the attachment surface, and an axial head cup is provided.

Abstract: This invention relates to a machine for and a method of making building products from a coiled sheet of thermoplastic polymer such as polyvinyl chloride. In the practice of this invention, portions of the polymeric sheet are selectively and sequentially heated and progressively bent to the desired shape by passing the sheet through a series of heating, forming and cooling stations. The simplified design of the machine enables the user to custom fabricate building products at a construction site with a resulting savings in cost. Typical products adapted to be made in accordance with the invention are exterior building siding, siding accessories and other building products.

Abstract: A process and apparatus for putting a lip on a thick-walled tube of flexible material such as polyethylene comprises a cold rolling of the thick-walled tube with as little friction as possible on the wall of the tube. This is effected by vertically mounted rollers where the axis thereof is in substantial alignment with the axis of the tube being flared. At least one of the mandrels is rotated, and at least one of the mandrels is mounted for vertical movement and for putting pressure upon the wall of the tube during the rolling.

Abstract: Apparatus for use in the manufacture of socketed thermoplastics pipe by the radial expansion of a pipe blank. The apparatus includes an open-ended central mould portion 12 which can be raised or lowered on stanchions 10, 11 to three predetermined positions; a pair of mould end portions 15, 17 each having a supporting mandrel 19, 20 engageable with the pipe blank 28, end portions 15, 17 being advanceable to and retractable from the central mould portion 12. One of the mould end portions 15 is internally contoured to provide part of the socket-forming portion of the mould. The mould end portions 15, 17 can be held in an intermediate position, partially advanced towards the central portion 12 to locate the blank 28 on mandrels 19, 20 before closing of the mould.

  • Patent number: 4308225
Abstract: Plastic pipe is continually produced from a curable resin on a plurality of horizontal mandrels which are repeatedly simultaneously moved between plastic pipe production stations. There is at least one station for applying resin to a mandrel, at least one station for curing resin on the surface of a mandrel, and at least one pipe removal station for removing pipe from a mandrel. The pipe stations are substantially radially equidistant from a central horizontal axis and are circumferentially spaced apart by substantially equal increments around the horizontal axis. Each mandrel is progressively rotated between the stations. The temperature of each mandrel is controlled by passing a fluid through the mandrel. Heating fluid passes through mandrels in resin cure stations and cooling fluid passes through mandrels in resin application and pipe removal stations. A control system minimizes mixing of the cooling and heating temperature control fluids when the mandrel is rotated between stations.

  • Patent number: 4302176
Abstract: A device for expanding flexible tubes and similar elastic articles including a cable, hydraulic or air actuated cam coupled to move projecting fingers for expanding the elastic article. The device includes a housing pivotally mounting two opposed parallel blocks, each of which includes a cam follower surface and a projecting finger. Initially, the spreading finger elements are inserted into a tube or other elastic article and the cam is moved against the cam follower to pivot the blocks away from one another. At that time, the attached fingers also rotate away from one another and act to expand the tube or elastic article. The housing is constructed to enable the cam and drive to be interchanged for cable, hydraulic, or air cylinder actuation.

Abstract: The serrated end portions of the barrels of catamenial tampon inserters are permanently deformed into a substantially hemispherical shape by applying heat and pressure thereto in depressions provided at the periphery of a container which accommodates a confined body of liquid, such as silicon oil, and a heating device which maintains the temperature of the body of liquid within a predetermined range. The heating device includes an electric heater which extends only over a part of the trajectory of movement of the deforming depressions. The barrel preforms are supplied to alternate depressions of an odd number of depressions and the final assemblies are discharged only after they have completed more than a full circle about the axis of rotation of the container.

  • Patent number: 4299274
Abstract: A thermal energy storage device and method for making the same. The thermal energy storage device is in the form of a sealed tube-like container such as a tube-like cylinder or other geometrical configuration partially filled with a phase change material such as calcium chloride hexahydrate. The cylinder is made of tubular high density polyethylene and more particularly an ultra high molecular weight high density polyethylene having a molecular weight of about 500,000 to 700,000 which is tough, chemically resistant, withstands low and high temperatures, acts as a moisture vapor barrier and can be fused and sealed. The calcium hexahydrate is filled in an open top cylinder, closed at the bottom by dissolving two parts of calcium chloride dihydrate with one part of water to provide calcium chloride hexahydrate in liquid form. The cylinder is filled to about 90% by volume and a cap of the same material is then preheated to about fusion temperature.
