    Abstract: The process described herein presents a unique method and means of manufacturing medium density fibreboard (MDF) using agricultural plant stalks. The plant stalks are first depithed. The stalks are then broken down into fiber-like threads and made into fiber bundles. These fiber bundles are then combined with a resin component and a wax component, and the resulting mixture is cured. The MDF is economical to manufacture than prior art fibreboard in that it does not necessitate the use of expensive MDI resin. Further, the fibreboard is environmentally friendly in that it provides a beneficial use for agricultural waste.

Such water resistant materials are characterized by enhanced moisture barrier properties. The wax comprises a triglyceride whose fatty acids are predominantly stearic acid (C18). The composition is used as an additive in the manufacture of wax coated boxes and adhesive compounds used in boxboard packaging and manufacturing operations.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a fluid preservative to wood or wood products has a work tank for maintaining a predetermined concentration of preservative in the fluid. The work tank is equipped with a heater to keep the temperature of the fluid and the preservative in the work tank at a predetermined level. Hot fluid and preservative is drawn under a vacuum, initially from the work tank. On filling a pressure vessel, a pressure pump then supplies the preservative and fluid mixture under pressure to the pressure vessel in which the wood or wood product is being treated. As the treatment process depletes the preservative in the fluid, through absorption in the wood, the depleted fluid is circulated back to the work tank where it is heated and more preservative is added to restore the concentration of preservative in the fluid to a desired level. The fluid, replenished with preservative, is then pumped into the pressure vessel.

In the said method, carbon dioxide copolymer is dissolved in a low toxic or non-toxic solvent to form a solution of 3-6 wt % concentration. The residual solvent is removed by drying process and a degradable, water and oil resistant and transparent protective membrane is obtained. The thickness of the protective membrane is in the range of 10-20 micrometer. Metal ion content is lower than 1 ppm. No leakage and deformation of the tableware are observed after the tableware is immerged in water or edible oil for 4 hours at 80° C. The decoloration test by cold edible oil and ethanol is negative. Fungus test gives grade V.

    Abstract: In a method and apparatus for sizing a yarn sheet, the yarn sheet is passed over rollers through a wetting unit and a following roller nip that reduces the moisture content to a selected level. The wetted yarn sheet then passes through a sizing unit and over rollers forming a nip to reduce the sizing content to a desired level. The rollers of the wetting unit and the rollers of the sizing unit are in close proximity to minimize the reach of the yarn sheet there between and thereby minimize the heat loss in the yarn sheet. The reach is covered by a cover having a heater that extends over the yarn sheet reach to maintain the yarn sheet at a desired temperature as it enters the sizing unit. The temperature of the wetting agent bath in the wetting unit is 65°-95° C., with the temperature of the wetting agent being approximately 5°-10° C. higher than the temperature of the sizing agent bath.

In all embodiments, the fluoroacrylate emulsion contains, dispersed therein with the aid of a surfactant system, essentially a single hydrophobic component comprising a particulate fluoroacrylate copolymer having repeating units of the formulas I and II ##STR1## wherein R.sub.f is a C.sub.8 -rich fluorinated alkyl radical; R and R.sup.1 are hydrogen or alkyl; and R.sup.2 is hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl.

    Abstract: A wrinkle-free/wrinkle-resistant cellulosic fiber-containing fabric which retains tensile-, tear- and abrasion-strength due to the reduction of hydrogen bonding in the fabric is obtained by a process which comprises pretreating the fabric with the processes to reduce and control hydrogen bonding in the fabric, and treating a cellulosic fiber-containing fabric with aqueous formaldehyde and a catalyst in liquid form capable of catalyzing the cross-linking reaction between the formaldehyde and cellulose. Such cross-linking is carried out by heat-curing the cellulosic fiber-containing fabric under saturated steam with or without high pressure and/or infrared or far-infrared radiation and/or high frequency (induction) radio waves. Under such conditions the formaldehyde reacts with cellulose in the presence of catalyst with no substantial loss of formaldehyde prior to said reaction so as to improve the wrinkle-free or wrinkle-resistant property of the fabric without substantial strength loss.

    Abstract: The present invention concerns a process and a coating color for coating a cellulosic web. According to the process an aqueous coating color is applied on the surface of the web. The invention comprises using a coating color which contains an aqueous polymer whose viscosity in an aqueous solution increases when the temperature rises. Preferably, methylcellulose or a corresponding polymer having a gelling temperature of about 5 to 10 .degree. C. more than the application tempature of the coating color is used. The temperature of the coating is increased after the application of the coating color in order to achieve gelling of the polymer. As a result, the coating color rapidly solidifies which decreases the amount of mixture being recycled and it reduces mist-formation in the film press method and improves coverage of coating applied by conventional blade coating.

The two functionalities copolymerized into these backbones include the acetoacetoxy moiety and a carboxylic acid group. The crosslinking is effected by adding a compound capable of reacting and crosslinking the acetoacetoxy moiety and another compound capable of reacting and crosslinking the carboxylic acid functionality. The former can be a dialdehyde such as glyoxal or glutaraldehyde.
