Abstract: A method of slot extrusion coating is provided that can be used to apply thin coatings using liquid compositions having high percent solids. A window of operability advantageously identifies the limits of a process to provide these thin high solids coatings. The window of operability is determined by obtaining a first graphical curve representing actual values of wet thickness as a function of percent solids level. The critical wet thickness is then identified on the first graphical curve. The window of operability is identified as an area defined by the boundaries: percent solids greater than the point at which critical wet thickness occurs, an actual wet thickness greater than all points above the first graphical curve and equal to or less than the critical thickness.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the production of patterned polyurethane foam as a backing for tufted goods. This process comprises applying a puddle of a reactive polyurethane mixture to the back side of a greige good, passing the greige good coated with the reactive polyurethane mixture under a doctoring device and curing the polyurethane backed greige good. In one embodiment of the present invention, the doctoring device is patterned or an attachment to the doctoring device is patterned, and forms a corresponding pattern in the polyurethane coating as it passes under the doctoring device. In another embodiment, a woven secondary backing is laminated to the reactive polyurethane mixture after passing under the doctoring device, and pressure is applied against the face of the tufted good such that the urethane is pushed through the windows of the secondary backing. This pressure forms beads of polyurethane on the underside of the woven secondary backing.

Abstract: Edge faces with level differences are formed by assembling blocks constructing a coating head, and level difference variances in the width direction of a web are measured by a level difference variance measurement device. Then, the level difference variances are adjusted with reference to measured results, so that the level difference variances can be reduced. Therefore, coating layers can be uniformly formed on the web.

Abstract: A very thin inner layer composed of a polymer chosen for its barrier and/or inertness properties is fabricated within a container preform constructed mainly from another polymer, or a structure of polymers. The inner layer on the preform is produced either by a controlled coating method involving coating of the injection mold core rod prior to injection molding or by a coating applied directly to the preform after injection molding. This enables both inner and main layers to be brought together at a time when the interface between them is molten. A tie layer can be employed, when desirable, to enable the layers to be combined without melting the layer interface.
