Abstract: An attachment for an oscillatory sanding or abrading device has a pair of flexible support members for supporting the sanding or abrading material. The initial radius of curvature of the flexible support member may be adjusted by a spring loaded adjustment mechanism. An opposing pair of circular recesses formed in opposing faces of the flexible sheets allows for replacement of the springs. The recesses can be formed at both ends of the flexible sheets. Adjustment of the initial radius of curvature is accomplished by inserting springs of varying sizes into one or both pairs of recesses. The radius of curvature of the flexible support member during the sanding process is then a function of the spring constant of the spring used and the applied pressure. The device thus uses a series of discrete adjustments each of which covers a range of contoured shapes.

  • Patent number: 6129617
Abstract: This invention relates to reciprocating saws, and to abrasive sanding attachments and blades for such saws, to facilitate the oscillating, the reciprocating sanding, and the shaping of straight, curved, concave or convex surfaces, with abrasive cutting surfaces. The invention described herein fits and mounts in blade holders currently in use on scroll saws, and is designed to take advantage of pin-end and plain pinless-end saw blade mounting methods as applied to holding an abrasive member. This invention increases the versatility and use of the scroll saw and related C-shaped saws, as tools for use in intricate, delicate, and controlled woodworking, metalworking, and finishing. Methods for making abrasive member holders 40, 68, 74, 84, 104, 112, 124, 142, and 160 are disclosed. The holders can be mounted on pin-end blade or pin-less blade scroll saws using abrasive member head, extenders and pivot heads.

  • Patent number: 6120363
Abstract: A main body containing an electric motor reciprocally driving a rigid longitudinal extension which is frictionally suspended within a graspable sleeve may be held to guide a selected abrasive tool head coupled to the front end of the extension. Power may be supplied by a battery, rechargeable or replaceable, or by alternating current through a cord. A vacuum connected to a sanding head having a porous pad backed by an airtight manifold and attachable to the main body may run on alternating current or a battery. The sleeve may be connected to the main body to provide a continuous uninterrupted exterior. The speed may be varied with use of a variable resistor. An appropriate length stroke is obtained with a sufficiently large diameter driven disc pivotally connected to the extension with a rigid link arm. The tool may be used for powered sanding, scraping, or scrubbing with a wire brush, a bristle brush or an absorbent pad.
