  • Patent number: 6512752
Abstract: A system and method of assigning frequencies from a reuse group according to service type and subscriber location in a wireless communications network utilizing multiple reuse frequency groups for the assignment of transmission channels. Initially, a mobile station requests a transmission channel. A network element then receives the request and determines the data rate requirements of the mobile station for the level of service provided by the network to the mobile station. Concurrently, the signal strength from the mobile station to a serving base station subsystem is measured. The network element then assigns a frequency to the mobile station which belongs to a reuse frequency group that supports the data rate requirements at the signal strength measured.

  • Publication number: 20030013471
Abstract: The method provides talk around in the communication system by sending a talk around request from one of the subscriber units 101-108 to the base unit 100. At the subscriber unit a RSSI (received signal strength indication) of a signal received from the base unit is determined and sent back to the base unit 100. In the base unit 100 the RSSI is compared to a predetermined window. If the RSSI is above the window, the request from the subscriber unit is denied. If the RSSI is within the window, a frequency channel and power level are assigned to the subscriber unit, the subscriber unit thereby going into talk around mode. If the RSSI is below the window, the subscriber unit does not respond and the subscriber unit goes into a direct communication mode independent of the communication system.

  • Publication number: 20020151318
Abstract: An apparatus and method for assessing the signal strength, quality and sources of interference in a wireless network. A drive test is performed using a receiving scanner in a geographic area that contains a plurality of base stations within a carrier's wireless network. The receiver and companion logic measure, analyze and record synchronization channels across all the frequencies used by the local base station. Signal quality is computed and expressed in the form of RxQual. Multiple readings are taken in a brief time period (˜480 msec) thus an average, representative quality is assessed. Signal fading, degradation, and interference are calculated using corelative techniques, for each used frequency. If the signal quality level is insufficient, then a scan for adjacent channel and co-channel interference is done. The data and analyses are used by the carrier to fine tune the wireless network system.

Abstract: A position location communication system determines the position of a mobile master radio using a round-trip messaging scheme in which the time of arrive (TOA) of ranging signals is accurately determined to yield the range estimates required to calculate the position of the mobile radio. The master radio transmits ranging signals to plural reference radios which respond by transmitting reply ranging signals. Upon reception of the reply ranging signal, the master radio determines the range to the reference radio from the signal propagation time. Any combination of fixed or mobile radios having known positions can be used as the reference radios for another mobile radio in the system. Individual radios do not need to be synchronized to a common time reference, thereby eliminating the need for highly accurate system clocks. Errors in TOA estimates are minimized by performing internal delay calibration, Doppler compensation, leading-edge-of-the-signal curve fitting and frequency diversity techniques.

Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for making multiple frequency reallocation decisions, which can be based on a single set of radio channel measurements. A consideration area (CA) is defined for each cell in a set of cells being optimized for a frequency plan. For example, a CA for a cell can be defined in terms of a distance between cells, radio attenuation between cells, and/or a handover order for neighboring cells (e.g., all 2nd order or neighbors' neighboring cells). For the preferred embodiment, a frequency or channel reallocation made in a cell may not be detected outside of that particular cell's CA. As such, the frequency plan can be optimized by determining all reallocations whereby local allocation-beneficial suggestions are found. For example, if a cell's CA is defined as its 1st order neighbors, these beneficial suggestions can be consistency determinations (e.g., set of rules) that apply to that cell and its contiguous (1st order) neighbors.

Abstract: In an ad-hoc radio communication system comprising a plurality of stations (100) formed into at least one network (102a,102b), each station (100) is assigned a rank representative of its suitability for performing the role of master station in a network (102a). The rank may for example be assessed depending on the performance of the station's antenna (204) or its access to mains power. It is arranged that the station (100) having the highest rank in a network (102a,102b) performs the role of master for that network, thereby improving the efficiency of communication in the network.

  • Patent number: 6240275
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for assigning channels based upon interference and channel quality measurements. The interference level measurements are carried out on the uplink of the cellular network. Channels are categorized in accordance with interference bands depending upon the interference levels. Incoming service is pre-assigned to a channel in the highest available interference band and a channel quality measurement (CQM) is conducted. The service is either continued (assigned) on the same channel, reassigned to a channel with lower interference or dropped if no other channel with lower interference is available based upon the channel quality measurement and the interference bands having available channels.

  • Patent number: 6230022
Abstract: In a transmitting method, it is possible to avoid influences of adjacent-channel interference to perform communication satisfactorily. In the case of performing transmission with a previously set sending power, the transmission is performed with the set sending power with respect to a channel having the largest sending power. With respect to a channel having the next largest sending power, if its adjacent channel is the determined channel, the transmission is performed such that the sending power is corrected on the basis of the sending power of the determined channel. Thereby, it is possible to prevent the signal-to-interference wave power ratio C/I of the channel from deteriorating due to the leakage signal (interference wave) from the adjacent channel. Thus, it is possible to avoid the influences of adjacent-channel interference to thereby perform communication satisfactorily.

  • Patent number: 6223041
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, radio resources are dynamically assigned among a plurality of intercoupled base stations based upon historical loading to reduce both localized and system interference. A plurality of loading intervals are first determined that span a loading interval sequence. The loading intervals may correspond to time based periods such as fifteen-minute, thirty-minute, hour or other time intervals. The loading interval sequence may correspond to a weekday, a weekend day or such other loading period within which loading resembles a pattern. Based upon estimated loading for the loading interval, a number of channels required to service load for the loading interval are made to meet a minimal service level is determined. An initial assignment of channels among the cells/sectors of the base stations of the wireless communication system is then made to satisfy localized radio interference criteria. Such an assignment will typically be made to preclude local reuse of channels.

  • Patent number: 6212396
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling communications between a base and a handset capable of communicating with each other on at least one communication channel within a channel set. The method involves transmitting a new channel message including a preferred channel identifier from the base to the handset, on different channels of the channel set until an acknowledgement signal is received from the handset. In response to the acknowledgement signal, the preferred channel identifier is stored in a base working channel transmit buffer. Further communications between the base and the handset are conducted on a communications channel identified by the preferred channel identifier.

Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, facilitates service degradation in a radio communication system, such as a cellular communication system. A service degradation profile is created and includes values of QoS (quality of service) level values. If communication at levels corresponding to the values of the desired QoS level parameters is unavailable, efforts are made to effectuate, or maintain communication at quality levels corresponding to values of at least first QoS level parameters values. Service degradation thereby occurs pursuant to a selected profile, reducing the need for service renegotiations and reducing the possibility that an abrupt termination of a communication session might occur.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing power consumption in a roaming portable communication device is described. Various embodiments include optimizing a channel acquisition scan, or pre-scan, and a background scan in order to delay the reaction to a suspected loss of coverage to prevent unnecessary roaming and the associated power consumption. A list of received signal strengths is generated for a number of possible channels. Only those channels with a received signal strength above a threshold level are retained. The received signal strength of the remaining possible channels is retested. The selected channel is determined from the remaining possible channels by comparing the received signal strength of the last channel used, the last channel attempted (if available), and a best channel having the highest received signal strength.
