Talk Group Forming (e.g., Dynamic Regrouping, Talk Group Assignment) Patents (Class 455/519)
  • Patent number: 8180358
Abstract: An apparatus and method for establishing a session in a communication network supporting multimedia group calls. A first step (202) includes determining streams for a multimedia group call by the service entity. A next step (204) includes providing an indicator of the resources required for at least one stream of the group call by the service entity. A next step (206) includes paging the subscriber unit with the indicator for the at least one stream of the group call by the service entity. A next step (208) includes ascertaining the capabilities and resources of the subscriber unit. A next step (210) includes establishing a channel for only those streams of the group call for which the capabilities and resources of the subscriber unit are sufficient with respect to the indicator for those streams.

  • Patent number: 8175628
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing latency when setting up a Push-to-Talk (PTT) session from a User Equipment (UE) in a WCDMA radio communication network. When a user opens a PTT application or accesses the contacts page, the UE obtains a radio bearer from the network. The UE may maintain the radio bearer until the session is requested by transmitting periodic Heartbeat messages to the network. The Heartbeat messages have a length sufficient to trigger the network to place the user terminal on a Dedicated Channel (DCH), and the time period between Heartbeat messages is short enough to prevent the UE from being removed from the DCH for inactivity. When the user presses the PTT button, a SIP INVITE message is immediately sent without delay.

Abstract: A half-duplex communication system is embodied in a push-to-talk cellular system such as a GPRS system. The system includes two or more terminals (1 A, 1 B, 1 C) one or more of which can operate in a hands-free mode. When in hands-free mode, a terminal (1 A) is offered the right-to-speak by a controller (11 A, 13 A, 15 A, 17 A) within the system without the need for a talk request from a user. This allows a hands-free user to participate safely in a communications session.

  • Patent number: 8155591
Abstract: A user information management unit of a terminal generates a management number for respective users. A terminal to terminal communication unit communicates with another terminal through ad hoc communication, acquires a unique user ID set for the other user, and stores the user ID in a friend information storing unit. The data generated in a data generation unit is transmitted to a server from a sending unit along with a destination user ID selected from user IDs stored in a friend information storing unit. A reception unit in the server stores the transmitted data in a data storing unit for each destination user ID. When the server receives a connection request from a terminal, a connecting user information acquisition unit in the server identifies a user ID of a connection origin and a data retrieving unit transmits the data to the terminal by retrieving a data storing unit based on the user ID, indicating the user requested for the connection as a destination.

Each node may also broadcast information identifying its frequency-hopping pattern to other nodes, such as any neighboring nodes. Each node may further receive information identifying the frequency-hopping patterns of any neighboring nodes. The nodes may then operate in a non-synchronized manner and use the frequency-hopping patterns of neighboring nodes to communicate. For example, each node may use the identified frequency-hopping pattern of a neighboring node to synchronize with and communicate data to the neighboring node. In this way, the nodes need not maintain synchronization at all times during operation. Also, different nodes may use different frequency channels at the same time, helping to increase the bandwidth available for wireless communications.

Abstract: A method an system for establishing a multi-user communication session, having a session description, between terminals with incompatible media characteristics, in which users with terminals having incompatible media characteristics are invited to participate in the communication session. A transcoding session is set up for enabling transcoding between the incompatible media characteristics of the terminals based on information about the terminals of the users having accepted the invitation, this information comprising the media characteristics of the users' terminals. The session description is established according to the transcoding session and, during the communication session, media streams from the terminal of one user are transcoded according to the transcoding session and the transcoded media streams are transmitted according to the session description to the other users participating in the communication session, using the media characteristics of the terminals of those other users.

Abstract: Aspects of mobile communication for establishing a receive-only group communication, such as a Push-to-Talk (PTT) call or multicast call with a plurality of wireless communication devices that are in a receive-only mode are disclosed. When a group call between wireless communication devices starts from an originating device, in one embodiment indicating a receive-only group with which a group call is to be established, one or more receive-only wireless communication devices are determined and invited to participate in the group call. The traffic channel to the receive-only wireless communication device is transitioned to a uni-directional, forward-only traffic channel such that media is provided from the originating wireless communication device to the receive-only wireless communication device via the uni-directional traffic channel.

Abstract: A communication device and method are presented. The device is in a network of devices of different groups. The device contains a push-to-talk (PTT) button, a channel selector, and a keyboard containing hard or soft keys. The channel selector selects an initial frequency at which to receive and transmit, dependent on the group to which the device belongs. The device transmits when the PTT button is pressed. If a multiple PTT function is activated by software in the device, at least some of the keys are used to select a new transmission frequency. The device receives at the initial frequency independent of the transmission frequency. The multiple PTT function can be activated by a dedicated soft or hard key or a key on the keyboard that serves multiple functions. The frequency selection provided by the keys is dependent on the channel and the device group.

  • Patent number: 8099121
Abstract: One illustrative technique is performed in a requesting terminal of a plurality of terminals of a communication group for a communication session delivered via a network. Each terminal has communication capabilities within the communication group, such that a currently-transmitting terminal in the communication group is given a transmit capability using a talk channel while all other terminals of the communication group have a receive capability. The requesting terminal, which is not the currently-transmitting terminal, receives a user input for selecting a responding terminal of the communication group for responding in the communication session. The requesting terminal then transmits, while the transmit capability is given to the currently-transmitting terminal, a request for the network to grant the responding terminal the transmit capability. The request includes an identification of the responding terminal.

Abstract: System and method for efficiently managing communication channel assignments within talkgroups having dual mode communication units capable of operating on a first communication channel type and on a second communication channel type, and single mode communication units capable of operating only on the second communication channel type. If, at a base site, each of the communication units associated with a talkgroup is a dual mode communication unit, a call for that talkgroup is assigned to be broadcast using a channel of the first communication channel type. If, at least one of the communication units associated with the talkgroup at the base site is a single mode communication unit, the call for that talkgroup is assigned to a channel of the second communication channel type. As communication units roam between sites, channel assignments are continuously updated based on the types of communication units at each base site at any one time.

Abstract: A system to permit push-to-talk communications in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) communication network. Individual wireless communication devices that are part of a Group Call are assigned the same set or sets of OFDM tones for a downlink timeslot. Because each wireless communication device receives the same set of tones, each device will receive a communication simultaneously. The assigned OFDM tones need not be contiguous within a block of available tones. Because a large number of OFDM tones are available, the concept may be extended to a large number of groups that each separately support a Group Call function.

  • Patent number: 8094638
Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention uses estimates of delay spreads of transmissions from user equipments (UEs) to a NodeB to determine a set of transmission parameters for the UEs reference signals. In an exemplary embodiment, the transmission parameters for reference signals include cyclic shifts. Thus, embodiments include a set of allocated cyclic shift values that are tailored to the delay spreads. The set of allocated cyclic shift values are used by a corresponding set of UE being served by a NodeB to form references signals. Each UE uses the allocated cyclic shift to form its reference signal by applying the cyclic shift to a modified reference sequence. The modified reference sequence can be generated from a Constant-Amplitude-Zero-Auto Correlation (CAZAC) sequence. The set of allocated cyclic shift values can be updated periodically to account for changes of delay spreads, which can be caused by physical movements of the set of UEs.
