Abstract: Methods for continuous drying of sludges. Large scouring particles are added to a sludge to be dried to create a mixture which is passed through a rotary screw type indirect heat exchanger. The scouring particles are large relative to the particulates of suspended and dissolved solids which result from drying in the heat exchanger. During the process of drying and conveying the mixture through the heat exchanger the scouring particles continuously remove the particulate residue from the surfaces of the heat exchanger. It also appears that the particles assist in the actual heat transfer between the heat exchanger surfaces and the sludge by absorbing and subsequently releasing heat through relatively large surface areas. The scouring particles can be consumptive, that is, consumed in processes during subsequent handling of the residue, or nonconsumptive.

  • Patent number: 4322205
Abstract: A gas-cooled steel skirt is used to support a refractory cored brick matrix and dome structure in a high temperature regenerative air heater useful in magnetohydrodynamic power generation. The steel skirt thermally expands to accommodate the thermal expansion of the dome structure despite substantial temperature differential thereby reducing relative movement between the dome bricks. Gas cooling of the steel skirt allows the structure to operate above its normal temperature during clean-out cycles and also allows for the control of the thermal expansion of the steel skirt.

  • Patent number: 4290751
Abstract: A hot blast stove for preheating combustion air for an associated blast furnace, having a continuous, substantially cylindrical shaped peripheral wall extending from a base to a domed cover. The peripheral wall includes a first cylindrical portion defined by a refractory ring wall of a predetermined thickness, surrounded by insulation, and enclosed by a continuous metal shell; and, a second, diametrically larger, cylindrical portion disposed above the first cylindrical portion, defined by a continuation of the refractory ring wall of the first portion, surrounded by a predetermined thickness of insulating brick and insulation. The second portion is enclosed by a continuous metal shell which joins the domed cover. An annular interconnecting portion joins the cylindrical portions and includes a metal shell that diverges outwardly from the metal shell of the first portion to obliquely join the metal shell of the cylindrical portion.

  • Patent number: 4253410
Abstract: A refractory brickwork wall having an opening therethrough has incorporated therein, at a position above the opening, a relief brickwork configuration in the form of a gable or roof. The relief brickwork includes a plurality of relief bricks each having an upper inclined surface, a lower inclined surface and a lower, generally horizontal step surface. The relief bricks are arranged one above the other in an inclined formation with the lower inclined surface of the upper relief brick of each pair of adjacent relief bricks resting on the upper inclined surface of the lower relief brick of such pair of adjacent relief bricks, and with the upper relief brick of each pair of adjacent relief bricks being partially offset in a horizontal direction from the lower relief brick of such pair of adjacent relief bricks.

  • Patent number: 4140482
Abstract: A fuel-fired radiant-heating tube for an industrial furnace is provided, at its fuel-feed end externally of the furnace, with an acoustic damper or muffler which comprises a double-wall housing defining two elongated annular flow passages in indirect heat-exchanging relationship through a thermally conductive inner wall. The combustion exhaust gases are conducted through one of these passages while combustion-sustaining gas, e.g. air, is supplied through the other in counterflow to the exhaust gas, thereby preheating the air. The outer wall is provided with acoustic and/or thermal insulation while at least one of the passages is provided with sound-damping elements, e.g. vanes for baffling the flow through this passage.

  • Patent number: 4022572
Abstract: A hot-blast furnace of the type including an outer metal casing and an inner lining of insulating and refractory material has therebetween a layer of foamed glass or foamed silicate material having a structure of closed pores or small cells which are closed in an air tight manner to each other. The layer prevents passage of gas, during operation of the furnace, to the inner surface of the outer metal casing.

  • Patent number: 4003695
Abstract: A stove comprises a metal jacket the inner surface of which has a gunite coating with a layer of metal or a heat-resistant synthetic material sprayed on the surface of said coating to form a continuous gastight cover. The gastight cover is superimposed by heat-insulating and refractory layers. The heat-insulating layer immediately adjacent to the gastight cover is made of kaolin wool which protects the cover against mechanical damage.
