Abstract: Method and apparatus for sharpening a cutting tool. In some embodiments, an abrasive endless belt is rotated in tension along a neutral plane between spaced apart first and second rollers. A guide assembly has spaced apart first and second guide surfaces which collectively converge to an intervening base surface to form a guide channel. Upon insertion of a blade of a cutting tool into the guide channel, a selected side of the blade contactingly slides against at least a selected one of the first or second guide surfaces and a first portion of a cutting edge of the blade contactingly engages the base surface to serve as a plunge depth limit stop for the blade. The endless belt is contactingly deflected by a second portion of the cutting edge away from the neutral plane to sharpen the second portion while the first portion remains in contact with the base surface.

  • Patent number: 7374470
Abstract: A sharpening apparatus having at least one guide slot, a drive pulley drivingly coupled to a frame and at least one idler pulley rotatably coupled to a support member. The support member is pivotably coupled to the frame. The apparatus includes an endless abrading belt rotatable in a path over the drive pulley and the at least one idler pulley and a biasing member coupled to the frame for biasing the support member toward an engaged position. Pivotal movement of the support member adjusts tension in the belt. A tool is traversed into the guide slot for sharpening a cutting edge thereof. The belt and support member respond to application and release of a force applied to the belt by the cutting edge to decrease and increase, respectively, belt speed to preclude overheating of the cutting edge and damage to the belt and cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 7364498
Abstract: A belt grinding finishing tool incorporates a pair of mounting arms projecting forwardly from a drive housing to support a single abrasive belt entrained around drive and idler pulleys. The first mounting arm is positionally fixed relative to the drive housing, but the second mounting arm is pivotally mounted to permit relative pivotal movement thereof. The dual mounting arm configuration enables a tubular member to be placed between the mounting arms to effect a finishing of opposing sides of the outer surface of the tubular member simultaneously. A support housing detachably mounted on the drive housing includes a support handle that can be selectively connected to alternative attachments mounts formed on the support housing. An actuation lever extending outwardly from the second mounting arm permits the operator to cause pivotal movement of the pivoted second mounting arm to accept the tubular member to be finished between the mounting arms.

  • Patent number: 7322878
Abstract: A belt grinder includes a motor, a driving disc, a contact disc, a grinding belt, and a housing, where the motor and the driving disc are moveable with respect to the contact disc in order to vary the distance between the axis of the contact disc and the axis of the driving disc. An attachment is secured to the belt grinder that includes a contact roll around which the grinding belt is fitted. The center to center distance between the contact roll of the attachment and the contact disc of the belt grinder is maintained as contact rolls of different diameter are used. The motor and driving disc are moveable with respect to the contact disc to vary an angle between the axis of the contact disc and an axis of the driving disc.

  • Patent number: 7273410
Abstract: A guiding and pressing device for a belt sander includes two triangular guiding blocks or sheet-like inclined guiding blocks, which are disposed at suitable positions on a front side frame of the sander and near to a circulating path of a sand belt. The two guiding blocks have opposite inclined surfaces near an edge of the sand belt to restrict the circulating path of the sand belt without damaging the edge of the sand belt. In addition, an elastic pressing or push rod is disposed inside the sand belt and on a backside of the frame in order to frequently push the sand belt outwards and thus to keep the sand belt in a tightened state when the belt sander is sanding.

  • Patent number: 7090560
Abstract: Systems and methods control abrading operations of an abrading machine by sensing characteristics of an abrading article installed on the abrading machine. When a problem is discovered by sensing the article, appropriate actions may be taken. As one example, the abrading article may be sensed to determine whether the abrading article has been installed with an abrasive side facing the wrong direction. An alert allows an operator to reinstall the article. As another example, the abrading article may be sensed to determine whether splicing tape is present to hold two pieces of abrading tape together. The article may be advanced until the splicing tape is beyond an abrading zone. As another example, the abrading article may be sensed to determine whether the abrading article has stopped moving while the article drive is advancing because the article has broken. An alert allows an operator to repair the break.
