Patent number: 7844292Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for in-band control signaling using bandwidth distributed encoding to send modulated control carrier signals with analog voice signals in the same voice frequency band. A transmitting device generates control carrier signals spread over a voice frequency band, combines them with analog voice signals in the voice frequency band, and transmits the combined signals over a communication channel. The transmitting device can use a control signal encoder to apply a pseudo-random code to the control carrier signal in order to spread it over a voice frequency band. As such, control signals are sent as in-band signals without significantly degrading the voice signals. A receiving device receives the combined signals within the voice frequency band. The receiving device demodulates the combined signal and uses matching pseudo-random codes to determine if a control signal has been sent. The receiving device also reproduces the voice signals themselves.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 2007Date of Patent: November 30, 2010Inventor: Kenneth H. Shamburger

Patent number: 7844293Abstract: Provided are a system for establishing and managing a Push To Talk (PTT) over Cellular (PoC) session between PoC clients supporting various media types, a method thereof, and a User Equipment (UE) therefor. When a PoC client performing an Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) PoC multimedia call service supports a plurality of media types, and media types supported by PoC clients are not common, a PoC session can be established to support only media types set to be transmitted in a first response message after the session is established. In addition, a method of efficiently managing a session by updating the session when a newly supported media type is provided or when a recipient of an existing media type is changed is suggested.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2007Date of Patent: November 30, 2010Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., LtdInventors: Sang-Kyung Sung, Ji-Hye Lee, Sung-Jin Park

Patent number: 7840192Abstract: A method, system, and user device are provided for provisioned talkgroup identifier discovery in a dispatch or similar network, in which a user is provided with a list of talkgroups provisioned for the user device. In some embodiments a new request message sent from the user device is implemented to effect a response from the network providing the information. In other embodiments the provision of the information is provided by a new message automatically sent from the network to the user device at a specific time. In yet other embodiments, the user device attempts to join every group to test which groups are provisioned for it.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2004Date of Patent: November 23, 2010Assignee: Research in Motion LimitedInventors: Padakandla Krishna Rao, Sing Janus Yau

Patent number: 7835759Abstract: Instant messaging clients transmit, to a server, presence information indicating that the respective client is in a communicative state in which the client is receptive to communicating with the other clients. A server determines, for each client, that the respective client is in a communicative state if presence information was received from the client over a preceding predetermined time period, and that the client is in an unknown state if presence information was not received from the client over the preceding predetermined time period. The communicative state and the unknown state are possible presence states of the clients. The server transmits a notification to a second client of the presence state of a first client when both the first client and the second client are in a communicative state. But the server refrains from transmitting the notification to the second client when the first client is in the unknown state.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2008Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Research In Motion LimitedInventors: Matthew Bells, David M. Patent number: 7835346Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for establishing transcoding free connections between UMA and UMTS call legs are disclosed. According to one method, a media gateway determines whether codec configurations used by UMA and UMTS legs of a call are compatible. In response to determining that the configurations are compatible, media gateway determines whether rate control is necessary to establish a transcoding free connection. In response to determining that rate control is necessary, the media gateway issues rate control requests on the UMA and UMTS legs as appropriate. The media gateway determines whether the rate control requests are successful. In response to determining that the requests are successful, the media gateway establishes a transcoding free connection between the UMA and the UMTS legs of the call.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2006Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Genband US LLCInventors: Yong He, Weijun Lee, Mansong Shen
