Abstract: A multi-axis magnetic lens with stable performance in focusing a plurality of charged particle beams is provided. The multi-axis magnetic lens comprises a plurality of magnetic dub-lens modules. On the one hand, the multi-axis magnetic lens employs an annular permanent-magnet unit to provide a basic and stable magnetic flux to the plurality of magnetic sub-lens modules. One the other hand, the multi-axis magnetic lens uses a plurality of subsidiary coils to provide additional and adjustable magnetic flux to the plurality of magnetic sub-lens modules respectively. The invention also proposes a method to turn off or adjust the basic and stable magnetic flux for some applications. Hence, this invention will benefit the applications which need to execute in a long time period while keeping a high stabilization in performance.

Abstract: A scanning probe microscope, such as an atomic force microscope, and method including z-stage and a bridge structure. A scanner containing a probe is mounted to the z-stage, which is movable in the z-axis to raise and lower the probe. The method reduces thermal drift of the z-stage and the bridge using a combination of heating elements thermally coupled to the z-stage and the bridge, ambient temperature sensors, and a controller to actively control the heating elements to maintain the bridge and the z-stage at an elevated temperature. Ideally, the temperatures in the system are selected so as to reduce drift between the probe and the sample during AFM scanning, wherein the drift is preferably maintained at less than about 1 nm for an ambient temperature change of about 1° C.

Abstract: Provided is a lead-oxide pasted battery plate comprising a lead alloy grid, lead oxide paste and a nonwoven glass fiber mat. The nonwoven glass mat is comprised of glass fibers having a diameter greater than 10 microns, a binder for the glass fibers, and a third component. The third component can comprise cellulosic fibers, glass micro-fibers, polymeric fibers, fillers or mixtures thereof. The presence of the third component restricts the penetration of the lead oxide paste through the thickness of the mat during the plate pasting operation, thereby keeping the process equipment free from the accumulation of lead oxide paste. The component can then dissolve in the battery acid solution, or work synergistically with the battery separator to deliver electrolyte to the lead oxide plate during the operation of the battery.

Abstract: In-service diagnostic testing of containers with a climate control system used in intermodal freight transport includes automatically testing the functioning of the climate control system at a possibly pre-scheduled time which may depend on the period of time since the latest pre-trip inspection. According to the invention in-service diagnostic testing is performed with cargo in the container during transportation from origin to destination at a suitable time before expected arrival to the destination so that the approval resulting from the in-service diagnostic testing is fresh and up-to-date. Results of the in-service diagnostic testing are transmitted wirelessly to a receiver at a central facility where managing and allocating a large number of containers to individual transport tasks is performed, and containers which have not passed the in-service diagnostic testing can be taken out of service for maintenance and repair.

Abstract: A separator (1) for electrode plates (2) in gel storage batteries having two substantially rectangular layers (3, 3?) of a flat separator material, which layers come to lie in mutually superposed relationship. In order to provide less expensive separators for the separation of plate electrodes in gel storage batteries, which have a low electrical resistance and which afford additional protection for the edges and side surfaces and at the same time permit homogenous gel filling of the storage battery, the invention proposes that the two layers of separator material are connected together at least portion-wise in the region of their edges, forming a casing or pocket for the introduction of an electrode plate and a method and battery employing the separator.
