    Abstract: The invention concerns a process and an apparatus for the production of hollow bodies from thermoplastic material, the wall of which is in the form of a laminate, by extrusion blow molding. Tubular preforms for making the hollow bodies are first produced in an intermittent mode of operation, the wall thereof also being in the form of a laminate which includes a suitable number of layers. Within an extrusion head having an annular storage chamber for receiving the laminate-formation preform and an annular piston for emptying the storage chamber, the flows of material for forming the layers of the laminate of the preform are passed through the annular piston into the storage chamber in which they combine to form the laminate. The width of the outlets at which the flows of material issue from the annular piston can be so selected that it is proportional to the thickness of the respective layers to be formed therefrom in the laminate produced in the storage chamber.

    Abstract: Apparatus in which glue is applied to an endless thread by running the thread successively through the bore of a nozzle needle and a nozzle aperture and, when the nozzle needle is retracted from a valve seat, coating the thread with glue which has been forced out of a surrounding chamber. The thread, together with this coating, passes through the nozzle bore. As soon as the nozzle needle is advanced up against the valve seat in the nozzle element, the glue feed ceases and coating ends, so that the thread takes with it at most only very small quantities of glue remaining in the nozzle bore and an exact cutoff of the glue coating is obtained. When the glue is injected around the thread, that is, when the glue is brought together with the thread under a specific pressure exerted on all sides, it is possible to obtain a substantially uniform coating of the thread surface with glue which allows all improved bonding of the thread over its length to the sheet-like structure.

    Abstract: An extrusion die assembly for making honeycomb structures of ceramics, glass, and other extrudable materials. The assembly is provided with an apertured, flow controlling forming plate placed against the input (upstream) surface of the extrusion die. The forming plate has a central opening through which the batch material to the input face of the die passes. A series of angularly spaced, flow controlling openings lies radially outwardly of the rim of this central opening. These forming plate openings are axially aligned with a shim reservoir downstream of the discharge slots of the die. This arrangement permits both the flow volume and rate of the batch material being extruded to the skin forming portions of the die assembly to be at least partially independently controlled relative to the flow volume to the main, radially central portion of the extrudate.     Abstract: The extrusion press comprises a block and a displacing body mounted in the block. The block includes an inlet duct, two feed ducts connected to it, transversely widened spaces connected to them and an outlet duct. The displacing body comprises a mounting portion and a guide portion and is located downstream of the inlet duct. It separates both feed ducts and both transversely widened spaces and projects with a sword-like piece of the guide portion into the outlet duct to form outlet gaps. It ends upstream of a mouth of the outlet duct providing an inner expansion chamber. The displacing body is free of a supporting member and held fixed from above and below by its mounting portion so that the thermoplastic material flow surrounds the sides of the sword-like piece running in the flow direction and surrounds the sword-like piece.

The concentric mandrels have a spider with members for its radial adjustment. The cooling mandrel has substantially annular channels for a coolant, comunicating with each other by means of a sharply skewed opening and combined into a number of sections to control intensity of heat exchange.

    Abstract: A method of materials processing (e.g. polymer extrusion) in which the material flows along an axially extending passageway. A pressure differential is established across the passageway transverse to the axial flow direction so as to create a flow of material through the die which has a velocity component transverse to the axial flow direction. Preferably the pressure differential transverse to the extrusion direction is continuous thereby estabilshing a continuous change of velocity component transverse to the axial flow direction. Preferably also there is at least one reversal of transverse pressure differential (and hence transverse velocity component). Apparatus for performing this method comprises for example, successive sections (3-5) of identical trapezoidal cross section with adjacent ones of these sections having their cross-sections displaced through 180.degree. relative to each other.

    Abstract: A device for manufacturing molded articles of plastics material which have an outer skin of a plastics material free of expanding agents and a porous core of a plastics material containing an expanding agent includes an extruder head with a main duct in communication with a discharge opening. Two feed ducts for the two plastics materials lead angularly offset into the main duct at locations axially spaced from the discharge opening and from each other. A closing needle is axially movably placed in the main duct. The two feed ducts can be separated from the main duct by means of the closing needle. The closing needle defines a connecting duct extending essentially in axial direction. The connecting duct ends at the end face of the closing needle and at the circumference of the closing needle radially toward the more remote feed duct.

A lip gap is defined between a flexible lid and a stationary lip respectively provided for the upper and lower die blocks. The lower end of a bolt extending through the heat displacing unit is normally in contact with or secured to the flexible lip while the upper end is secured to the upper portion of the heat displacing unit. In a modified embodiment the bolt is air cooled.

    Abstract: An enclosure having a self-supporting side wall formed of a plurality of laterally spaced ribs with non-self-supporting thin webs therebetween whereby the ribs and webs cooperate one with the other to provide an enclosure having shape-retaining characteristics. A bottom wall is provided constituting an integral extension of the side wall with the ribs being scored at the juncture of the side and bottom walls to permit the material to be folded such that the side wall and bottom wall lie generally normal one to the other. The enclosure has a closure portion including either a substantially rigid portion having a neck with an opening or a self-supporting rib and web closure terminating in the neck and opening. A cap is provided for sealing the enclosure. Blow molding and blown film techniques are used to form the enclosure.

    Abstract: A vertical plastic parison extruder with a relatively short vertical height and an adjustable choke between the extrusion screw and the extrusion die. The choke, in combination with a vertically moveable mandrel extending into the extrusion die, frictionally dissipates the rotational component of the moving viscous plastic between the extrusion screw and the exit of the extrusion die. The relatively short length and large diameter of the extrusion screw permits the moveable mandrel to extend through the extrusion screw and eliminates the need for lateral support of the extrusion screw and mandrel below the material feed entrance to the extrusion screw. The extrusion screw length to diameter ratio is adjusted to provide the same residence time for plasticizing the feed material as with the normally smaller diameter and longer extrusion screws.

    Abstract: A fixing in a wall is made by drilling a hole, inserting the pin of a nozzle mounted on a hot melt gun into the hole and injecting molten polypropylene into the space between the pin and the hole. The polypropylene is allowed to solidify and the nozzle is removed leaving a wall plug ready for the insertion of a screw. Three embodiments of a nozzle especially adapted for use in this process are described. nozzle has a hollow screw-threaded base with a pin extending forwardly therefrom. Passageways in the base each communicate at one end with the interior of the base and at another end externally of the base and the pin in the vicinity of the junction between the pin and the base. A flexible seal is slidably mounted on the base and resiliently biased towards the pin.

    Abstract: A multipiece die for extruding honeycomb structures that facilitates a variation of geometries in the formation of honeycomb structures by reducing the amount of machining necessary to change die configurations for different honeycomb arrangements. The die has at least two sets of channel forming pins which are supported from separate die bodies. The channel forming pins when brought together with the separate die bodies define a series of discharge slots by which the extrudable structure is ejected from the die. A plurality of cavities communicate extrudable material from inlet and outlet sides of each die body. The cavities in downstream die bodies, downstream being taken with respect to the flow of extrudable material, are made with sufficient size to allow pins depending from upstream die bodies through the cavities while still allowing enough open area to provide a feed passage for the extrudable material.
