  • Patent number: 4546036
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium has a biaxially-oriented polyester film base which includes carbon black beads having a median diameter from 50 to 500 nm and is substantially free from beads or agglomerates more than 5 micrometers in diameter. The beads provide opacity such as is often required of the flexible recording disk of a diskette. The film base may be either a single layer, throughout which the beads are uniformly dispersed, or it may be multi-layer, e.g., a central layer containing the carbon black beads and two surface layers which are free from the beads.

  • Patent number: 4532170
Abstract: The scuff resistance of a high-pressure laminate is improved by incorporating in or very near the surface thereof, finely divided polyethylene wax preferably having a particle size of about 1-25 microns and a melting point of 220.degree.-230.degree. F. The wax is incorporated as part of a coating mixture applied to the face of an unimpregnated decor paper sheet in an ultra-thin layer, which layer is dried at a temperature below the wax melting point and then impregnated with conventional melamine-formaldehyde resin. The impregnated sheet is placed onto a sheet of convention phenolic resin impregnated core sheets and consolidated in the conventional way under heat and pressure. During consolidation, the wax particles "bloom", or migrate to the surface. The finished laminate surface has greatly improved scuff resistance.

  • Patent number: 4529625
Abstract: A light-weight, roofing membrane, for application upon building roofs, formed of a fibrous sheet having one of its surfaces coated with a thin, continuous layer of asphalt bonded only to the outermost portion of the surface of the sheet, with the voids and crevices between the fibers, within the body of the sheet, being substantially free of asphalt. The membrane is made by chilling one surface of a fibrous sheet while flowing heated asphalt upon the opposite surface of the sheet and rapidly cooling the deposited asphalt so that it solidifies and bonds to the surface portion only of the sheet fibers before it flows into the body of the sheet. A layer of fine particles of silica-like sand is applied to the exposed surface of the asphalt and bonded thereto by the asphalt.

  • Patent number: 4489117
Abstract: A super high density magnetic recording medium is provided, which comprises a polyester film and a discontinuous film formed on at least one surface of the polyester film. The discontinuous film has a thickness of smaller than 500 angstroms and is composed mainly of a water-soluble polymer, a silane coupling agent, and if desired, a silicone resin. A high density magnetic recording medium is also provided, which comprises a ferromagnetic metal thin film formed on the discontinuous film layer of the polyester base film. The polyester base film is especially suitable for formation of a metallized video tape, and this tape is excellent in the slip characteristics and abrasion resistance and advantageous in that noises and drop-out are reduced.

Abstract: A non-slip place mat is disclosed which comprises a web such as a paper sheet, and a composition coating comprising a blend of water, a water-soluble salt, a wax and a polymeric material, which both coats and impregnates the web, e.g. the paper sheet, whereby said sheet is rendered substantially hydrophobic and it and items placed on it are rendered substantially slip-resistant when resting on a tray or table which may be subject to sudden movement. The non-slip place mat is particularly useful for airline serving trays. The present place mat is characterized by the provision of a generally rectangular planar flexible web, which is indented along two opposed edges. The web is multi-layered, i.e. coated, and the four corners of the web are rounded off, so that each corner is defined by a curved periphery. • Patent number: 4448835
Abstract: Window weather stripping for sealing a gap between a movable glass and a window frame having less frictional sliding resistance and longer life time at relatively lower manufacturing cost. The window weather stripping according to the present invention comprises at least one microscopically rough surface on which the window glass slides, the rough surface being formed by applying a colloidal paint thereon. The colloidal paint is prepared by mixing a synthetic resin paint with a solvent the solubility of which is smaller than that of the synthetic resin or by mixing the colloidal paint obtained as described above with a non-colloidal paint. The synthetic resin is vinyl chloride, urethane-based resin, acryl-based resin, nylon-based resin, polyolefine chlorination-based resin, etc., and the poor solvent is isopropyl alcohol or methanol.

  • Patent number: 4445956
Abstract: An improved method and material for securing a thin-edged deformable structure, such as a honeycomb core, so that the structure may be machined while it is in a generally stabilized condition. The material is a laminate which is bonded to one side of the structure to be machined. The laminate is then secured by vacuum and the structure is then machined in a desired manner. The laminate includes a first stabilizing layer formed from a mesh of fiberglass, nylon or the like and having relative large openings. The mesh is impregnated with a suitable epoxy or phenolic resin which acts as an adhesive to secure the mesh to the structure. A fabric of nylon or the like is applied over the mesh and bonded thereto. A third and final layer includes a non-porous plastic sheet which permits the laminate to adhere by suction to a vacuum chuck. After machining, the fabric and non-porous layers are removed, leaving the open mesh layer fixed to the structure to stabilize it.
