  • Patent number: 7608302
Abstract: A method is described for improving resistance to chemical attack by aluminum or magnesium in refractory components. In one method, a slurry is formed comprising calcium silicate-containing refractory material and a barium-containing compound. This slurry is placed in a mold, then dewatered to form a component which is hydrothermally processed to form a final component. In a second procedure, a silica-containing porous refractory component is impregnated with an aqueous solution of an oxide or hydroxide of barium or strontium and thereafter dried in air.

  • Patent number: 7588797
Abstract: A chemical composition and method for repairing a thermal barrier coating on a component designed for use in a hostile thermal environment, such as turbine, combustor and augmentor components of a gas turbine engine. The method repairs a thermal barrier coating on a component that has suffered localized damage to the thermal barrier coating. After cleaning the surface area of the component exposed by the localized spallation, a paste-like mixture of a ceramic composition comprising ceramic powders and nano-sized ceramic materials in a binder is applied to the surface area of the component, and is optionally smoothed using mechanical means. The composition is then allowed to dry and cure to form a dried coating having polymeric characteristics. Upon subsequent heating, the dried coating reacts to produce a glassy ceramic repair coating.

The crucible is used in the handling of molten materials that are solidified in the crucible and then removed as ingots. The crucible does not require the preparation of a very thick coating at the end user facilities, is faster and cheaper to produce, presents an improved release effect and allows the production of silicon ingot without cracks. The crucible includes a base body, a substrate layer containing silicon nitride, an intermediate layer containing silica, and a surface layer containing silicon nitride, silicon dioxide and silicon.

Abstract: A transparent, colorless glass or glass-ceramic panel has a visually dense, high-temperature-stable coating having an organic/inorganic network structure containing filling material particles and a color-imparting pigment. The mechanically stable, visually dense coating has no melt-reaction zone at the surface of the panel, which is coated with the coating, so that it does not impair the panel strength. The inorganic network structure can be made from a SiO2-based sol. The coating is made by introducing the color-imparting pigment and the filling material particles into a reactive organic/inorganic network structure; applying the resulting organic/inorganic network structure containing the pigment and the filling material particles to the panel to coat the panel and then burning-in the organic/inorganic network structure with the pigment and the filling material particles under thermal conditions to form the coating with no melt-reaction zone.

Abstract: Exemplary embodiments of the invention provide barrier coated substrates and methods of coating a substrate with a barrier coating derived from sol gels. An example includes a barrier coated aerospace component that is subject to hot salt corrosion during use. The barrier coating is derived from oxidation of a coating composition that includes at least one sol gel. The barrier coating resists hot salt corrosion for an incubation period of such duration that an uncoated superalloy substrate under the same conditions would suffer corrosion to a depth of about 2.0 mils. Methods of applying the barrier coating include the steps of selecting a first liquid sol gel and wetting surfaces of the superalloy substrate with the selected first liquid sol gel. The wetted surfaces of the superalloy substrate are subjected to heat treatment. The heat treatment includes sintering of sol gel to oxide to produce a barrier coating.

Abstract: A method for preparing a ZnO nanocrystal directly on a silicon substrate includes the steps of: (S1) forming a Zn—Si—O composite thin film on the silicon substrate; and (S2) thermally treating the obtained thin film. Particularly, ZnO nanocrystals are formed in an amorphous Zn—Si—O composite thin film by controlling the composition of the Zn—Si—O composite thin film and heating temperature thereof. With the present invention method for preparing a ZnO nanocrystal directly on a silicon substrate, more possibilities are opened up for the applications of ZnO nanocrystals to an optoelectronic device in use of a silicon substrate.
