  • Patent number: 5725890
Abstract: A mechanism for forming a distal face of a fiber-optic core uses a motor to drive a lifter which has an upper protrusion and a lower protrusion. A first seat having a fiber-optic core-securing clamp provided thereon and a second seat having a heater are forced to move upward and downward, respectively, by the upper protrusion and the lower protrusion until the heater and core engage a mirror plate with a plurality of recesses provided therein. By virtue of moving the first seat and the second seat with the lifter, the heater heats the mirror plate and, after the first seat descends and engages the core with the mirror plate, a distal face of the fiber-optic core is formed as a male equivalent of the recesses of the mirror plate.

  • Patent number: 5700489
Abstract: An external stabilizer employed in a plastic film blowing apparatus incorporates one or more extruded members that carry a low-friction plastic wear cover. A tubular die, fed with a supply of molten thermoplastic polymer, extrudes a tube of the molten polymer and injects air into said extruded tube to inflate the tube into a bubble. The wall of the tube expands into a film of a desired thickness; and the tube is drawn vertically upward and collapsed and flattened. The external stabilizer is positioned on a frame surrounding the extruded tube above the die to keep the tube aligned on a predetermined path as the tube is drawn upwards. The stabilizer includes at least one extrusion of a light-weight material having a profile that is rounded on a side that faces the extruded tube so that said extrusion has a rounded front surface. The associated wear cover is made of a wear resistant plastic material and is disposed on said rounded front surface of said extrusion.

A pair of aligners (110, 112, FIG. 6 ) is provided that are each mounted at a forward edge of the board in alignment with a peg hole (22) of the board. The board is mounted on support guides (62, 64) of the press, and the board is slid forwardly until a pair of forming tips (52) are received in slots (124) of the aligners to sidewardly align the board. The support guides are then moved sidewardly so board guide pins (74A, 76A, FIG. 2 ) move against side edges (80, 82) of the board. Thereafter, the aligners are removed, a connector (14) is placed on the board with its pegs projecting down through the board holes, and the board is again placed in the press on the support guides.

Abstract: An oscillating hauloff device for removing blown film from an extruding apparatus. The oscillating hauloff includes a stacked ring arrangement which provides a compact and stable structure. The turning bars and idler rolls are encompassed in the ring structure and are arranged to cancel effects of web wandering and wrinkling. A method for making the oscillating hauloff, including CNC machining of annealed ring-shaped weldments, that is economical and simple to manufacture. The turning bars are provided with reinforcements that prevent deflection of the turning bars during use. Further the turning bars are provided with flow restricted outlets and axially extending channels to supply uniform air pressure to float the blown film on the turning bars. A specific arrangement for providing utility services to the oscillating hauloff is also disclosed which employs torsional deflection of the loads during rotation of the rings.

Abstract: A mandrel for making a rigid tubular article that has integrally-formed straight and arcuate portions. The mandrel has a plurality of shape-providing elements slidably disposed on interconnected straight and arcuate rods. After a rigid tubular article has been formed about the mandrel, the shape-providing elements can be slid off the straight and arcuate rods so that the mandrel can be removed from the rigid tubular article's interior. This provides for easy separation of the mandrel from the tubular article.

  • Patent number: 5346655
Abstract: An optical coupler using round optical fibers whose ends have been formed into a predefined shape to allow greater physical packing densities in order to achieve greater uniform illumination efficiency. The interstitial space between optical fibers is greatly reduced by thermoforming the ends of round optical fibers in a mold that makes a gradual transition from a circular shape to the predefined shape to avoid optical loss. Since the change in shape is gradual, the total cross-sectional area of the fibers remains constant; and optical loss is minimal because there is no reduction in mode volume. The predefined shape may be substantially square or rectangular. The core and cladding materials of the optical fiber are carefully chosen with respect to the glass transition state temperatures of both materials because the temperature at which the materials are formed by a mold are slightly above the glass transition state of the core or cladding, whichever is higher.

Abstract: A shutter door assembly assembled primarily from extruded plastic components is provided. The shutter door assembly includes an outer rectangular frame surrounding a pivotally attached vaned panel door. Various side, top, and bottom legs of the frame and door are constructed of a hollow extruded plastic and are securely mounted together to form a rigid, durable shutter door. The resulting shutter door has the general look and feel of an actual wooden door. An after-former device for forming extruded tubes for use in the shutter assembly is also provided. The after-former system mounts to a standard circular extrusion head, and converts a circular tube of extrudant to a desired noncircular shape, such as a rectangular shape. The after-former has a conical conduit, with an entrance aperture having a circular shape for receiving the initial extrudant and an exit aperture having the desired noncircular cross-section.

Abstract: An apparatus for continuously winding a length of material into a helical form includes a frame structure and a plurality of rollers mounted on the frame structure. Each roller has a non-grooved surface with portions of a different diameter, a longitudinal axis and oppositely positioned first and second ends, and the plurality of rollers are arranged about a winder axis in a substantially circular fashion. The rollers are individually rotatably driven and the first and second ends of each roller are offset with respect to one another as viewed from one end of the respective roller along a line parallel to the winder axis and passing through the longitudinal axis of the respective roller at the one end of the respective roller. The method includes continuously feeding a length material onto a plurality of rollers that are arranged in a substantially cylindrical manner about a winder axis so that the outer surfaces of the rollers define a cylindrical winder surface about which the material is to be wound.
