  • Patent number: 6589045
Abstract: A piezoelectric jet lighter is adapted for producing both jet flame and visible in order to selectively light a cigarette, a cigar, and a pipe. The piezoelectric jet lighter includes a gas ejecting pipe having a gas releasable valve connected to a jet nozzle for producing the jet flame and two gas emitting nozzles for producing the visible flames respectively. To operate the piezoelectric lighter, a downward force must be applied on an ignition button to ignite the lighter wherein the gas is emitted from the gas ejecting pipe to the jet flame to produce the jet flame. While the downward force is released, the gas releasable valve is automatically switched for allowing gas transported to the gas emitting nozzles to produce the visible flame.

Abstract: A portable lighter suitable for reaching a state of ignition. The lighter having a lighting mechanism activatable by a single movement of an operator's finger, which finger has a resistance to deformation. The lighting mechanism includes a first actuator movable between a first position and a second position, and a second actuator movable between a third position and a fourth position. The second position and the fourth position define a relative position between the first actuator and the second actuator. The actuators are arranged so that when the first actuator is moved by the single finger movement from the first position to the second position the finger also moves the second actuator from the third position to the fourth position. The relative position is variable according to the fingers resistance to deformation and the lighter reaches the state of ignition only for certain preset values of the relative position.

Abstract: The present invention provides a utility lighter with a safeguard that prevents inadvertent activation by children. Inside the lighter shell, the piezoelectric unit is located between the trigger and the safety button. When the trigger is pulled or pushed, the piezoelectric unit is moved. This movement can either be blocked by the safety button, or allowed to take place alongside the movement of the safety button. When the user holds the safety button and pulls the trigger simultaneously, the piezoelectric unit is blocked and generates a spark. If the trigger is pressed alone it stops before the piezoelectric unit is activated because of its movement backward. Children will find it very difficult to pull the trigger while retaining the safety button, vastly decreasing their chances of activating the lighter.

The displacements are achieved by applying a continuous and increasing force to the activating component in order to ignite the lighter. Whenever a user discontinues the application of force to the activating component, the ignition mechanism returns to an inoperable, locked position. Abstract: The present invention intends to provides a piezoelectric ignition lighter capable of avoiding misuse by children but maintaining excellent operability for normal users without unreasonably increasing actuation load at the initial ignition operation. For this end, the piezoelectric ignition lighter has a valve mechanism, a nozzle 3 and a piezoelectric mechanism 4 at the top of a lighter body 1 and ignites by actuation of an actuation cap 6 integrally molded of polyacetal resin with torsion plates 7,7. The torsion plates 7,7 are separated from the upper end surface 1a of the lighter body 1 by a gap equal to about 60%˜90% of the actuation stroke in the non-actuated condition to provide a normal (light) actuation load at the initial actuation stage. After engagement of the torsion plates 7,7 with the upper end surface of the lighter body 1, resilient load of the torsion plates is added to normal load, thereby increasing the actuation load.

Abstract: A miniature heat source capable of being used in a hand-held device for delivering a metered pulse of fuel to a combustion chamber where it is converted into a pulsed amount of heat. For example, the heat source apparatus can be used in a hand-held cigarette smoking system or within a portable device wherein a microturbine generates electricity, as well as any type of environment where a high energy pulse of heat is desired. The heat source includes a valve such as a sliding, rotatable or timed valve which delivers a metered volume of fuel to the combustion chamber. The valve can deliver the fuel, in an expanded gaseous form, to a venturi conduit which increases the velocity of the gas flow, and delivers the fuel to a combustion chamber where the gas is mixed with air. The combustible mixture is then combusted within the combustion chamber by ignition and/or by catalyzed oxidation.

  • Patent number: 6443727
Abstract: A safety lighter is locked in a non-operable condition with a safety latch operable with a rotatable gear device. The rotatable gear is located in a top surface of the lighter actuator, and is coupled to a rack that moves linearly when the gear is rotated. The rack is extended into or withdrawn from the lighter housing to prevent or permit actuation of the lighter mechanism, respectfully. A lower portion of the rack has a sloped profile to permit the rack to be pushed upward by the lighter housing when the actuation device is returned to a normal, locked position. In the normal, locked position, the rack is driven into the lighter housing by a spring located in the actuator. The actuator mechanism is unlocked by rotating the gear in a direction opposite to that of the rotational direction for operating the actuator. The location of the gear on the top surface of the actuator permits the actuator to be unlocked and operated by an adult in a simple manner, while making the same task difficult for a child.

Abstract: The present invention relates to disposable cigarette lighters which have a latch member which is intended to resist inadvertent operation and to make undesirable operation by unintended operators more difficult. The lighter preferably includes a latch member which in its initial condition blocks movement of the actuator in order to resist operation of the lighter. The latch member is movable to a ready position so that the actuator may be depressed in order to produce a flame. It is preferred that the lighter contain additional or alternative forces on the latch member to improve the ability of the latch member to return to the blocking position over the life of the lighter and to improve the consistency of the latch member's movement and return. In some of the embodiments, this additional or alternative force is provided by a bending moment or flexing force preferably applied to the latch member through a flexing mechanism to flex the latch along at least a portion of its length.
