  • Patent number: 8825040
Abstract: The present invention presents a method and a controller for selecting the type of connection used to connect a terminal device to a serving base station. The connection type is selected on the basis of monitored communication-environmental parameters of the terminal device. The selection is made between a direct cellular radio connection and a relayed cellular radio connection. The relayed connection is established through another terminal device acting as a relay terminal for the connection being relayed. A direct device-to-device link between the two terminal devices is established as a cognitive radio connection, and a radio access technology and communication parameters of the device-to-device link may be negotiated between the terminal devices. The relay terminal then links the device-to-device link to a direct cellular radio connection between the relay terminal and the serving base station.

  • Patent number: 8787323
Abstract: Peer to peer communication timing, e.g., for an ad hoc network, is referenced with respect to an external broadcast signal from a terrestrial or satellite based transmitter. Wireless terminals, seeking to communicate via peer to peer communications, receive the reference broadcast signal, and set their internal timing structure with respect to the reference signal. This facilitates peer to peer timing coordination. A wireless terminal transmits a signal, e.g., a user beacon signal identifying its presence, during a time interval during which another wireless terminal is expected to be monitoring. Reference signal based coordinated timing and use of user beacon signals allows the wireless terminals to maintain situational awareness and coordinate peer to peer communications, while keeping power consumption low, since wireless terminal modules can be powered down during predetermined intervals in the coordinated timing structure where the wireless terminal does not need to transmit and/or receive.

Abstract: System(s), apparatus(es), and method(s) are provided for diagnosing performance issues of wireless equipment (WE) or a wireless network through an alternative communication channel enabled by an alternative wireless network available to the WE. A service platform (SP) probes performance condition of the WE through a mobility control node (MCN) and, in response to a fault condition, collects data related to operation of the WE. Based at least on part of the data, the SP diagnoses the fault condition and related performance issue(s). To probe performance, the SP requests the MCN to collect data related to performance metric(s) of the WE. The alternative communication channel is established, and such data is collected therefrom, in response to low-grade connectivity amongst the MCN and the WE. The SP notifies the WE of at least the fault condition through the MCN or, in case of network fault condition, via the alternative communication channel.
