  • Patent number: 8977260
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods that prevent clone devices from registering with a wireless communication network. In a particular embodiment, a wireless device exchanges communications with a wireless communication network during an initial period of time. The wireless device transfers an initial location of the wireless device during the initial period of time to an authorization system for the wireless communication network. During a second period of time, the wireless device transfers a registration request indicating a confirmation location and a location of the wireless device during the second period of time to the authorization system. The authorization system processes the registration request to validate the confirmation location based on the initial location. If the confirmation location is validated based on the initial location, then the authorization system allows the wireless device to access the wireless communication network during the second period of time.

  • Patent number: 8971919
Abstract: A method for generating a two-dimensional radio coverage map comprising a plurality of physical levels including a first physical level and a second physical level. The access point is located above the second physical level. A first radio coverage map comprising original points located at a first distance from the access point is generated. Each of the original points has a first predicted value. A distance is selected to place the two-dimensional radio coverage map at the target distance from the access point. Coordinates of map points of the two-dimensional radio coverage map are generated. Each of the map points corresponds to one of the original points. An offset value representing an attenuation due to the target distance being different than the first distance is computed. For each of the map points, a predicted received signal strength value is generated by adding the offset value to the first predicted value of the corresponding one of the original points.

Abstract: In one embodiment, in response to a user application request to determine a location of a user-device having a Wi-Fi radio, the Wi-Fi radio is triggered to transmit a request to Wi-Fi access points within range. Messages are received from the Wi-Fi access points, each message identifying the Wi-Fi access point sending the message. Signal strength of the messages received from the Wi-Fi access points is calculated. A reference database of stored locations for Wi-Fi access points in a target area is accessed to obtain the stored locations for the identified Wi-Fi access points. Based on the number of the identified Wi-Fi access points identified via received messages, a corresponding location-determination algorithm is chosen from a plurality of location-determination algorithms. Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus that associates a location where a terminal uses communication or travel route in use of the communication, with a connection destination of the terminal. The apparatus includes a communication log analyzer that aggregates communication logs collected by network apparatuses that constitute the mobile network and analyzes it. The communication log analyzer estimates travel route of the terminal connected the network using: log information generated by a base station to be connected to the terminal at the time of starting the connection, log information generated by a base station to be connected to the terminal at the time of a handover of the connection, and log information generated by a base station connected to the terminal at the time of detaching the connection.

  • Patent number: 8938252
Abstract: A system and method modifies calibration data used to geo-locate a mobile station. Calibration data measured via a calibration data collection device may contain errors due to the physical limitations of the collection device and/or the collection process. Any data collection device may produce some degree of signal degradation or drop-out. Dead reckoning provides a remedy for signal drop-out, however, it often produces data results that may be unsatisfactory to perform an accurate location estimate. To ensure the integrity of the collected calibration data, a data modification and/or data replacement algorithm may be implemented to enhance the accuracy of the collected data. In addition, current collection procedures used to generate a calibration database may be laborious, time-consuming and expensive. Simplifying the test and measurement equipment needed, and the procedures for obtaining calibration data may save time and expenses.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided that enable a method for providing location information to be selected based upon a determination, such as a minimization, of the consumption of location server resources that will be consumed by the method. The method, apparatus and computer program product may determine a selected location method from a set of location methods based on predetermined selection criteria. Specifically, the selected location method may be selected to meet a location accuracy requirement specified in a request for location information while consuming a determinable, such as a minimum, amount of resources. The predetermined selection criteria may be updated over time such that method, apparatus and computer program product are self-learning.

  • Patent number: 8938254
Abstract: There is provided a method in a cellular telecommunications network, the cellular telecommunications network comprising at least a first cell and a second cell. The method comprises the steps of transmitting (302) first periodic physical signals, usable by a device to determine its location, to the first cell; and transmitting (304) second periodic physical signals, usable by a device to determine its location, to the second cell. The second periodic physical signals are synchronized with the first periodic physical signals and have a timing offset, such that the first periodic physical signals and the second periodic physical signals are not transmitted simultaneously. The method is characterized in that transmission of data or control signals to the first cell is inhibited when the second periodic physical signals are transmitted to the second cell.

Abstract: An unintentional dialing event is detected by characterizing some action of a portable phone, e.g., its movement or its surroundings. The action can be characterized by a sensor, and that sensor can be for example an accelerometer, a camera in the phone, or a microphone in the phone, or some other way. The movement can be characterized to see if it is synchronous with entries on the keyboard, which would likely represent the unintentional dialing event or “but dialing”. The environment can also be characterized other ways, for example by using a microphone in the phone to text sound profiles or to detect sounds in sync with the entries, or can be characterized using a camera in the phone to detect a light profile.
