  • Patent number: 8155025
Abstract: Spectrum monitoring measurements are made by microcell base stations in a layered cellular network, while not serving calls or engaged in processing calls. The microcell base station transmits a first control message from to a microcell mobile station, to increase the duration for the mobile station to reside in the camping state on a control channel of the microcell base station. The microcell base station transmits a second control message from the microcell base station to the microcell mobile station, to increase the duration for the mobile station to reside in a call origination state while attempting to access a control channel of the microcell base station. Then, to perform the spectrum monitoring measurement, the base station's transmitter is turned off, the receiver is retuned to the frequency to be monitored, a signal strength measurement taken on that frequency, the receiver is retuned back to its assigned frequency, and the transmitter is turned back on, all in a short time interval.

  • Patent number: 8145214
Abstract: The present invention discloses a solution for improving scan time in a co-banded mobile communication device. The solution can maintain a set of records within a data store of a co-banded mobile communication device. The set of records can include two or more communication rasters that represent an overlap between frequency bands used by different access technologies supported by the mobile communication device. A frequency band for a first access technology can be scanned for communication rasters allocated for that access technology. For each occupied communication raster, a related record of the set of maintained records can be updated to indicate that the communication raster is occupied. A frequency band for a second access technology can then be scanned within a previously determined time threshold of the first scan. The second scanning attempt can skip those communication rasters indicated as occupied by the set of records.

The serving BS determines the power availability for transmit antennas in the floating CoMP cell that are shared with other floating CoMP cells, and scales the tentative precoding weights based on the power availability of the shared transmit antennas to determine final precoding weights so that the power constraints of the shared transmit antennas will not be violated.

The femtocell can comprise a USB Transceiver Station that is connected to a personal computer through a universal serial bus port, which provides both power and a multi-megabit per second connection between the personal computer and the USB transceiver station. The USB transceiver station can comprise a microcontroller to manage signaling between the RF front end/baseband processor and the personal computer, as well as a precise timing mechanism to assist the synchronization of femtocell timing with the surrounding macrocellular network, if it is present. The USB transceiver station can have a compact form factor that facilitates a high degree of portability by the subscriber, such as being readily attachable to their keychain.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method for generating a radio-frequency coverage map. The method includes receiving coverage map data comprising a plurality of locations within a region, and an identification of a location in the plurality of locations corresponding to a radio transceiver, wherein the locations within the region are represented by at least corresponding x- and y-terms of a Cartesian coordinate system. The method further includes receiving calibration data comprising a plurality of observed signal strength values at corresponding ones of the plurality of locations, converting the x- and y-terms of the locations of the coverage map data to corresponding first and second warped coordinate terms of a warped coordinate system, and computing, using linear interpolation and the first and second warped coordinate terms, predicted received signal strength values at one or more locations in the coverage map based on the calibration data.

Abstract: Network node control is described that includes node wakeup scheduling that reduces the energy consumption of levels of nodes and reduces the delay of information transfer through the network. The node wakeup scheduling includes a crossed ladder pattern that combines two wakeups in one level. The node wakeup scheduling also includes an adaptive version of the crossed ladder pattern that changes the wakeup patterns of the crossed ladder over time to provide uniform energy savings. The network node control also includes the use of multiple trees to transfer information through a network. This multi-parent node assignment assigns multiple parents with different wakeup schedules to each node in the network. This multi-parent assignment reduces the delay in transmission of information through the network and also increases energy efficiency in the nodes.

  • Patent number: 7974621
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transitioning between radio link protocols in a packet-based real-time media communication system. A wireless communication device such as a cell phone will operate under one radio link protocol (such as IS-856, also known as 1xEV-DO) to engage in packet-based signaling for setup of a packet-based real-time media session such as a push-to-talk session. Once the session is set up, the wireless communication device will then automatically transition to operate under a different radio link protocol (such as IS-2000, also known as 1xRTT), and will engage in packet-based real-time media communication in the session over that different radio link protocol. Preferably, the radio link protocol used for session setup signaling will provide for reduced setup latency, while the radio link protocol used for bearer communication in the session will provide for reduced jitter and improved real-time media communication.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer-readable media are provided for allowing a mobile device to maintain communication connectivity during a handoff between wireless access points. In one aspect, the method may include negotiating security association information and establishing a first communication tunnel by tunneling an inner IP address within a first outer IP address. The method may further include authenticating a request for establishing a second communication tunnel by identifying the negotiated security association information within the request. Additionally, the method may include establishing the second communication tunnel by tunneling the inner IP address within a second outer IP address. Moreover, the method may include pushing data associated with the communication session through the second communication tunnel.

Abstract: A Ubicell base station includes a Ubicell base station, one or more Ubicell core network elements, and an integrated management server. The Ubicell base identifies position information thereof using a GPS module, and at a time of setup, provides environment setting information including the position information thereof. Each Ubicell core network element, upon receiving environment setting information of an arbitrary Ubicell base station, generates an environment construction information file of the arbitrary Ubicell base station, registers the arbitrary Ubicell base station, and sends the environment construction information file to the arbitrary Ubicell base station. The integrated management server identifies the Ubicell core network element in a corresponding position based on the environment setting information, provided from the Ubicell base station, and provides the environment setting information of the Ubicell base station to the Ubicell core network element.

  • Patent number: 7957352
Abstract: Various schemes for performing inter-system handoff, e.g., from a UTRAN to a cdma2000 radio access network (RAN) are described. For a MAHHO scheme, the UTRAN uses measurements obtained by a multi-RAT device to determine suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. The measurements are obtained by a candidate frequency search procedure, and the handover is accomplished by a handoff execution procedure. For a MDHHO scheme, the UTRAN relies on location information for the multi-RAT device to select suitable cdma2000 cell(s) for handover. For a CRHHO scheme, a new call is established on the cdma2000 RAN and the pending call on the UTRAN is released in a manner such that the handover appears seamless to the multi-RAT device. The multi-RAT device includes two modem processors that perform processing for the UTRAN and cdma2000 RAN and an application processor that controls the modem processors.

Abstract: A small base station may report to a network controller about whether a radio frequency (RF) signal transmitted from a macro base station is sensed. The network controller may control an operational mode of the small base station depending on whether the RF signal is sensed. Accordingly, the small base station may not transmit the RF signal at all times, and thus, it is possible to reduce an interference between a small cell and a macro cell or interference between the small cell and another small cell.
