  • Patent number: 4993997
Abstract: A two axis drive lugged belt and lugged pulley drive system driving a driven member independently in two, mutually perpendicular areas with the drive in each direction operational alone or simultaneously for vector movement of the driven member. Both X-Y axis are directly belt-driven by respective motors and with the axis considered "Y" the primary hysteresis minimizing drive is directed primarily to the lugged belt of substantial length in the "Y" axis. This is with the "Y" drive lugged belt routed around six pulleys to move the "X" axis carriage mounting and guide structure, with the belt attached at two points, at opposite sides of one end of the "X" axis carriage mounting and guide structure. The drive motor for the "Y" drive lugged belt is directly coupled to one of the six pulleys that is gear meshed to another of the six pulleys assuring precise synchronous counter-rotation of the paired set of pulleys at one corner of the "Y" drive.

  • Patent number: 4986796
Abstract: An autotensioner for controlling the tension of a belt. It is filled with a hydraulic oil containing poly-.alpha.-olefin as a basic ingredient. Since such an oil has excellent viscosity-temperature properties as well as good lubricating properties, a body and a piston slidably mounted in the body are abraded less at their sliding surface than with a prior art autotensioner and thus the size of an oil leakage gap formed therebetween is less subject to change. This will prevent cavitation in a pressure chamber formed in the body.

  • Patent number: 4984386
Abstract: The invention concerns a tensioning device for the cable of a cable window lifter which is mounted in a drive bracket pulled up and down along a guide rail by means of a cable wound around an actuation drum. One cable end is solidly joined to the drive bracket whereas the other cable end is connected by a directional lock to the drive bracket. This directional lock compensates any cable elongation taking place within the cable actuation system by means of spring action. The tensioning device of the invention is characterized by providing further compensating means. This further compensation is needed in the event of excessive stresses exerted on the cable actuation system in the closed window position which results in a spurious cable elongation caused thereby. It also eliminates this compensation when this excess stress is no longer present.

  • Patent number: 4976658
Abstract: A transmission wheel (12) is shiftable in position radially relative to a driven member such as a bicycle wheel. A driving force is imposed to the transmission wheel (12). This driving force rotates the transmission wheel (12) and the rotational force is transmitted by drive spokes (106) from the transmission wheel (12) to a hub portion of a driven member. The radial adjustment of the transmission wheel (12) relative to the driven member changes the length of a torque arm (106, 130) which in turn changes the drive speed of the driven member. The torque arm length is the radial distance between the rotational axis (40) of the driven member and the location of drive force application onto the transmission wheel (12).

  • Patent number: 4946426
Abstract: A self adjusting tensioning system for a variable transmission. An endless belt is advanced by and supported on a pair of spaced apart, variable diameter, sheaves which are independently movable between reduced and enlarged configurations and which result in the belt assuming different paths. A pair of rollers are rotatably mounted at fixedly spaced locations on an enlongated carrier member. One of the rollers is actively biased into engagement with the belt by a compression spring assembly. A cam surface on the carrier member proximate the other of the rollers is slidable along a fixed contoured supporting surface and passively assures engagement of the other of the rollers with the belt. As the ratio of the transmission changes with changed diameters of the sheaves and the belt thereby assumes a changed path, the belt is effective to automatically move the rollers therealong so as to maintain a substantially constant tension in the belt.

  • Patent number: 4684357
Abstract: This specification discloses apparatus for locking and retracting the timing chain(s) or belt of overhead cam internal combustion engines. The apparatus consists of essentially two components; an adjustable Retractor and a spring loaded Lock. During maintenance and/or overhaul of the engine and following removal of the Rocker Arm Cover(s), the Lock is compressed and installed between the two sides of the timing chain and seated on top of the crank sprocket. Upon release, the spring of the Lock forces the two sides of the lock to expand and lock the timing chain into position around the crank timing chain sprocket and prevents the engine mounted timing chain tensioner piston from jumping out of detent and falling into the engine oil pan. Utilization of the Lock in the foregoing manner allows for the removal of the engine head which contains the overhead cam and upper timing sprocket without necessitating the removal of the engine front cover, fan, and oil pan.

  • Patent number: 4678454
Abstract: An inertia controlled loading system for an exercise apparatus or the like. The system includes a rotatable member mounted on a frame together with a mechanism for rotating the rotatable member through a drive pulley operatively associated with the rotating mechanism and a driven pulley operatively associated with the rotatable member. It also includes an endless belt member drivingly interconnecting the pulleys such that the belt member imparts rotation of the rotating mechanism to the rotatable member through the drive and driven pulleys which occurs because of the fact that the belt member has a surface in driving engagement with the pulleys. The system further includes a non-rotating frictional surface member in engagement with the belt member intermediate the drive and driven pulleys. With this construction, the inertia controlled loading system is suitable for an exercise apparatus or the like.

Abstract: A tensioning device (10) for a flexible drive element (16), the tensioning device comprising a first tensioning member (40) shaped to form a channel (52) having a first contact surface (58), and a second tensioning member (140) shaped to form a channel (152) having a second contact surface (158). Straps (34, 36) and engagement means (42, 44, 142, 144) secure the first and second tensioning members a selected distance away from one another by means of a ratchet-like mechanism arranged such that the force required to move the tensioning members toward one another is smaller than the force required to move the tensioning members away from one another. The tensioning device may be operated without any means securing the tensioning device with respect to the sprockets. Grooves (60, 160) are provided in the respective channels to maintain the sides of the flexible drive element out of contact with the channel sides.
