Patent number: 4650700Abstract: Surface treatment of metal blanks is achieved by applying an oxirane ring-containing compound in the gas phase to the surface of a metal blank maintained at a high temperature. According to this method, a covering layer which is much thinner than a conventional so-called adhesive primer coating layer and has a thickness of the angstrom order is formed on the surface of a metal blank. If a thermoplastic resin layer is coated on the metal surface treated with this oxirane ring-containing compound, the initial adhesion and the adhesion after lapse of time are highly improved over these adhesions attainable by the conventional methods. Even if a lacquer containing a thermosetting resin instead of the thermoplastic resin is coated and dried on the metal surface treated with this bonding compound, a similar effect can be attained.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1985Date of Patent: March 17, 1987Assignee: Toyo Seikan Kaisha, Ltd.Inventors: Yoichi Kitamura, Hisashi Hotta

Patent number: 4447478Abstract: The invention herein disclosed provides a method for preparing improved fluoroelastomer film compositions including the steps of dissolving a fluoroelastomer gum selected from the group consisting of copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene, and terpolymers of vinylidene fluoride, hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene in a solvent, adding an amine-derived curative to the gum solution and curing the fluoroelastomer gum with the curative in the absence of metallic oxides. A method is also provided for adhering fluoroelastomer film compositions, devoid of metallic oxides, to substrates which includes the steps of dissolving the fluoroelastomer gum in a solvent, adding an amine-derived curative to the gum solution, coating the substrate with the fluoroelastomer gum-curative solution and evaporating the solvent leaving a film firmly adhered to the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1982Date of Patent: May 8, 1984Assignee: David Hudson, Inc.Inventor: Donald Close

Patent number: 4433014Abstract: A pigmented, thermosetting organic solvent solution coating composition having improved capacity to resist acid rain is disclosed in which a resinous polyepoxide, a phenoplast resin cross-linking agent for said polyepoxide (preferably a xylolol-formaldehyde condensate), a phosphoric acid ester catalyst, a chromium-containing pigment providing resistance to corrosion, and a clay having the capacity to fix phosphate, are combined. For package stability, the catalyst is the reaction product of ortho phosphoric acid with an aliphatic diol, there being sufficient hydroxy in said diol to provide at least 1 equivalent of hydroxy for each acid equivalent in said phosphoric acid. These coatings are applied as a prime coating which is baked to remove solvents and provide a dry film without removing the phosphoric acid contained therein. The dry primer is then overcoated with a topcoat, and the doubly coated substrate is baked to cure the first coating.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1982Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: DeSoto, Inc.Inventors: Joseph E. Patent number: 4428982Abstract: The method of mass producing threaded fasteners having in thread grooves thereof deposits of locking material having a dry non-tacky surface outer surface which permits bulk storage of the fasteners which comprises continuously advancing a series of fasteners through a succession of operating stations to a collection station where the fasteners may be randomly arranged, while eliminating any provision for heating or drying operation, depositing a fluid material in thread grooves of the advancing fasteners, providing a water solution of a film-forming material covering the deposits as the fasteners continue to advance, and providing a light application of a fast acting desiccant in powder form over the film-forming material to convert the film-forming material substantially without significant delay to a non-tacky protective film over the deposits.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1982Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: The Oakland CorporationInventor: Richard B. Patent number: 4404247Abstract: Magnetic recording medium protected by an ultra-thin, composite low surface energy covering provided by an inner layer of insoluble polymer and an outer layer of insoluble polymer which are made by in situ polymerization. The inner layer is made from two monomers such as a hydantoin hexacrylate and alpha-methyl styrene. The outer layer is made from polymerizable perfluoropolyether monomer having ethylenicaly unsaturated polymerizable groups. The composite low surface energy covering is especially useful for providing lubricity and corrosion resistance to a metallic thin-film magnetic recording coating.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1982Date of Patent: September 13, 1983Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Mario Dominguez-Burguette, George D. Patent number: 4391848Abstract: A novel method for manufacturing magnet wire in a continuous process by which coatings of a flowable resin material may be applied concentrically to a moving elongated filament in thicknesses of about 16 mils or less. The filament can be a bare copper or aluminum conductor having round or rectangular configuration or an insulated conductor upon which a top or an intermediate coat of material is desirably applied. Coatings of one-half and one mil also can be applied by the method of the invention. By the method of the invention, magnet wire can be manufactured by continuously drawing the wire to size, annealing the wire, if necessary, insulating the wire with one or more coats of flowable resin material, curing the resin material, and spooling the wire for shipment, without interruption at speeds limited only by the filament pay-off and take-up devices used. The invention utilizes the flowable resin material to center the filament in a die, the size of the die controls the thickness of the coat to be applied.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1981Date of Patent: July 5, 1983Assignee: Phelps Dodge Industries, Inc.Inventor: George D.
