Separate Coupling Device Movable Radially Of Axes Of Torque Transmitting Members To Accommodate Parallel, Misaligned Axes (e.g., Oldham Coupling) Patents (Class 464/102)
  • Patent number: 5149255
Abstract: A gearing system includes a pair of gear support plates (5,10) arranged to rotate about parallel but offset axes (9,14) with the plates extending parallel to each other in parallel radially extending planes. Each plate includes axially extending teeth (40,45) having concave (43,45) and convex opposed surfaces. The teeth are interdigitated axially such that various pairs of interdigitated teeth will be in cooperating surface contact. Rotation of each support plate about its own axis causes the teeth to orbit relative to each other and engage in a driving relationship in a smooth manner, with the convex portion of certain teeth engaging smoothly with the concave portion of adjacent teeth. In one embodiment, the gear teeth take the form of section of lune shaped elements. In another embodiment, the gear teeth take the form of truncated involutes. In still a further embodiment, the teeth are constituted by multi-faceted polygons.

Abstract: A scroll-type compressor having a unique coupling arrangement for driving the movable scroll is provided. The side of the base portion of the movable scroll opposite the spirals has a plurality of recesses disposed in a circular pattern. A support plate having a plurality of complementary recesses therein is positioned such that its recesses face the recesses in the movable plate. The diameters of the first and second recesses are different from one another. Coupling members are disposed between each facing pair of recesses. The coupling member has small and large diameter portions. The small diameter portion extends into its associated smaller recess while the large diameter portion extends into its larger associated recess. With this arrangement, the required width of the recess bearing portion of the support plate may be reduced relative to conventional designs which has several advantages.

Abstract: A gerotor pump is disclosed of the fixed-axis type, including an outer rotor (33) and an inner rotor (35). The gerotor is driven by a drive shaft (25) through a driver (51) including a pair of drive members (57), each having a cylindrical drive surface (59). The inner rotor (35) defines a pair of diametrically opposed recesses (61), each including a driven surface (63). With the drive members engaging the driven surfaces, the inner rotor is permitted to deviate from perfect concentricity with the drive shaft to the extent necessary to result in minimum torque input to drive the rotors, without binding occurring between the rotors, as typically occurs if the inner rotor is forced to remain concentric with the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 4470384
Abstract: A drive train for the distributor of a spark ignition internal combustion engine includes an engine camshaft having a hollow, a distributor shaft essentially parallel to the engine camshaft, and a coupling body disposed in the hollow of the engine camshaft. The coupling body is connected to the engine camshaft in such a manner that the coupling body will rotate along with the engine camshaft and can move relative to the engine camshaft in a radial direction. The coupling body is also connected to the distributor shaft in such a manner that the coupling body will rotate along with the distributor shaft and can move relative to the distributor shaft in a radial direction perpendicular to the direction of the radial movement of the coupling body relative to the engine camshaft. This connection of the distributor shaft to the engine camshaft causes them to rotate together and compensates for mis-alignment between the axes thereof.

  • Patent number: 4452592
Abstract: A hybrid straight and curved guide phase change coupling device in which end members rotatable on spaced parallel axes in opposed spaced relation are connected by an intermediate member having guide means constraining lateral motion of the intermediate member to a straight diametrical path with respect to one of the end members and to a curved path with respect to the other of the end members whereby a cyclic phase change or velocity ratio variation is provided during rotation of the two end members at identical overall cyclic speeds.

  • Patent number: 4406600
Abstract: A scroll-type of fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet port. A fixed scroll member is fixedly disposed with respect to the housing and has an end surface from which a first wrap extends. An orbiting scroll member is movably disposed within the housing and has an end plate from which a second wrap extends. The first and second wraps interfit at an angular offset to make a plurality of line contacts which define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. A drive mechanism is connected to the orbiting scroll member to transmit orbital motion thereto. A rotation preventing means prevents rotation of orbiting scroll member during orbital motion of the orbiting scroll member and is comprised of fixed ring and a sliding ring. The sliding ring is slidably connected to the fixed ring and also to the second end plate by keys and keyways.

  • Patent number: 4332148
Abstract: A cyclic phase-change coupling in which opposed ends of two members rotatable on parallel offset axes are connected by an intermediate member through guide means which restrict lateral motion of the intermediate member with respect to both other members to separate arcuate paths, the axial projections of which intersect within the lateral boundaries of the intermediate member. In a preferred form, the arrangement comprises a curved key and groove variation of a standard Oldham shaft coupling that provides a cyclic phase change between the offset shafts rather than the fixed phase rotation of the Oldham construction.
