  • Patent number: 4285904
Abstract: A method of closing or sealing a filler passage formed in a neck or stem protruding from the small access opening in the upper end of a substantially closed centrifuge tube. The neck is formed of a readily fusible material and a heat conductive cap member is positioned over the open end portion of the neck closely confining it therein. Heat and pressure are applied to the cap causing progressive portions of the neck to melt and fold into the filler passage where it forms a molten mass within the filler passage above the access opening to the tube. Heat and pressure are removed, permitting the cap to cool and the molten mass to solidify completely sealing or filler passage of the centrifuge tube. The cap is then removed and the centrifuge tube is fully prepared for centrifugation.

Abstract: A device for the production of corrugated, protective separators for batteries which are made of woven polyester material. The device is provided with two alternating sets of shaping rods and two sets of clamping jaws which are movable in both the vertical and lateral direction. A third set of jaws is movable only in the vertical direction. The shaping rods are inserted into alternating channels in the material while the material is securely held by the clamping jaws and the material is hardened by means of a furnace. Once the channels are heat set, the shaping rods are withdrawn and the separator is severed by means of a cutting unit. A new piece of material is then positioned for similar fabrication.

  • Patent number: 4068999
Abstract: In a blown tube process of producing thermoplastic film or sheeting, the blown tube is collapsed by passing it through a trapezoidal frame assembly to change the circular cross section of the tube to a square cross section. The square cross section tube passing from the trapezoidal frame assembly is then passed through a predeterminedly controlled flattening transition section to a pair of nip rolls in a manner that the film arrives at the nip rolls with minimal stretching.

  • Patent number: 4063862
Abstract: A forming apparatus comprising mold parts adapted to fit inside a tube to shape a groove or other profile therein. The parts are segments of the periphery arranged in at least two groups, such that the parts of one group alternate with the parts of the other group. The first group of parts is undercut to provide pockets in which the second group may rest when the mold parts are retracted. The first group is extended first, leaving spaces therebetween which are filled by the second group when they are extended. A mechanical actuation of the parts is disclosed in one embodiment and fluid-actuation is disclosed in a second embodiment.

  • Patent number: 4061458
Abstract: A continuously travelling web of material is processed at longitudinal intervals between a pair of confronting transverse processing tools. The tools are mounted on carriers guided in pairs on endless chains to follow a path composed of two parallel straight sections joined at the ends by semi-circular sections, the latter being relatively adjustable. The chains are guided on adjustable sprockets so that their runs are parallel and overlap. Confronting extensions of interconnecting hinge pins for the links of the chains are engageable in recesses provided in the tool carriers.

  • Patent number: 4054402
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a sheathing material comprises a mandrel containing magnetically conductive material, and a plurality of spaced magnets. The magnets contain aligned circular apertures. The mandrel is centered within the apertures by a magnetic field applied substantially uniformly around the periphery of the mandrel. The mandrel is thus supported in a freely suspended manner. Sheathing material can be inserted onto the freely suspended mandrel and advanced freely therealong so as to be treated while mounted on the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4053275
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making flexible rubber tubing with axially spaced annular or helical corrugations. A sleeve of uncured vulcanizable rubber is slipped over a forming mandrel and an external form comprising a length of flexible, corrugated, axially compressible rubber tubing is positioned over the sleeve. The interior wall of the external form defines a shaping surface for use in forming embryonic corrugations in the sleeve. The sleeve is radially expanded into the shaping surface and the form and sleeve are axially compressed concertina-fashion to increase the radial dimensions of bulged portions of the sleeve between the corrugations of the external form to make embryonic corrugations in the sleeve. The sleeve and external form are then removed from the forming mandrel and the sleeve is placed on a curing mandrel with the corrugations at desired spacings, after which the sleeve is cured.

  • Patent number: 4042315
Abstract: A method and apparatus for making concrete pipe and, more particularly, for the vibration treatment of concrete pipe for compaction and residual stress relief. A concrete pipe is formed within an external jacket employing a rotary packerhead method wherein the jacket is positioned vertically and the packerhead is moved progressively upwardly within the jacket rotating and distributing mix radially outwardly and troweling the internal surface of pipe under formation. On completion, the green pipe is removed from the pipe making machine and transported to and above a hollow vertically split and radially expandable and contractable cylinder. The pipe is lowered about the cylinder with the latter in a contracted condition, the cylinder is expanded into engagement with the pipe internal surface, and a vibrating means within the cylinder is actuated to vibrate the pipe throughout its length.
