Abstract: A surgical guide to be placed in a patient's mouth. The patient's mouth is scanned to obtain surgical-region scan data at a region where an implant is to be located. The patient's mouth is also scanned in the opened position to acquire dental conditions opposite from the surgical region so as to obtain opposing-condition scan data. A virtual model is developed using the surgical-region scan data and the opposing-condition scan data. Using the virtual model, a surgical plan is developed that includes the location of the implant to be installed in the patient. A virtual surgical guide is also developed based on the surgical plan. The dimensions of instrumentation to be used with the surgical guide are checked to ensure they will fit within the mouth by use of the opposing-condition scan data. After checking, final surgical-guide manufacturing information is obtained for manufacturing the surgical guide.

Abstract: Systems and methods for delivering a substance to a target region in vapor form are provided. A fluid is placed within an interaction zone, where the interaction zone is a volume that extends into the target region or that is adjacent to the target region. A fiber optic tip is placed within the interaction zone. The fiber optic tip contains the substance that is transparent to a first wavelength of energy and that substantially absorbs a second wavelength of energy. A vapor bubble is created within the interaction zone by exposing the fluid to electromagnetic radiation at the first wavelength, where the radiation at the first wavelength is substantially absorbed by the fluid. The substance is released in vapor form into the vapor bubble by exposing the substance to electromagnetic radiation at the second wavelength. The fiber optic tip emits the radiation at the first and second wavelengths.

  • Patent number: 8326413
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the detection of dental caries on the surface of a remaining tooth present underneath a crown are provided. Such an inventive concept involves the utilization of a proper electrically conductive pathway from the crown exterior to the tooth itself, allowing for impedance measurements to be undertaken to determine the degree of potential demineralization within the tooth and/or adhesive loss at the tooth/crown interface, all due to decay attributable to dental caries or like problems. In such a manner, a measuring electrode may be applied to a specific point on the target crown as well as on the adjacent gum, to measure impedance levels for any appreciable decreases which would indicate underlying tooth decay exists. The dental professional may then undertake proper therapeutic measures to treat such tooth locations in order to avoid far more expensive repairs, such as the implementation of bridges or implants.

Abstract: A periodontal structure regeneration composition for treatment of periodontal disease is a mixture of particles of a bone growth material and free collagen. All particles are sized to be less than 1 mm in diameter. The periodontal regeneration composition is injected into the periodontal pocket through an 18 gauge needle. The composition may contain a thickener that increases the viscosity of the composition after the material has been injected into the periodontal pocket. The composition is available in pre-filled syringes offered in a kit that may also contain strips of surgical sponge or gauze that are sized to fit within a periodontal pocket, a tube of adhesive, a dental bur, a probe, a gauze placement tool, gauze counter and a brush for cleaning the dental bur.

Abstract: The present invention regards methods and devices for detecting plaque on a surface in the oral cavity to which a fluorescent agent capable of binding to plaque has been applied, whereby a radiation source emits incident radiation for contacting the surface, reflected light and fluorescent emission resulting from contact of the radiation with the surface is collected by an optical collector and conveyed by an optical pathway in the device, where the optical light signal of the reflected light and fluorescent emission is converted to an electrical signal, and where the electrical signals of the fluorescent emission and the reflected light are then mathematically manipulated to provide a compensated plaque value as a function of the distance from the optical collector and the surface of the oral cavity to which the fluorescent agent has been applied.

Abstract: This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for dental imaging. In one aspect, a hand piece, having a lens for capturing light for an image sensor, is configured for obtaining images of teeth in a mouth. The hand piece is provided with an orientation sensor, such as a gyroscope. The orientation sensor detects the roll, pitch, and yaw of the hand piece. In operation, an image of a tooth is captured at a reference position, and the roll, pitch, and yaw of the hand piece is determined at that position. The hand piece is moved to another position, and additional images of teeth in the mouth are not obtained until the orientation of the hand piece at the other position matches the orientation of the hand piece at the reference position. The reference and second images may be combined, and the similar orientations of the hand piece at the reference and second positions can facilitate the combination by ensuring that the reference and second images are obtained from similar perspectives.
