In a preferred embodiment the steel comprises about 0.16 to 0.21% carbon, about 1.8 to 2.1% manganese; about 1.2 to 1.4% chromium; about 0.7 to 0.9% silicon; and the balance essentially iron. A clip element may be mounted on the bar to retard or prevent spreading of the flange portions of the section during bending. By securing or fixing the clip element to the section, a substantial improvement in load carrying capability is obtained.

  • Patent number: 4735863
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a novel shell such as used in the manufacture of can ends, and to a method and tools for making such a shell. A non-circular blank having rounded corners is cut from thin metal. The blank is oblong in a direction transverse to the grain of the metal. A first set of tools separates the blanks and forms a substantially flat central panel and an upward-extending chuck wall about the edge of the panel to produce a partially formed shell. The junction area between said panel and said chuck wall has a relatively large radius of curvature at this time. A second set of tools forms in the blank a lip extending outward from the upper end of the chuck wall and generally parallel to said panel; then the panel and the chuck wall are separately gripped, followed by relative movement between the panel and the chuck wall while wrapping the junction area around a forming punch to form a panel wall in said junction area extending upward from the inner part of said chuck wall.

  • Patent number: 4734337
Abstract: A sheet of expanded metal lath has expanded longitudinal edge margins between which the metal sheet is selectively expanded transversely of the sheet length to define plural parallel rows of trapezoidal openings having long sides of about one inch and widths perpendicular to the long sides of about 7/32 inch. Between the selected rows of the openings, the sheet defines corresponding ones of plural rib constructions, each of which has a generally "Z" transverse cross-sectional configuration having substantially parallel non-coplaner and non-overlapping rib edge portions interconnected by a rib central portion disposed oblique to the rib edge portions. Where the unexpended thickness of the sheet is substantially 0.015 inch, the expanded metal sheet has a weight of substantially 1.8 pounds per square yard. The article has about 70% "openness", yet has adequate resistance to bending about lines across its width due to the configuration of the ribs and the sheet edge margins.

Abstract: An antenna reflector comprising a face skin of graphite fiber reinforced epoxy (GFRE) material is coated with a layer of chromium. The chromium is then coated with aluminum and a protective coating of silicon dioxide is then deposited over the aluminum. The chromium has a thickness sufficiently thin to provide good coverage of the pores of the GFRE material and to minimize distortion causing poor bond due to differences in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the different materials in the presence of temperature cycles. The aluminum is sufficiently thick to provide good reflecting characteristics to minimize the polarizing effects of the graphite face skins.

  • Patent number: 4568617
Abstract: A rolling mill for making endless bands, preferably by cold working precipitation hardenable stainless steel, includes a stationary central work roller and a pair of moveable work rollers, each carried by a corresponding carriage. The movable work rollers are backed by intermediate and drive rollers so as to be stiff in response to bending forces. The drive rollers provide rotary motion to all rollers. By elastically distorting a preform and then rolling it in the peripheral direction, the band is cold worked to a desired thickness. The preform may be obtained by parting an annular ring from tubular stock. Subsequent precipitation hardening of the cold worked band produces a stainless steel band having enhanced strength and endurance, and which is free of welds and similar discontinuities while exhibiting stress relieved edges rather than stress concentrated edges.

  • Patent number: 4545170
Abstract: A novel and improved, expanded metal is disclosed along with novel and improved products incorporating such expanded metal. The expanded metal is formed from a piece of sheet metal which is lanced in nested arrays so that when the metal is expanded, diagonal legs are connected to the remaining portion of the sheet metal by folds. After the expanding operation, the legs are substantially coplanar with the adjacent portions of the piece of sheet metal, and the only material deformation of the metal occurs along the folds. The illustrated legs and adjacent projections, which are connected to the legs by folds, are curved so that the centers of the legs have a maximum width. The expanded metal is illustrated incorporated into various types of framing members used to position interior panels of building structures, such as drywall studs, floor tracks for drywall construction, and intersection tracks. Also disclosed are grid tees for suspension ceilings and wall molding members for suspension ceilings.

  • Patent number: 4543297
Abstract: A stiff ring useful for such purposes as electric motor housings. The ring is a single piece, usually having a ratio of diameter to wall thickness less than about 40:1. The ring consists of a single piece of steel cut from a continuous strip having a tongue at one end and a recess at the other. These have interfering tapered locking segments to prevent separation, and are interlinked with one another. The process for making the ring comprises forming the strip in a U-shape around a cylindrical mandrel by interaction with a first half cylindrical die part, and then while holding the bent strip with the mandrel and first die part pressing the free ends so that they symmetrically pass along the inside surface of a second semi-cylindrical die part with the interlocking ends of the strip shaped and riding the die in such a manner that the tongue and recess inter-engage one another with a minimum of physical interference.
