Handoff Initiated By Another Source (e.g., Target, User Initiated, Mobile Switching Center (msc), Or Mobile Telephone Switching Office (mtso), Etc.) Patents (Class 455/439)
  • Patent number: 9179377
Abstract: The invention relates to handover of a mobile station (12) from a source cell to a target cell when the identity of the target cell in a wireless communication network (10, 11) is ambiguous, a source base station (14) defining the source cell receives an event from the mobile station comprising a cell identifier, investigates if there are more cells in the neighborhood sharing the same cell identifier and sends a handover instruction to the mobile station comprising an identity ambiguity indicator if there are more cells sharing the same cell identifier. The mobile station autonomously initiates establishment of a connection to a target base station defining the target cell based on the identity ambiguity indicator in order to effect handover.

Abstract: A method of performing a handover in a wireless communication system employing a macro base station and a femto base station is provided. The method comprising: monitoring an uplink signal transmitted from a user equipment to the macro base station; transmitting a handover initiation message to the macro base station on the basis of a result of comparing the uplink signal's strength obtained by the monitoring with a reference value; and performing a handover of the user equipment from the macro base station to the femto base station. According to the present invention, there is provided a method of initiating a handover by a femto base station by fining user equipments located in a cell coverage of the femto base station. In addition, a signaling overhead is reduced by utilizing previously existing information such as uplink transmit power.

  • Patent number: 9161282
Abstract: The invention relates to a handover method for redirecting an ongoing communication of a connected cellular device (UE) from a serving cell (SRV_C) to a target cell (TGT_C). Both cells (SRV_C, TGT_C) belong to a network. The method comprises receiving, in the connected cellular device (UE), a cell attenuation measurement, a supplemental hysteresis parameter which value depends on the load of the target cell (TGT_C), and a threshold parameter. The method comprises comparing, in the connected cellular device (UE), an additive combination of the cell attenuation measurement, of a hysteresis parameter and of the supplemental hysteresis parameter with the threshold parameter. The method comprises sending, from the connected cellular device (UE), a measurement report to the network, if the result of the comparison remains positive during a given duration. The invention also relates to a cellular device (UE) and to a computer program implementing the aforementioned method.

  • Patent number: 9130791
Abstract: Techniques for efficiently deriving uplink channel estimates without consuming much additional uplink resources are described. A user equipment (UE) may send a request for uplink resources on a request channel (REQCH) whenever the UE desires to transmit data on the uplink. The UE may send the REQCH on a set of subcarriers and from multiple antennas, e.g., send REQCH data on data subcarriers and pilot on pilot subcarriers. A node B may receive the request, estimate the complex channel gains for the pilot subcarriers based on received pilot symbols, and coherently demodulate received data symbols based on the channel gain estimates. The Node B may estimate the complex channel gains for the data subcarriers based on demodulated data symbols and derive a channel estimate for each UE antenna based on the channel gain estimates for the pilot and data subcarriers. The Node B may use the channel estimates for MIMO scheduling, subband scheduling, and rate selection.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for detecting breaks in a wireless network data model. An exemplary method includes determining neighboring access points from scans of network access points in a space. Each neighboring access point occurs together in a scan of a particular level of the space. Wireless data is received from a plurality of mobile devices moving through a space. A set of all access points for the space is identified based on the wireless data. A ratio is derived based on a difference between the neighboring access points and the set of all access points. The ratio represents a percentage of missing access points for the particular level of the space.

Abstract: A method of associating a mobile station to a base station in a wireless communication system comprises transmitting to a serving base station a scanning request message comprising an association indicator. The method also comprises receiving from the serving base station a scanning response message comprising a rendezvous time associated with a neighboring base station for initiating ranging with the neighboring base station, wherein the serving base station communicates an association notification to the neighboring base station, the association notification comprising the rendezvous time. The method also comprises associating with the neighboring base station by transmitting a ranging request after passing of the rendezvous time determined from a transmission time of the scanning response message from the neighboring base station, wherein the rendezvous time is associated with a time the neighboring base station is expected to provide a non-contention based ranging opportunity for the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 8989674
Abstract: A cellular communications system is described in which a mobile cellular device can, if necessary, obtain cell measurements for cells contained within a first cell list after it has received a second cell list. The mobile device then reports the cell measurements for cells within both lists so that a best candidate cell is less likely to be discarded in a cell handover procedure. A network node is also disclosed that can receive cell measurements for cells within a first cell list after the node has issued a second cell list. The node then uses the received cell measurement data to control a handover procedure.

  • Patent number: 8983472
Abstract: A method and system supporting handoff of a multimedia call session using background network scanning is disclosed. A mobile multimedia handset may engage in the exchange of a multimedia information stream via a first wireless network, and may sniff a portion of radio frequency spectrum for a second wireless network. Information about available services and network quality of service for the second network may be received by querying the second wireless network or from advertising by the second wireless network. Hand-off between the two networks may be based upon the results of the comparison and one or more user-defined criteria, and the handoff may be synchronized according to predefined events in the stream of multimedia information.

  • Patent number: 8983468
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for routing messages between an end node and an access node via another access node are described. Physical layer identification information is used when identifying a remote, e.g., adjacent, access node as a message destination. Thus, when a connection identifier based on one or more physical layer identifiers is available to a wireless terminal, e.g., from one or more downlink signals received from a destination access node, the wireless terminal can use the connection identifier corresponding to the destination node to route a message via an access node with which it has an established uplink connection. Such connection identifier information can be used even when other addressing information, e.g., network layer address information, associated with the destination access node, may not be available to the wireless terminal.

  • Patent number: 8977265
Abstract: A method for minimizing handoff latencies when a handoff is performed in a wireless network. An access point (AP) or base station associated to a current wireless station (STA) allows information required for a reassociation to the STA to be propagated to handoff-capable neighboring APs or base stations. When the STA moves, a neighboring AP or base station performs the reassociation to the STA on the basis of context. When a handoff procedure is performed, the time taken to receive context of a corresponding STA is reduced, such that a fast handoff can be implemented.
