  • Patent number: 6129539
Abstract: A material transfer arrangement having a pair of generally cylindrical adjacent rolls which are counter-rotatable about their respective cylindrical axes and which define therebetween a nip between which material passes is disclosed. There is a corresponding pair of spaced apart doctor blades, each in close proximity to a corresponding one of the rolls so that material may be conveyed between the roll nip and the space between the doctor blades. In one form, the nip passes material to the space between the doctor blades and that space has a downstream restriction which causes the material to compress in an accordion-like way forming a corrugated material web. In another form, the doctor blades function to deliver thermoplastic extrudate to the nip between the rolls to form elongated sheets or webs of plastic material of improved uniformity.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for controlling the size of a gap through which material is metered. The gap is defined by a rigid surface and a flexible surface connected to at least one actuator for deforming the flexible surface. A plurality of sensors are positioned along the rigid or flexible surfaces to detect the other of the surfaces and generate signals indicating its position. A computing unit in communication with the plurality of sensors processes the signals to generate a continuous gap measurement profile. The computing system also stores a pre-determined desired gap measurement profile. Abstract: A machine and method of extruding a fastener product is disclosed. The product has a continuous, sheet-form base and rows of discrete fastener elements that extend from a side of the base, and is formed by extruding a molten polymer through an extrusion die defining a die opening comprising a base opening for extrusion of the base of the product, and, contiguous therewith, a series of fastener element openings for extrusion of the rows of fastener elements, each fastener element opening having a profile configured to form oppositely directed sides of the discrete fastener elements of one row. While extruding the product, flow of polymer through the fastener element openings is periodically interrupted while continuing the flow of the polymer through the base opening, thereby forming rows of upstanding fastener elements integrally extruded with a sheet-form base. According to this construction, it is possible to change the width of the flat hollow parison extruded from the clearance between the core and the die by sliding the both ends of the die in the width direction and replacing the core upon expansion and contraction of the core in the width direction. Further, if the flat core is constructed from a planar replaceable portion and curved (three dimensional) non-replaceable portions and only the planar replaceable portion is exchanged upon replacement, preparing a plurality of inexpensive-to-manufacture planar replaceable portions having different lengths is enough and the cost is reduced.

A continuous length or flow of a malleable or fluent material is provided to a forming apparatus which shapes the material, producing a contiguous series of smoothly blended, properly contoured portions of the desired shape. The formation of a shape relies on continuous control of shape-determining variables: the instantaneous cross-section of the shape in a virtual transition surface between the formable and formed material, the rate-of-change of cross-sectional dimensions between sequential cross-sections, the instantaneous angle of movement of the material at any point on the cross-section in the transition surface, and the rate of movement away from the transition surface of the just-stabilized portion of the shape. Abstract: A rod 3 is driven forward to open an annular slit 5 between a die 2 and a mandrel 4 and the molten resin in a resin accumulation chamber 10 is expelled from annular slit 5 to form a parison. In this operation, the die 2 is displaced from an original position adjoining to the mandrel 4 (axially aligned position) upon opening of the annular slit 5 to correct for any variation in thickness of parison P to be extruded from the annular slit 5. Then, the molten resin accumulated in accumulation chamber 10 is expelled from annular slit 5 to form parison P. The die 2 is then reset to the original position to bring the die 2 and mandrel 4 into axial alignment. Therefore, as the rod 3 is driven back, the annular slit 5 can be closed tight by the mandrel 4 to prevent resin leakage. After closure of the annular slit 5, molten resin is accumulated again in the accumulation chamber 10 and the annular slit 5 is opened. This procedure is repeated to produce parisons on an intermittent basis.

  • Patent number: 5776251
Abstract: In a duplex type coating apparatus, a left-right pair of dies and are disposed on opposite sides of a carrying path of a web, the dies and are each made up of an upper member and a lower member, a tip part of the lower member projects further toward the carrying path than a tip part of the upper member, and coating liquid discharge passages are inclined in the direction of the carrying path of the web. As a result, because the same amount of coating liquid is discharged from each of the dies and coated onto each side of the web, it is possible to carry out coating at the same coating thickness and in the same position on both sides of the web.

Abstract: In a method of manufacturing moldings and an apparatus therefore, a ridge piece 20 protrudes from a molding main body 10 of a molding 1 in a lip manner is removed gradually from a leading end side to a root side by a lip removing piece 33 moving together with a second die 32 which changes the extrusion contour of the molding main body 10, then the ridge piece 20 is removed by the movement of the second die 32 without decreasing the thickness of the ridge piece 20 thinning. Accordingly, the ridge piece 20 can be removed effectively by the simple operation and apparatus without requiring the operation such as the after-treatment, which can result in the improvements of the productivity of the molding 1, the appearance of the molding 1, and the reliability.

  • Patent number: 5770129
Abstract: An apparatus and method for controlling mass flow in an extrusion die provides cross-directional measurements of at least one property of an extrusion produced by the extrusion die, such measurements being made at a plurality of cross-directional locations that successively span the extrusion. The measurements are assembled to provide cross-directional profiles of the extrusion. A spatial-frequency splitter operates upon the cross directional profiles to separate selected spatial frequency component profiles from each cross-directional profile. A reference profile is provided for representing desired spatial frequency profiles. An error signal generator generates error signals representing the difference between the spatial frequency component profiles and the desired spatial frequency profiles and actuators control mass flow components of the extrusion die in response to the error signals.

  • Patent number: 5718858
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for producing a long fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin compositions by initially loosening a continuous fiber bundle by a fiber loosening device so as to form a moving web-like continuous fiber bundle. At least one side of the moving web-like continuous fiber bundle which passes through the die is coated with a thermoplastic resin melt extruded through a slit disposed in the die by an extruder. The slit has substantially the same width as that of the web-like continuous fiber bundle to provide an even supply of the resin melt in the width direction of the web-like continuous fiber bundle. However, the slit has a spacing which changes at a point in the widthwise direction of the web-like continuous fiber bundle so as to be increased as the point is more remote from a feed port and have a constant spacing in the flowing direction of the thermoplastic resin melt.
