Abstract: A plate-like functional component and method of making same, in particular a gate plate of an automatic gear shift mechanism with locking gate is provided. The gate plate includes engagement holes for engagement elements which kinetically interact with the functional component. To allow high mechanical forces to be transmitted using this component while simplifying its production, and to as far as possible avoid impact noises during interaction with engagement elements which are guided inside the holes, it is provided that the functional component comprises, in sandwich form, three stamped parts, which bear flat against one another, and are unreleasably connected to one another. Each stamped part has at least two engagement holes for engagement elements which kinetically interact with the functional component. The engagement holes in the stamped parts are arranged congruently with respect to one another.

Abstract: A method for preparing a protectively coated, apertured article to be recoated reduces the likelihood that the apertures will become constricted as a consequence of subsequent recoating. The invention, described in the context of a gas turbine engine blade (12) having transpiration cooling passages (34), includes the step of diffusing an auxiliary coating (52) into an existing coating (28) and into the exposed substrate material (26) at the periphery of the passages to form a diffusion zone (54). The blade is then subjected to a stripping agent so that the diffusion zone (54) any undiffused existing coating, and any undiffused auxiliary coating are removed. The method causes a compensatory enlargement of the mouth (44) of each passage so that excess coating that accumulates in the passage mouths during subsequent recoating does not restrict the flow capacity of the passages.

The differential etch rates as between the first and second metal layers permit relatively dimensionally larger distribution channels and relatively dimensionally precise through holes to be formed in the composite substrate. In this regard, the second metal layer permits the formation via photochemical etching of dimensionally deeper and/or wider polymer distribution channels. • Patent number: 5635305
Abstract: An end fitting closes at least one end of a passageway having an external periphery and an internal periphery to be cast-in-place within a part. A fitting body has at least one elongated, blind-ended aperture formed therein. The aperture is defined at least in part by a first surface having a complimentary shape with respect to the external periphery of the cast-in-place passageway for receiving an end of the passageway disposed extending at least partially therein to close the passageway during casting of the part. The fitting body is composed of material essentially identical to material being used during casting of the part. The fitting body is positionable within a casting mold for forming the part to be cast, such that machining the cast part after casting opens the blind-end of the fitting to allow fluid flow through the passageway cast-in-place within the part.

  • Patent number: 5620129
Abstract: A method and preform for forming and attaching an array of conductive balls, preferably solder balls, to ball receiving areas on a substrate is disclosed. The preform is a connected array of sub-preforms comprised of the conductive material from which the balls will be formed. The connections between adjacent sub-preforms are designed to assure division of the preform into individual masses, each sufficient to form one conductive ball. Each sub-preform is provided with a bottom protrusion which assures physical and thermal contact between preform and substrate. The method involves placing the preform on the substrate such that each sub-preform is positioned above the conductive ball receiving areas. The preform and substrate are than heated to above the melting point of the conductive material to melt the conductive material and form metallurgical bonds between the conductive material and the receiving areas.

  • Patent number: 5591511
Abstract: A perforated sheet is diffusion bonded to a thin solid sheet. Each of the perforations of the perforated sheet is tapered, having a maximum diameter at the surface that is not bonded to the thin sheet and a smaller diameter at the surface that is bonded to the thin sheet. The bonded perforated sheet and thin sheet are included with other solid metallic sheets in a forming pack to be superplastically deformed into a structure. The bonded perforated sheet and thin sheet are placed on the top of the forming pack so that the thin sheet will face outwards after the structure is formed. After the superplastic deformation process is completed, the thin sheet is removed by machining to expose the perforated sheet and provide a structure for controlling laminar flow over the perforated sheet. The exposed surface of the perforated sheet includes the smaller diameter of each tapered perforation, while the inner-facing or blind surface of the sheet includes the maximum diameter.

The apparatus holds a pair of rails in spaced parallel relation at a clinching station at which the edges of a vane may be engaged in opposed slotted protuberances in the rails. The spacing of the rails may be increased at the station against a yieldable biasing force, the station including a deforming mechanism for deflecting the vane edges to lock the vanes to the rails. The rails include cam surfaces leading to the vane receiving slots and blocking walls at the trailing ends of the slots to facilitate introducing the vane edges into the slots.

  • Patent number: 5477086
Abstract: Positive mechanical alignment is provided between substrates using micro-bump contacts by forming "detented" conductive bump contacts on one substrate having a concave end which receive and align the generally convex contour of bump contacts on the other substrate. Various configurations of concavities and convexities are described. Flux may be disposed in the concave end of the detented bump contact to promote formation of joints between the concave and convex bump contacts. Both bump contacts may be formed of reflowable material, such as solder, or one or the other of the contacts may be formed of a non-reflowable material which may also function as a standoff between the two substrates. Each substrate is provided with a plurality of bump contacts, and one substrate may be provided with a combination of convex and concave bump contacts corresponding to concave and convex bump contacts on the other substrate. The inventive technique is useful for joining die-to-die, die-to-substrate, or package-to-substrate.

  • Patent number: 5447774
Abstract: There is disclosed a composite slide member which suppresses the exposure of a porous metal layer even when the amount of cutting from a surface of the slide member increases, thereby enhancing an anti-seizing property without adversely affecting a rear resistance. The composite slide member includes a back plate, and a slide layer including a porous metal layer with a porosity of 50% to 80% and a composite synthetic resin composition impregnated and coated in pores of the porous metal layer. The porous metal layer is joined to a surface of the back plate. The porous metal layer is formed by sintering metal powder without applying pressure thereto, and an apparent density of the metal powder is 20% to 40% of its theoretical density. The porous metal and the composite synthetic resin are dispersed on a sliding surface of the slide layer in a substantially mixed condition.
