  • Patent number: 8909222
Abstract: A method is disclosed for registering a mobile terminal with a cellular telecommunications network, the network having a plurality of location areas and a plurality of extended areas of coverage, each extended area being represented by a list of a subset of cells on one or more the location areas, and the mobile terminal using information about a given one of the location areas to connect to the network. The method comprises transmitting a signal including a temporary identifier, which is unique to the mobile terminal when combined with the location area identifier that identifies the cell in which the temporary identifier was allocated a temporary identifier; transmitting an indication of whether the mobile terminal supports location registration based on extended areas (“soft location registration”); and if soft location registration is supported, performing location registration based on the extended area between the mobile terminal and the network.

Abstract: Ambiguity (e.g., confusion) associated with access point identifiers may be resolved by querying candidate target access points and/or by using historical records indicative of one or more access points that the access point has previously accessed. For example, messages may be sent to access points that are assigned the same identifier to cause the access points to monitor for a signal from an access terminal that received the identifier from a target access point. The target access point may then be identified based on any responses that indicate that a signal was received from the access terminal. A mapping may be maintained for that access terminal that maps the identifier to that access point so that the mapping may be used to resolve any future confusion associated with the use of that identifier by that access terminal.

After triggering the RRC connection reestablishment, the terminal searches for a cell used for RRC connection reestablishment to use the cell as a target cell, and receives an SIB1 message corresponding to the target cell; extracts first base station identification information from the SIB1 message, and compare the first base station identification information with second base station identification information saved by the terminal; if the two pieces of information are consistent, the terminal camps on the target cell and sends an RRC connection reestablishment request message to a base station to which the target cell belongs, so that the base station to which the target cell belongs performs the RRC connection reestablishment with the terminal.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate performing fast cell selection in a user device wherein the user device can select a serving sector from a list of sectors in its virtual active set (VAS), while in communication with a wireless network. The serving sector can be different from a nominal sector whose scrambling code the user device employs for transmission on the uplink, which scrambling code can be known to all sectors listed in the VAS for the user device. In this manner, all sectors in whose coverage area the user device is located can be included in the user device's VAS and can receive and demodulate transmissions there from.

Abstract: Transmit power for an access point is controlled based on measurement reports received by the access point from one or more access terminals that are not currently being served by the access point. In some aspects, transmit power is controlled based on the number of received messages that correspond to a particular event. In some aspects, transmit power is controlled based on the contents of the received messages. For example, the access point may use signal strength information included in the messages to determine a level of transmit power that mitigates interference at a defined subset of reporting access terminals.

  • Patent number: 8848669
Abstract: A system and method wherein mobile nodes scan both 802.16 and 802.11 radio channels for neighbor access points. A mobile node reports both WiMax and WiFi neighbor access points to its parent access point. A parent access point advertises both WiMax and WiFi neighbor access points to child mobile nodes to facilitate faster roaming and load balancing. A parent WiMax AP can direct a mobile node to roam to a neighbor WiFi access point that has a lighter load or offers enhanced services. As an option, a location tracking protocol is used to determine the location of a mobile node and the mobile node's parent AP advertises neighbor APs that offer services in the mobile node's location.

Abstract: A method for minimizing handoff latencies when a handoff is performed in a wireless network. An access point (AP) or base station associated to a current wireless station (STA) allows information required for a reassociation to the STA to be propagated to handoff-capable neighboring APs or base stations. When the STA moves, a neighboring AP or base station performs the reassociation to the STA on the basis of context. When a handoff procedure is performed, the time taken to receive context of a corresponding STA is reduced, such that a fast handoff can be implemented.
