In blowing the bottle (26') the label (23) is strongly pressed against the bottle wall, because the label is held by the inner wall (31) of the blow mould.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for forming, filling and hermetically sealing a blowmolded container having a sterile integral inner dispensing outlet, all in a single sterile operation. The method is directed toward establishing a preferably hermetic seal between the inner dispensing outlet and the container neck, by establishing the seal early in the blowmolding cycle. This is accomplished by mounting the dispensing outlet-defining tubular member about a unique fluid supply mandrel. The supply mandrel thereby also serves as a check and the tubular member of the to-be-formed container serves as a tool in blowmolding. The dispensing outlet/container neck seal is thus formed before the blowmolding step.

    Abstract: Long lengths of a heat-shrinkable sleeve for use in splicing electrical cables and the like are made in a continuous process. The sleeve is formed around a permeable core, and the core and sleeve are advanced together in an axial direction, the leading end of the advancing sleeve being hermetically sealed. The core and sleeve pass through a heating station, thereby heating a portion of at least the sleeve, and a fluid is introduced under pressure into the core, thereby internally pressurizing the sleeve to effect a radial expansion of the heated portion thereof. The core and sleeve then pass through a cooling station, thereby cooling the expanded sleeve to stabilize it. A stress graded compound also for use in splicing electrical cables and the like is made by heating a dimethyl silicone liquid to remove entrapped gas and mixing the liquid with a silicone carbide powder having a particle size capable of passing through a 400 mesh screen.

    Abstract: This relates to a label applicator for applying labels to mold cavities of rotating mold units. The label applicator is fixed relative to moving mold units and includes an extensible fluid motor which carries a pick-up head or suction head for moving the suction head in a straight line direction and return. The extensible fluid motor is carried by a shaft for oscillation between a label pick-up position and a label deposit position. The extensible fluid motor is carried by a bracket which, in turn, is carried by a shaft of a rotary actuator which is constructed to oscillate between two fixed positions which are spaced apart a preselected angular distance. There is incorporated with the rotary actuator a decelerator for rapidly, yet smoothly, decelerating rotation of the bracket carrying the extensible fluid motor. Suitable sensor means are provided for timing the actuation of the label applicator in accordance with the position of a mold cavity into which a label is to be placed.

    Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for fabricating insulated cables, particularly polymeric insulated electrical power cables, resistant to the formation and growth of electrochemical trees is disclosed. Internal pressure on the conductor side of the cable is maintained lower than the external pressure on the outer surface of the insulation during extrusion. Extrusion pressure higher than the external pressure results in expansion of the insulation following extrusion. This expansion or swelling reduces the number and size of cracks and voids which are precursors of electrochemical trees. In addition, pressure curing the extruded, insulated cable with a curing medium above its melting point followed by gradual gradient cooling under internal pressure and higher external cooling fluid pressure to around room temperature optimizes the resistance of the cable to nucleation and growth of electrochemical trees.

A major advantage of this apparatus is that production speeds can be increased while maintaining bubble stability.

    Abstract: To produce a laminated container consisting mainly of thermoplastic materials, an outer container element consisting of material having desired barrier properties is first vacuum moulded from thin foil or film material in a vacuum mould, and thereafter an inner container element is blow moulded in the same mould with the outer container element present therein. To carry out this method, a mould is provided which consists mainly of two vacuum mould halves which are closable upon an intermediary plate in the vacuum moulding step and directly closable upon one another in the blow moulding step.

    Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for making a hollow, rib-reinforced article from a composite preform of two thermoplastic sheets. One sheet has a pattern of ridges or grooves, on a surface which contacts the other sheet, to permit the free flow of fluid from a marginal edge to interior regions of the preform. The thermoformed portions can be kept apart by pressure between the sheets, which can serve to hotform the sheets against respective mould surfaces, or air pressure can bond the sheets together. Half of the outer peripheral edge portion of each of two reinforcing hoops is positioned in a semi-cylindrical mold half to place the hoops in spaced, parallel, co-axial alignment. Thereafter, a tube of soft thermoplastic is extruded through the open central portions of the hoops until the end of the tube overlies a co-axially positioned pneumatic nozzle.
