Reciprocating Tool Patents (Class 451/356)
  • Patent number: 5993304
Abstract: A hand tool includes an apparatus housing (2), a drive shaft part (10) which is rotatable in the housing, and toolholder part (18) which is mounted pivotably in the housing, is operatively connected to the drive shaft part and has a securing portion (24) projecting from the housing for the purpose of receiving a file, for example. A shaft journal (30) is secured in the drive shaft part (10) and is eccentrically positioned (R) in relation to the center line (A) of the drive shaft part. The shaft journal (30) supports, on its section (48) outside the drive shaft part, a movement-transmitting member (50') with an outer limit surface (52'). This member is arranged in drive engagement with a recess (54) in the end portion of the toolholder part (18) located inside the apparatus housing (2). In the recess (54) the movement-transmitting member (50') can move transverse to the toolholder part (18), with the outside (52') rolling against adjoining contact surfaces (56, 58) which delimit the recess.

  • Patent number: 5919085
Abstract: An abrading tool uses oscillatory motion to achieve abrading, such as for polishing or grinding operations. The abrading tool has a spindle capable of mounting an abrading pad. A motor of the tool has an output shaft and a cam unit on the output shaft which is partially received in a cam follower mounted on the spindle produces the oscillating motion. A self-aligning bearing interconnects the cam unit and cam follower to reduce vibration and noise. • Patent number: 5885145
Abstract: A powered drywall sander and painter has a proximally located variable speed motor and a motor housing connected to a hollow lower handle. An upper handle telescopes into the interior of the lower handle. The motor rotates a drive shaft within the handles. The upper handle is fastened to an anti-rotation spring with an adjustable sleeve clamp. The upper end of the spring is clamped to a bottom slide to prevent rotational movement therebetween. A top slide having a sanding pad slidably engages the bottom slide. The rotation of the drive shaft is converted to lateral motion of the sanding pad at a distal end of the drive shaft. The sanding pad is free to swivel. The sanding attachment may be interchangeably replaced with a painting attachment. The painting attachment has a paint brush pad with bristles and a paint cup with a centrally located aperture which delivers paint to the paint cup. The painting attachment converts the rotational motion of the drive shaft into rotational motion of the paint brush pad.

  • Patent number: 5851141
Abstract: This invention pertains to a power sander particularly useful in the trade of painting, specifically designed when painting louvered doors having parallel slats at an angle therein. When painting unpainted louvered doors, a primer must first be applied. To enhance the smoothness and attractiveness of the same, the primer must be sanded and up to this date it could only be done by hand because no appropriate tools where available. The tool of this invention solves the above noted problem. It is a hand held and light weight tool having an elongated blade extending from its forward end. The blade in its lateral extent is somewhat tapered but the thickness remains the same and it conforms to the space between adjacent slats. The mechanism inside the housing of the tool drives the blade in an orbital manner to simulate hand sanding. The blade has abrasive grit thereon and will sand the surfaces of two confronting slats at the same time.

  • Patent number: 5704829
Abstract: A compact, hand-held tool for safely deburring the edges of a skate blade. The tool utilizes a pair of resiliently biased deburring surfaces which are movable between an open position and a closed position. The deburring surfaces are resiliently biased in the open position by a biasing means such as a leaf spring. In the open position, any size or shape skate blade can be readily inserted between the deburring surfaces. A user can apply pressure between his/her thumb and fingers to engage the deburring surfaces against the skate blade edges. The width of the skate blade determines the extent of the closed position. • Patent number: 5484328
Abstract: Apparatus for working the surface of a workpiece that includes a crankshaft having a shank and two offset arms for rotation about the shank. A sanding belt is connected between the arms and is arranged to move through a reciprocal path of travel as the crankshaft is rotated in one direction. The shank is secured in the chuck of a hand-held tool such as a drill which provides motive power to the crankshaft.

  • Patent number: 5482499
Abstract: A sanding apparatus comprises a sanding member having on a lower end thereof a flat sanding plate, and being able to oscillate a drive unit for oscillating the sanding member; a motion converting means having an oscillating arm, connected to a rotating output shaft of the drive unit, for converting a rotational motion of the output shaft to an oscillation motion; and a connecting means for connecting the oscillating arm of the motion converting means at one end thereof with the sanding member. The connecting means permits an adjustment of a securing angle of the sanding member to the oscillating arm of the motion converting means.

  • Patent number: 5470272
Abstract: A removable working tool assembly that can be used with a power driven tool having a drive shaft. The removable working tool assembly includes a drive member which can operably connected to the drive shaft and a support member having a tool surface. One of the drive and support members defines a male connection mechanism while the other one of the members defines a female connection mechanism such that the members can be simply connected and disconnected without the need for tools or any other fastener elements. This allows various support members to be easily changed to facilitate the use of different tool surfaces such as sanders, grinders, scrapers or the like.

  • Patent number: 5464366
Abstract: A portable abrading tool including a cylinder body containing a piston which is reciprocable relative to the body under the control of a valve mechanism, a shoe for carrying sandpaper or another abrading element which is reciprocated in a straight line by the piston but oppositely from the reciprocating movement of the piston, a counterweight which is reciprocated essentially in unison with the piston but oppositely from the shoe, and means yieldingly urging the piston and counterweight in a predetermined axial direction and yieldingly urging the shoe in the opposite direction relative to the body to assure that when the operation of the tool is stopped the moving parts of the tool will automatically return to a position in which the valve mechanism is able to deliver fluid to the piston and cylinder structure in a manner recommencing the reciprocating movement.

  • Patent number: 5441450
Abstract: A power tool, especially a handheld sander, is described, possessing a motor-driven drive shaft that can be alternatively coupled either by means of an oscillation drive to an oscillatory tool drive shaft, or by means of a rotary drive to a rotary tool receptacle coaxial with the oscillatory tool drive shaft. Switching is provided by a switching element, in a first switch position of which the drive shaft is driven in an oscillating manner about the lengthwise axis of the oscillatory tool drive shaft, with a small pivot angle and at high frequency, by means of the oscillation drive, which can consist for example of an eccentric element on the tool drive shaft and a pivot element guided slidingly thereon and fastened on the tool drive shaft. In the second switch position of the switching element, however, the working engagement of the oscillation drive is abolished, and the tool receptacle is rotationally driven by the drive shaft by means of a bevel gear linkage.

  • Patent number: 5437571
Abstract: Providing an oscillating tool for sanding a surface. The tool having a body defining an internal cavity which has a motor located therein. The motor has a motor shaft oriented in parallel alignment with the body. A crank is affixed to the motor which has a crank pin projecting therefrom. A lever arm is pivotably affixed to the body for rotation about a pivot axis generally perpendicular to the motor shaft. A lever arm cooperates with the crank pin to cause the lever arm to cyclically pivot back and forth in response to rotation of a motor shaft. A pad support is adapted to receive a work member. The planar pad support is affixed to the lever arm at a location spaced apart from the pivot axis and oscillates therewith. The pad support is provided with a substantially 90.degree. forward corner formed by a pair of facet edges. A pair of outwardly inclined straight side edges extend rearwardly from the facet edges on opposite sides of the pad center line.
