Abstract: A highly agile low phase noise frequency synthesizer is provided for rapid generation of frequency specific signals. The frequency synthesizer is capable of rapidly generating signals at different output frequencies while maintaining low cross-coupling. Two or more signal generators utilize a reference frequency to generate two or more signals. These signals are limit processed to reduce cross-coupling prior to being presented to a switch. Responsive to a control signal, the switch outputs one of the signals to a frequency modification device, such as a frequency divider or multiplier. Responsive to a control signal, the frequency modification device scales the frequency of the switch output to convert the frequency of the switch output signal to a desired output frequency. By maintaining sufficient frequency separation between the switch input signals cross-coupling and phase noise is minimized and implementation on an integrated circuit may be achieved.

Abstract: In a wireless communication system which may include a mobile device having an integrated FM radio transmitter and a FM radio receiver, a geographic location of the mobile device may be determined. A FM channel map may be determined based on the location and the FM radio transmitter may be configured for transmitting FM signals based on the FM channel map, which may include a list of ranked FM channels. The geographic location may be acquired from received RDS or RBDS signals, received GPS signals, other received wireless signals, and/or from user data. Channel spacing, channel offset and/or frequency band may be determined for the FM channel map. A frequency for transmitting FM signals via the FM radio transmitter may be selected based on the determined FM channel map. The FM radio receiver may also be configured for receiving FM signals based on the determined FM channel map.

  • Patent number: 7397311
Abstract: A first receiver frequency reference is passively coupled to a second receiver by tapping a signal directly from the resonant element, such as a crystal, of an oscillator in the first receiver to drive the input of the second receiver. The sinusoidal signal from the resonant element is relatively free of harmonics and minimizes interference that could be caused by harmonics of a square wave signal coupling or an amplified signal. The oscillator of each receiver can be selectively enabled or disabled to allow the receiver to either generate or receive the frequency reference. This technique of coupling can be used to couple a frequency reference signal between integrated circuit receivers.

  • Patent number: 7383032
Abstract: A cellular phone and method for receiving and transmitting signals of different frequency bands and wireless standards utilizes an architecture that allows the use of switches that are less expensive and less lossy than switches used in comparable cellular phones. The architecture also allows the use of only narrow-banded antennas, rather than a combination of a narrow-banded antenna and a harmonic antenna. As a result, the performance of the cellular phone can be significantly improved.

  • Patent number: 7373121
Abstract: The invention is directed to an apparatus, method and system for providing reduced power consumption, fast processing of digitized communication signals and relatively easy reconfiguration for different applications, such as communication protocols/standards. The invention recognizes that the processing of signals associated with different types of communication standards can be recharacterized as deterministic data flows. Also, for each deterministic data flow, several of the same categories of computation are performed in substantially the same manner, albeit in a different order or somewhat differently, that is unique to a particular application. Based on this recharacterization, the invention divides the processing of the deterministic data flow for a communication signal among several Class processors that are separately configurable to optimize their particular category/class of computation in the processing of the signal.

  • Patent number: 7333468
Abstract: A packet stream multiplexer may include one or more control loops (e.g., digital phase locked loops) for tracking the source clock frequency associated with a packet stream. A first control loop may slowly drive an error between a received timestamp and an estimated timestamp to zero. A second control loop may more quickly drive a first derivative of the error to zero. The second control loop may include a set of digital filters ordered according to tracking speed. The output of the slowest filter is initially selected for updating the source clock frequency estimate. As time progresses, the faster filters are selected in succession. The estimated source clock frequency is used to restamp packets of the packet stream as they are sent out onto an output channel.

  • Patent number: 7283794
Abstract: A system is disclosed for interfacing a wireless communication device baseband module and a radio frequency integrated circuit. The system accepts a control signal from the baseband module. The control signal from the baseband module is generally at a first baseband voltage. The first baseband voltage is generally the baseband operating voltage level. The system distributes the control signal, via data latches, to a plurality of local level shifters. The plurality of local level shifters are associated with components of the radio frequency integrated circuit. The local level shifters convert the control signal to a shifted control signal at a second voltage level. The second voltage level is generally the component operating voltage. The shifted control signal may be maintained at the component while the radio frequency integrated circuit is intermittently shutdown. The system eliminates the need to reprogram radio frequency integrated circuit components after the shutdown period.

Abstract: A multimode wireless terminal suitable for received level monitoring for a base station serving as an intersystem handover destination includes a first wireless transmitter-receiver unit for GSM, a second wireless transmitter-receiver unit for WCDMA, and a communication processor unit and an antenna switch unit connected to these wireless transmitter-receiver units. While conducting communication with a WCDMA network system via the second wireless transmitter-receiver unit, a level of a signal received from a GSM base station is monitored via the first wireless transmitter-receiver unit. A communication processor unit determines whether the level monitoring is interfered with by a WCDMA transmission signal, on the basis of a relation between a WCDMA transmission frequency and a reception frequency supplied from the GSM base station.

  • Patent number: 7162214
Abstract: An energy-saving method for wireless reception of data modulated on a carrier signal is carried out in a receiver circuit including a first group and a second group of circuit elements. The first group of the circuit elements required for recovering the data from the modulated carrier signal are supplied intermittently with electrical energy, while the remaining circuit elements of the second group are supplied with uninterrupted electrical energy. After an intermittent unpowered phase without electrical energy being supplied to the first group of circuit elements, the receiver can be operated in the next intermittent powered phase of the second group of circuit elements with parameters that determined the receiver properties which were present in the last reception phase and that have been stored, thus eliminating the time required for renewed tuning in.

  • Patent number: 7103342
Abstract: A system and a method are provided for reducing the effects of spurious frequencies in a wireless communications device. The system comprises a processor having a reference frequency input and a clock having an output connected to the processor input. The clock supplies a clock frequency, or reference frequency, to the processor. The reference frequency is the frequency at which the processor operates. The clock also has an input for selecting a reference frequency to provide to the processor. The system also includes a transceiver having a plurality of selectable communications passbands. If the wireless communications device is a telephone, for example, the transceiver frequency (passband) may change as a function of the mode in which the phone is operating (AMPS, PCS, GSM, CDMA, or W-CDMA). In response to changing operating modes (transceiver passband), the clock frequency is adjusted.
