  • Patent number: 10306697
Abstract: An apparatus, computer program, and method are provided for utilizing a particular radio access technology to connect to a telecommunication network before an expiration of a timer. A wireless communication device is provided including at least one hardware processor configured for sending a first request from the wireless communication device for connecting to a telecommunication network via a first base station for a first area. Such first base station implements a first radio access technology that has a first priority and a first data rate. In response to detecting a failure of the first request, a second radio access technology is utilized to connect to the telecommunication network before an expiration of a timer. Such second radio access technology has a second priority that is lower than the first priority and a second data rate that is lower than the first data rate.

Abstract: A method for detecting the proximity of a signal source using wireless systems is contemplated in which a wireless mobile device wirelessly receives packets from a signal source and determines a received signal strength for each packet. The wireless mobile device may store information based upon the received signal strength for each packet, and calculate from the information stored for all the packets, a current path loss value corresponding to a current distance from the wireless mobile device to the signal source. The wireless mobile device may then determine whether the current distance is sufficient to be an enabling condition such as tap, for example, for a data transfer or a transaction between the wireless mobile device and the signal source.

Abstract: AP's associated with a communication network and any wireless devices desiring contact, operated according to a protocol in which each wireless device selects AP's with which to communicate. A system coordinator causes the AP's to operate so as to guide each wireless device to an AP selected by the system coordinator. This has the effect that, notwithstanding that the protocol involves having the wireless device make the selection of AP, functionally, the AP's make the selection for it. In a 1st technique, multiple AP's share an identifier, with the system coordinator directing one particular AP to respond to the wireless device, thus appearing to wireless devices as a “personal cell”. In a 2nd technique, AP's each maintain identifiers substantially unique to each wireless device, with the system coordinator directing only one particular AP to maintain any particular wireless device's identifier, thus appearing to wireless devices as a “personal AP”.

Abstract: A mobile phone initially probes while in an open-loop mode with an estimated power level based on the received power level from a base station. If a response is not received, power is incremented, and a subsequent probe is sent. The process is repeated until a response is received or when maximum power is reached. If a response is still not received, the mobile phone tests for changing its location state. When BTS probes are unsuccessful and maximum power is reached, available sensors are sampled and tested for a change of state, e.g., by way of an inclinometer, an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a GPS, standard 802.11, or employing a Bluetooth, and the like. If no state change is detected, a delay block is entered, reducing the probing rate and the power consumption rate. If a state change is detected, the delay block is bypassed and probing resumes immediately.

Abstract: Provided is a method for exchanging messages only between the users in a predetermined range around the current position, without intentionally grouping the users. A message server stores a message table where a message is associated with each set of addresses of a plurality of access points. A portable terminal searches for access points near the portable terminal and receives annunciation signal including the address of the access point from each access point. The portable terminal transmits, to a message server, a message acquisition request including, as a query, the set of the addresses included in the annunciation signals. The message server compares the set of the addresses as the query with a plurality of sets of addresses recorded in the message table, extracts messages corresponding to the sets of the addresses ranking high arranged in descending order of similarity, and transmits the messages to the portable terminal.

  • Patent number: 9763187
Abstract: In any cellular communication the network transmits broadcast information with some periodicity which is defined by the network parameters. The client terminal must acquire this system information in order to access the services from the network. The time required by the client terminal to acquire all the necessary system information to initiate network access may depend on the scheduling of the system information broadcast by the network. In some cases the scheduling information about the system information may be described in another system information message whose schedule may be fixed or known a priori. Conventional method of decoding the complete system information may involve decoding attempt for all the possible instances of transmission of the system information. A method and apparatus are disclosed that enables acquisition of the system information based on stored known instances of system information transmission. This results in reduced power consumption at the client terminal.
