Abstract: Tablets and other objects are film coated by including in the tablet a film-forming polymer that is activated upon contact with an activating amount of liquid. The film-forming polymer, e.g., a cellulosic ether, is homogeneously mixed with the other ingredients of the tablet, shaped into any desirable form, loaded into a conventional coating apparatus, and sprayed or foamed with an activating amount of fluid, e.g., water, alcohol, etc., and dried. This coating process eliminates potential problems such as spray nozzle clogging, inappropriate coating fluid viscosity, and the inability to properly atomize the coating fluid. This coating process does not impart any appreciable weight or thickness gain to the tablet.

  • Patent number: 7578953
Abstract: An article is sulfonated by forming a sulfonating gas composition containing a gaseous sulfur-containing compound provided from a gas source. The gas source may utilize a chemical feed stock that includes a precursor sulfur-containing compound. The article is then contacted with the sulfur-containing gas until a surface treatment is effected. Next, the article is then optionally contacted with a gaseous neutralization composition, and then a liquid neutralization composition. In another sulfonation method, a first test sample is sulfonated and then analyzed by inductively coupled plasma analysis and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. A calibration relationship between the two spectroscopic techniques is determined with the inductively coupled plasma atomic spectroscopic value taken as the accurate value. In subsequent sulfonation runs, test samples are included and monitored by X-ray fluorescence.

Abstract: A dye is fixed to a solid material by using a diene or dienophile as the dye, incorporating a dienophile or diene into the solid material, effecting Diels-Alder reaction between the diene and the dienophile or between the dye and the solid material for binding the dye to the solid material. The dyed solid material has an increased dye concentration and prevents dye diffusion with the lapse of time.

  • Patent number: 5387383
Abstract: Rayon/nylon and other sheath/core composite fibers or other materials, with good adhesion between sheath and core resulting from an adhesion promoter. The adhesion promoter is difunctional and sterically hindered. Fumaric acid and terephthalic acid are preferred adhesion promoters for the composite fibers or other materials, because each compound has both difunctionality and steric hinderance, allowing either to form covalent bonds to both the sheath and the core. Fibers produced in accordance with this invention may be used to produce fabrics which have the strength and wrinkle resistance shown by a number of synthetic fibers, but with the water absorption characteristics of natural fibers such as cotton.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a multimode optical transmission medium from a synthetic resin having the distribution of refractive index varying continuously in a fixed direction. In the method, a monomer is polymerized while a transparent polymer for constituting the wall of a vessel is being dissolved into the monomer. Therefore, this method is free from the defect of methods using conventional polymerization reactions, and has an extremely high productivity.

Abstract: A silicone gel encapsulated integrated circuit (12) is placed in a container, the container being partially filled with a silicone elastomer (16) which is much more rugged than the gel. After the elastomer (16) hardens, it completely covers the gel encapsulation (14) and protects it and the integrated circuit device from the effects of rough handling. The gel, however, gives all of the protection from the external environment that it would in the absence of the elastomer encapsulation.

  • Patent number: 5270080
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of manufacturing an organic coating film for forming a transparent super-thin film on the surface of glass, plastics, metals, etc.Using a surface active material containing a halosilane or alkoxysilane group, an organic coating film is formed on the substrate with the surface active material chemically bonded to the substrate surface in a dry reaction atmosphere. A transparent organic coating film is thus formed with a uniform thickness at the namometer level.A dehydrochlorination reaction is brought about on the surface of glass, plastics, metals, etc. using, for example, a chlorosilane- or chlorotitanium-based surface active material in a dry nitrogen or like atmosphere (with a relative humidity of, for example, 35% or below), followed by removal of excess surface active material, thus forming an organic coating film consisting of a monomolecular layer. This monomolecular layer is chemically bonded directly to the substrate and has high peel-off strength.

  • Patent number: 5256355
Abstract: A room temperature curing polyurethane composition is bonded to the surface f cables having jackets of an olefin/ester interpolymer to provide a water resistant seal thereabout by first exposing the surface of a length of cable to an alkali metal hydroxide solution to hydrolyze the functional ester groups and thereby substitute hydroxyl groups for the organic acid of the ester in the interpolymer at the surface of the jacket. A diisocyanate primer is applied to the treated surface and it interacts with the hydroxyl groups to produce pendant reactive groups. A room temperature curing urethane prepolymer composition is then molded about the primed surface at ambient temperatures and the unreacted hydroxyl groups along the urethane prepolymer chain react with the pendant reactive groups of the jacket to produce a firmly bonded overmolding on the jacket.
