  • Patent number: 4984776
Abstract: An end attachment assembly for a twisted rope torsion bar includes an anchor nut and an internal elastomeric bushing cooperatively mating with the nut. The elastomeric bushing is molded onto the end of the twisted rope torsion bar. The torsion bar is fabricated of a lightweight glass fiber/epoxy composite material. The elastomeric bushing has external splines cooperating and mating with splines on the inner bore of the anchor nut. The end attachment assembly compresses the end of the twisted rope torsion bar to reduce stress concentration and prevent separation, i.e. the application of torque to the anchor nut transmits a like amount of torque to the elastomeric bushing to compress and more firmly grip the twisted rope torsion bar. The elastomeric bushing is compressed radially inwardly by the cam shape of the mating splines. Advantageously, the elastomeric bushing proportionally increases the grip on the end of the torsion bar so that the joint is made tighter and tighter under increased torque.

  • Patent number: 4976655
Abstract: A connecting rod assembly used in downhole drilling that has an articulated coupling secured to each end of a rigid connecting rod. This assembly connects via the articulated couplings, to axially misaligned shafts and transfers both rotational and axial forces between them. The rigidity of the connecting rod prevents it from flexing during this force transfer, thereby reducing transmission loss while increasing transmission capabilities. Each articulated coupling comprises lobed male and female members, spaced slightly apart from each other, that allow for the transfer of these forces between them. With such an arrangement, rotational and axially forces can be transferred to a drill or other bearing section from a rotating and gyrating downhole motor.

  • Patent number: 4395247
Abstract: A coupling between a hub (10) and a shaft (11) has first and second splines (512,513; 530,531) connecting the hub to the shaft. The first splines extend axially and are straight while the second splines are helical. A nut (521) on the shaft urges the hub axially toward a shoulder (527) on the shaft. The first and second splines, being of different helix angles, co-operate to urge the spline faces circumferentially into engagement to take up any clearance therebetween. The different helix angles also have the effect of limiting axial movement of the hub under the nut load. On application of the nut at an initial moderate torque the hub takes up an initial axial position. On further, more powerful, application of the nut, the hub is urged axially against the shoulder (527) which provides a final limit to movement of the hub thereby to avoid undue circumferential stress in the splines.
