Patent number: 9313862Abstract: A system by which high beam lights on motor vehicles are automatically dimmed when a similarly equipped vehicle is approaching from an oncoming direction utilizes transmitted radio frequency (RF) signals between vehicles which operate at a preset range. Vehicles equipped with the system also comprise front, rear, and side vehicle sensors to differentiate RF signals transmitted from oncoming or trailing vehicles. A receiving antenna portion of the system picks up an RF signal, verifies there are no proximal side or trailing vehicles, and deactivates the high beam circuit for a preset period of time. All vehicles equipped with the system provide an RF signal having a digital identification code to prevent interference. The system is preferably introduced as a retrofit kit for installation upon existing vehicles; however, the system may also be incorporated on new vehicles.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 2012Date of Patent: April 12, 2016Inventor: Levi G. Mobile communication devices process environmental inputs and transmit mobile communication device context information to a communication management system. The context information may, for example, reflect the motion and/or geographic location of the mobile device, and may reflect the risk associated with using the device to handle a call or other communications session. The communication management system uses the context information, optionally in combination with communication device profiles, to determine how to manage incoming and/or ongoing calls or other communication sessions. Mobile device users may also be inhibited from initiating communication sessions.Type: GrantFiled: February 29, 2008Date of Patent: January 21, 2014Assignee: Aegis Mobility, Inc.Inventors: Andrew S. Patent number: 8635013Abstract: A cooperative event location system is provided having a first system in a first vehicle and a second system. The first system includes a first event detection component to detect an occurrence of an event, a first measurement component to determine a distance traveled from the event, a first processing component coupled to the event detection component and the measurement component to prepare an event message, and a first short-range communication component coupled to the processing component and configured to transmit the event message to the second system remote from the first system. The second system includes a second short-range communication component to receive the event message, a satellite navigation component to provide location information, and a processing component coupled to the second communication component and the satellite navigation component to determine in latitude and longitude coordinates a location of the event.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2009Date of Patent: January 21, 2014Assignee: C.R.F. Patent number: 8624718Abstract: An electronic communication system provides text or voice messages to remote receiving devices, such as cell phones or PDA's. The remote receiving devices are equipped with velocity sensors, or position sensors from which velocity may be inferred. The remote receiving devices periodically report a velocity or current position to an alert signal control node of the communication system. The alert signal control node determines a most recent-determinable velocity for each receiving device before transmitting a message alert signal. If the velocity exceeds a predetermined threshold, the alert signal may be delayed until the velocity drops below the threshold. The system may be operated as a safety measure to prevent reception of distracting alert signals while driving, thereby silencing messaging devices at appropriate times.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2013Date of Patent: January 7, 2014Inventor: Gary Stephen Shuster

Patent number: 8606292Abstract: Methods and corresponding systems are provided for limiting mobile station operation when multiple mobile stations are moving together in a group. Such group movement includes but is not limited to movement in a vehicle. According to disclosed methods, a determination is made that multiple mobile stations are moving substantially together, and in response to the determination, operation of one or more of the mobile stations is limited.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2010Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Warren B. Patent number: 8606217Abstract: A communication control unit for transmitting data via a transmission pathway between a tachograph and a data processing facility. The transmission pathway contains at least one partial section for a wireless transmission. The communication control unit comprises a GSM module and/or a module for wireless data transmission with the data processing device. A system, which additionally contains a tachograph and a data processing facility. The tachograph and a communication control unit associated therewith are disposed in a vehicle and said data processing facility is disposed outside said vehicle. Using the communication control unit, a method for transmitting data via a transmission pathway between a tachograph and a data processing facility is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 2008Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Assignee: Continental Automotive GmbHInventors: Michael Gut, Patrik Helbig, Ulrich Münch

Patent number: 8598977Abstract: A method and system for monitoring and controlling driver performance in a controlled driving environment. A portable information device is provided to a driver who registers with a server computer for controlling vehicle operation in the driving environment. A record for the driver is stored in a database associated with the server computer. A vehicle is activated using the portable information device for at least an amount of time exceeding a preset threshold value. A speed level and a safety level for the vehicle are dynamically set based on the driver's performance in the driving environment. The driver's performance is monitored in the controlled driving environment and each driving violation that occurs is determined. Violation points are assigned to the driver based on each driving violation and the violation points are added to the driver record stored in the database.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2011Date of Patent: December 3, 2013Assignee: Tiny Towne International LLCInventors: Pierre Maalouf, Georges Moussa

Patent number: 8571486Abstract: What is disclosed is a user interface system for controlling a process, where the process is implemented in a machine system. The user interface system includes a user interface configured to receive user input to control the process of the machine system. The user interface system also includes a first transceiver coupled to the user interface and configured to provide user power to the user interface, where the first transceiver is configured to wirelessly receive input power from a second transceiver. The user interface system also includes a processing system configured to monitor a performance factor of the first transceiver, process the performance factor to determine when a power transfer problem exists between the second transceiver and the first transceiver, and transfer an alert in response to the power transfer problem.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2010Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Michael L.
