  • Patent number: 6355331
Abstract: A surface structure including a skin (13) a build-up (18) and a backing (20). A skin is formed and a build-up layer is applied to the skin. In one embodiment, gas pressure is applied to form the skin in a single-sided die. A nozzle on a five-axis arm then applies resin to the skin in a selected pattern. The selected pattern may form a hexagonal “honeycomb” cell structure, for example, to support the skin and may transition to a columnar cell structure for better crush resistance. The hexagonal-to-columnar structure provides superior crush resistance in automotive body panels, for example, and improved solar energy concentration in solar energy applications.

  • Patent number: 6265044
Abstract: A vacuum covering method for covering a profiled surface of a base member with a sheet by effecting bonding between the sheet and the base member under vacuum, wherein the base member has a multiplicity of spaced vacuum grooves extending across the profiled surface. When air is evacuated from the vacuum grooves, the sheet is drawn by vacuum or suction down onto the profiled surface. The base member is injection-molded of synthetic resin and undergoes thermal shrinkage when it becomes cool after molding. With the vacuum grooves provided in the profiled surface, thermal shrinkage is distributed uniformly over the entire area of the profiled surface and does not generate shrink mark which may form a depression on a front surface of the sheet bonded to the base member.

  • Patent number: 6265045
Abstract: The method and apparatus of the present invention prevents the formation of pin-holes during stretching of strip laminates in the cross machine direction. Pin-holes are prevented by creating slack areas along the length of the web where the edges of the non-woven strips meet with the polymer film, pressing the slack areas into the interdigital stretching rollers without stretching the slack areas, and stretching the remainder of the web in a typical manner. The slack regions are formed prior to interdigitation by, for example, formation of a furrow, a fold or a corrugation.

  • Patent number: 6221460
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a liquid absorbent material that is particularly useful as a liner material for personal care absorbent articles such as diapers, training pants, incontinence garments, sanitary napkins, bandages and the like. The material contains a plurality of peaks across its surface at spaced-apart intervals separated by channels. Disposed within the peaks is a liquid absorbing material capable of absorbing body exudates and liquids in general. Due to the materials and the nature of the construction of the present invention, when used as a liner material for personal care absorbent articles such as diapers, it tends to reduce the total surface area in contact with the infant's skin and it also provides a plurality of air channels within the diaper from the front waistband to the back waistband of the diaper thereby providing a path for increased air circulation.

Preferably, the minitexture is formed by fractal patterning at least a portion of the work surface.

  • Patent number: 5536558
Abstract: A display is constructed from translucent fluorescent plastic sheet material providing an ambient light capturing and intensifying light conduit. Area dimensions are selected appropriate to a sign or other display and a thickness is selected for structural support of the display and for capturing, intensifying and conducting ambient light along the thickness of the light conduit to intensify captured light as in a wave guide. A substantially opaque reflective layer is formed on one side of the light conduit. A decorative layer is formed over the reflective layer and is selected to provide a desired sign decor. Grooves are formed in the light conduit through the reflective decorative coating in the pattern of the selected display. The grooves are formed to a depth to intercept light captured in the light conduit. The grooves provide angled surfaces which refract, capture and illuminate light out of the light conduit.

Abstract: A molding obtained by laminating resinous plates of 0.05 to 1 mm thick, prepared by impregnating 20% by volume or more of a reinforcing fiber with a thermoplastic resin, and molding the resultant laminate, wherein sections where deviation or deformation is caused by an external force, or preferably nonjoining parts having an area of 5 to 60% based on the area of the location where impact is absorbed, are provided between the laminated layers constituting the molding, or the laminated layer surface where the impact is absorbed is formed with a shape having a curvature of 5 to 20 mm in radius. The molding absorbs impact force significantly and prevents efficiently human body, etc. from the shock upon striking.

Abstract: A retroreflective article comprising a transparent base sheet having first and second broad faces, the second face being substantially planar and the first face having an array of substantially hemi-spheroidal microlenses thereon, the microlenses being wider and shorter than portions of true spheres, the shape of the microlenses and thickness of the base sheet being such that collimated light substantially orthogonally incident to the array is focused approximately at the second face, wherein the second face has a coating of a nacreous pigment composition thereon. The article can include an optional layer of adhesive over the reflective layer to permit the article to be adhered to a document as a tamper-indicating, authenticating, and protective overlay. Special images can be formed within the article to enhance the security provided thereby. Also, a method for making such base sheets, and a method for making a forming master.

  • Patent number: 4973507
Abstract: A thin wood dimensionally stable flat laminate panel made out of one or more wood veneer sheets attached to one or more sheets of core ply material such as chipboard by adhesive. The thickness of the panel is in the range of from about 0.080 inches to about 0.180 inches. Apertures passing through the panel are positioned around or arranged along the edges of the panel in order to decrease warpage of the panel due to moisture passing to and from the wood veneer sheets at the edges of the panel as a result of moisture passing to the atmosphere from the sheets and from the atmosphere to said sheets. The apertures are preferably spaced the same distance apart. The apertures may be formed by using a commercial sewing machine to position the stitching along the edges of the panel. The stitching provides a capillary "wicking" action facilitating venting of the moisture from the wood veneer sheets to the atmosphere. Stitching may also be used to attach a bias cover material around the edges of the panel.
