  • Patent number: 7153892
Abstract: Disclosed are environmentally friendly coating compositions for coating thermoplastic olefin objects and which are curable using ultraviolet and visible radiation. Even if the coating compositions are applied to an unprimed surface, the resulting cured compositions have excellent adhesion. The cured coatings have improved adhesion properties and clear coat embodiments have improved clarity properties. In addition, methods are disclosed for coating surfaces, or at least a portion of the surfaces, and curing of the coated surface to obtain partially or fully cured coated surfaces are also disclosed. Furthermore, articles of manufacture incorporating fully cured coated surfaces are disclosed, including, for example motor-vehicle bumpers. Also disclosed are methods, processes, production lines, articles of manufacture, and factories which incorporate these environmentally friendly coating compositions.

  • Patent number: 6187129
Abstract: A cutable topcoat composition and apparatus useful for preparing stable data carrying devices, such as multi-layered laminates, and methods for preparing and using the composition. The composition includes a polymerizable composition and a polymeric binder. The polymerizable composition includes hard and flexible polymerizable subunits in a ratio that optimizes flexibility while retaining good adhesion and plasticizer resistance. In a preferred embodiment, a polymerization initiator is also included in the composition. Optionally, a chain transfer agent may also be added to the composition. The composition is substantially plasticizer free. The methods of using the composition include incorporating the composition into a topcoat film useful for storing the topcoat composition prior to use in preparing data-carrying devices, such as cards.

  • Patent number: 5302466
Abstract: A continuous strip of sheet metal is progressively sheared with longitudinally spaced and laterally extending slits to form opposing U-shaped tabs having corresponding edge portions and successively connected by corresponding center portions of the strip. In one embodiment, the sheared strip is fed between first and second overlapping sets of power driven pinch rollers which progressively grip the edge and center portions, respectively, and the second set of pinch wheels is longitudinally offset and driven at a higher peripheral speed to produce precisely uniform expansion of the strip by deforming the U-shaped tabs into V-shaped tabs. A hot melt adhesively impregnated flexible filament is progressively attached to the expanded center portions of the strip while the strip is heated to form a continuous center connection. In another embodiment, the strip of opposing U-shaped tabs is expanded into opposing V-shaped tabs by coining or thinning a connecting center portion of the strip.
