    Abstract: An accumulator head for a blow molding machine uses an electromechanical drive assembly for the purging and programming functions. The purging actuator of the drive assembly includes a ball screw and nut assembly in which the ball screw is rotated by an electric motor to move the ball nut assembly vertically and operate the plunger of the accumulator. A second ball screw and nut assembly is included in the programming actuator of the drive assembly for moving the mandrel vertically, thereby controlling the size of the die outlet opening of the accumulator. Preferably, the ball screws of the programming and purging actuators are axially aligned with the nut assemblies each carried by a yoke that travels on guide rods. Four support rods are provided to maintain alignment and provide stationary mounting for the respective motors. The structure has sufficient rigidity to supply the force required for the purging operation, but uses no hydraulic actuators.

Alternatively, the extrusion head can include a fixed jaw where the sealing ledges or shoes slideably and sealingly contact the plate.

The sleeve abuts the step (26) thereby locating the end fitting outlet correctly. No locking means is necessary between the end fitting and the core in the region of the nozzle. Attachment may be effected between them at a location downstream of the point at which extrudate is extruded into the mold tunnel. Hence, attachment is not hampered by the presence of extrudate and the attachment (40, 20, 25) may not interfere with the flow of extrudate.

In a second preferred embodiment, a moveable ring with a central aperture is disposed within the extrusion chamber coaxially with the mandrel. The ring is capable of reciprocal motion in the direction of extrusion. During extrusion, when the moveable ring is moved toward the die opening, it constricts the outer diameter of the tubing thus formed.

    Abstract: An extrusion die and flow control method incorporates a flow control in the form of a flow diverter which extends transversely across the flow path. The diverter forms part of a window upstream of the die lips and provides a slight tapering enlargement which may be moved along the window across the flow path from one side to the other or preferably, from the center symmetrically outwardly, or vice versa, to divert flow from the center proportionally to the edges without changing the total cross sectional area of the window. The window is formed by a pair of axially rotatable cylindrical bars recessed in the die body which each have a flat forming the enlargement. In the preferred form the flat is helical. The helical flats are opposed or matched so that as the bars contra-rotate synchronously the enlargement will move across the window.

The helical screw is preferably supported at both ends by a bearing means. Breaker bars are mounted on the transverse plate and extend over the gap between the discharge opening and the plate. Breaker bars may also be mounted to the cylindrical sleeve and extend over the gap between the sleeve and the plate.

It further includes: a rod connected to the core provided at the cross head; a female threaded portion formed on the upper portion of the rod; a rotating rod having a male threaded portion threaded into said female threaded portion; a reduction gear connected to said rotating rod through a thrust bearing; and the motor connected to the reduction gear. Since the core forming the ejection orifice for ejecting the parison is displaced through a motor, a reduction in the size thereof and saving of resources may be achieved and a high quality parison may be obtained as compared with a conventional parison controller which uses a hydraulic system.
