  • Patent number: 6004623
Abstract: A coating device for coating a size-press roll, paper or board or an equivalent moving base including a revolving coating bar which rests against a moving base. The coating bar extends across the machine width and is supported on a cradle substantially over its entire length. The coating bar spreads and smooths a coating agent introduced into the coating device and applied onto the moving base before the moving base contacts the coating bar. The coating bar in accordance with the invention is a smooth bar of large diameter, fitted against the moving base so that the profile of coating quantity of the coating agent can be controlled.

  • Patent number: 5989639
Abstract: Air bubbles which are entrapped within the cells of an engraved applicator roller are displaced from the cells by wiping the surface of the engraved applicator roller with the bristles of a brush. An elongated brush mounted on a doctor blade head projects into a doctor blade reservoir. The bristles of the brush are disposed for wiping engagement against the engraved surface of an applicator roller which is wetted by liquid coating material. As the engraved applicator roller rotates in contact with the liquid material in the doctor blade reservoir, the bristles of the brush puncture the entrapped air bubbles and sweep the entrapped air away from the cells. The sweeping action of the bristles induces a relatively low pressure condition within the cells, which promotes the flow of liquid material into the cells.

  • Patent number: 5935654
Abstract: A coating method and coating apparatus capable of providing a coated film of improved surface properties free from any streak and color shading and facilitating coating on a sheet of an increased width without causing enlargement of the apparatus and thus complicating its structure. A swirling motion imparting mechanism and an orifice are arranged at a connection between a liquid feed pipe and a coater. Swirling motion is imparted to coating liquid discharged from a pump and then a flow velocity of the coating liquid is immediately increased to a level as high as 200 cm/s or more, the liquid then being fed into a pocket of the coater within 0.1 second or less. This permits shearing to act on the coating liquid, to thereby effectively prevent a variation in viscosity of the coating liquid and flocculation thereof, so that the coated film may be improved in surface properties.

An impression cylinder covered with a protection foil co-operates with the rubber blanket cylinder. The use of a relatively hard supporting foil instead of a rubber blanket allows for much cleaner and quicker perforation and punching, and the affixing of the perforating, die-cutting, cutting or creasing component to the supporting foil on the rubber blanket cylinder allows a much easier and more precise positioning of that component. As a result, the device can also be used in endless printing machines. Moreover, the use of an independent inner underlying blanket allows an exact calibration of the total thickness of the supporting foil comprising the working tools.

  • Patent number: 5792260
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for two-sided coating of a printing-paper web with a coating paste or equivalent. In the method, the paper web is passed through the coating part of the paper machine, in which the first side of the web is coated in the first coating station of said coating part, and the coating-agent layer produced on the face of the web is dried at least partly by means of a first drying unit. The second side of the web is coated in the second coating station of the coating part, and the second coating-agent layer produced on the face of the web is dried at least partly by means of a second drying unit.

  • Patent number: 5789023
Abstract: A fountain applicator for applying coating liquid onto a web of paper carried past the applicator, has a coating liquid flow path that includes a curved surface along which a sheet of the coating liquid is flowed to subject the sheet to centrifugal force to cause air entrained in the coating liquid to move away from one side of the sheet that is toward the curved surface, so that the one side is relatively free of entrained air. After being flowed along the curved surface, the sheet of coating liquid is directed toward the web in a free standing jet curtain of coating liquid, to contact the web surface primarily with the one relatively air-free side of the coating liquid sheet to decrease the occurrence of skip coating on the web surface, especially when the web is traveling past the applicator at high speeds. The coating is applied in excess onto the web surface and is metered and leveled to a desired coat weight by a downstream doctor.

  • Patent number: 5776545
Abstract: A method and an equipment in which a comparatively thick film such as the barrier rib of a plasma display panel is formed by one time of coating process. According to the nozzle coating equipment (10), a coating line (21A) is formed in such a way that, while a coating solution is being discharged from the tip of a nozzle (20) which is provided at the lower end of a liquid vessel (18) filled with the coating solution, the liquid vessel (18) carrying the nozzle (20) is driven in an X-direction relatively to a glass plate (16). Subsequently, the liquid vessel (18) is shifted in a Y-direction to the amount of a pitch P which is smaller than the width of each coating line, whereupon the next coating line (21B) is formed. Thus, a coated surface (22) is formed on the glass plate (16) in such a manner that the adjacent coating lines overlap each other in the widthwise direction thereof in succession.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a coat mix to a high-speed running board or paper web by accurately premetering and pre-smoothing the applied coal with an applicator apparatus and then minimally doctoring the applied coat with an air knife. The applicator apparatus has a narrow slot-orifice extending in a cross-machine direction for facilitating high-speed laminar flow of coating mix into a gap region defined by confronting surfaces of the applicator apparatus and the web. The applicator apparatus has a member for directing the ejected coating mix in tho gap region in a direction reverse to a travel direction of the web so that only a predetermined portion of the ejected coating mix is allowed to form an applied coat on the web. This accurate premetering of the coating mix by the applicator apparatus permits an operator to readily optimize the subsequent process of doctoring the applied coating with an air knife.
