Abstract: An adaptive scheme controls the transmission of interference management messages by wireless nodes. For example, the adaptive scheme may be used to determine whether and/or how to transmit resource utilization messages. Such a determination may be based on, for example, comparison of a quality of service threshold with a current quality of service level associated with received data. A quality of service threshold may be adapted based on the effect of previously transmitted resource utilization messages. A quality of service threshold for a given wireless node may be adapted based on the frequency at which the wireless node transmits resource utilization messages. A quality of service threshold for a given wireless node may be adapted based on information received from another wireless node. An adaptation scheme also may depend on the type of traffic received by a given wireless node. A quality of service threshold also may be adapted based on throughput information.

Abstract: In one exemplary embodiment a network node (such as a base station BS) determines that a plurality of user equipments UEs are available for use as mobile relays MRs, and selects a subset of the plurality of UEs and configures the subset of the plurality of UEs as MRs. In another exemplary embodiment, an indication is sent (for example from a UE) that a UE is willing to operate as a MR, a response is received that the UE is selected to be a MR1 and then periodically there is sent a beacon advertising that the UE is a MR. In this manner UEs are pre-configured in a cell as MRs, regardless of any specific UE need for relay services. Any UE later needing relay service listens for the beacon. The BS can limit which UEs it pre-configures as MRs to avoid closely spaced UEs being both active MRs. Locations need not be signaled.

  • Patent number: 8909157
Abstract: Technologies are generally described for alleviating inter-cell interference experienced by relays in wireless networks such as cellular systems that rely on relays to facilitate some communication between end user devices and base stations (BTSs). A BTS serving a relay may gather information on resource blocks being used to communicate between the relay and an end user. Then, the BTS may send interference indication signals such as High Interference Indicators (HII) or related signals on behalf of sub-communications executed by entities within the cell. Another BTS of a neighboring cell receiving the signals may avoid scheduling on those resource blocks, if possible, thereby relieving the relay link from potentially significant interference.

  • Patent number: 8908609
Abstract: A multi-hop wireless, for example cellular, communications system is provided comprising a source equipment which may be one of a base station or an end user terminal for transmitting signals towards a destination equipment which may be the other of a base station or an end user terminal via at least one relay equipment. The relay equipment receives a plurality of signals transmitted from one or more source equipments of the system and from this plurality of signals selects a signal to relay. In this way the decision about which relays are included in which communication paths in the system is distributed to the relay equipments of the system, thus reducing the signalling overhead as compared with link state protocols which are typically used for routing in such multi-hop systems.

Abstract: A dynamic spectrum arbitrage (DSA) system includes a home subscriber server (HSS), a mobility management entity (MME), an eNodeB, a dynamic spectrum controller (DSC), and a dynamic spectrum policy controller (DPC). The DSC may receive resource allocation information from the DPC, and send updated information and instructions to the HSS. The HSS may be configured to receive information from the DSC, detect changes to HSS subscription information (e.g., user profile information), determine whether the changes affect the information managed/stored by an MME component, and send the detected changes to the MME component when the HSS determines that the changes affect the information managed/stored by the MME. The MME component may use the information included in the received messages to add, remove, or modify the MME's stored subscription information or user profile information. The MME component may then communicate these updates, additions, or changes to the HSS component.

  • Patent number: 8903442
Abstract: A radio communication system (100) provides a radio air interface at a master node (102) for subscriber units associated with the master node. Among the subscriber units are several slave nodes (104, 106). The communication system has the ability to operate as a secondary user in unused spectrum portions of a frequency band otherwise reserved for primary operators. The master node accesses an authorization server (108) to obtain a list of unused channels in the region of the master node. Each slave node also contacts the authorization server to obtain a list of unused channels in the region where each respective slave node is located, via another network (118, 121). The unused channels common to the slave nodes and the master node are used to create a backup radio operating parameter list which is used by the master node if a fault occurs between the master node the authorization server.

  • Patent number: 8902866
Abstract: Wireless devices, e.g., in a cognitive radio network, discover and use locally available usable spectrum for communication. Beacon signaling facilitates available spectrum discovery, spectrum usage coordination, and device identification. A wireless terminal, which may have entered a new area and powered up, monitors to detect for the presence of beacon signals in a communications band. When the wireless terminal fails to detect a beacon, the wireless terminal assumes that the spectrum is available and transmits its user beacon signal thereby providing notification of its presence in the area to other wireless terminals. The wireless terminal maintains a coordinated timing relationship between its beacon transmit interval and beacon detect interval, which are performed on an ongoing basis. The combination of beacon TX interval and beacon monitoring interval represents a small fraction of total time, allowing for power conservation.

  • Patent number: RE45302
Abstract: A communications system network that enables secondary use of spectrum on a non-interference basis is disclosed. Each secondary transceiver measures the background spectrum. The system uses a modulation method to measure the background signals that eliminates self-generated interference and also identifies the secondary signal to all primary users via on/off amplitude modulation, allowing easy resolution of interference claims. The system uses high-processing gain probe waveforms that enable propagation measurements to be made with minimal interference to the primary users. The system measures background signals and identifies the types of nearby receivers and modifies the local frequency assignments to minimize interference caused by a secondary system due to non-linear mixing interference and interference caused by out-of-band transmitted signals (phase noise, harmonics, and spurs).
