Plural Grooves Formed In Unitary Member Patents (Class 474/170)
  • Patent number: 4767387
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a poly-V pulley includes a process for slitting and compressing the peripheral edge portion of an essentially flat blank for forming a widened and thickened flange wall. A series of relatively narrow, deep, V-shaped grooves are cold rolled. The poly-V pulley thus produced has the flange wall with poly-V grooves, from the intermediate portion of which a web extends radially inward. This structure provides good dynamic balance of rotation for the pulley and thus prolongs the life not only of the pulleys per se but also the belt to be put around the pulley. Further, the manufacturing method allows the manufacture of relatively small diameter poly-V pulleys.

  • Patent number: 4749375
Abstract: A flat disc 1 having a central aperture is deformed on its periphery by spin-forming the metal of the disc so that the metal projects from each side of the plane of the disc and thereby forms a cylindrical rim 6 which is parallel to the axis of the disc. One or a plurality of series of V-grooves 8 are then formed on the outer surface of the rim. The metal is spin-formed in such manner as to cause it to be laterally extruded thereby forming a rim which has a definite thickness independent of the thickness of the initial disc constituting the web of the pulley.

  • Patent number: 4551122
Abstract: A sheet steel poly-V-grooved pulley having a special cross-sectional contour is made optionally by any one of three different cold working manufacturing procedures. Special physical properties or characteristics are developed in the pulley by the manner in which the metal in the V-groove body and single and double walled terminal flanges are cold worked. The cold working involves forming in stages of manufacturing from a cup-shaped blank to the finished pulley product a stepped inner body wall surface equivalent to a tapered surface with improved substantially uniform torque transmitting strength in the grooved body from web wall to open end. Also involved in the cold working is an increase in pulley diameter in certain portions of the finished pulley and a decrease in diameter in other portions from the diameter of the side wall of the cup shaped starting blank.

  • Patent number: 4525158
Abstract: A belt-pulley drive mechanism comprising a pulley having a plurality of circumferentially extending grooves of V-shaped cross-sectional configuration, a belt adapted to be passed around the pulley and stretched under tension so that the belt is engaged with the pulley in torque transmitting relationship, the belt being formed with a plurality of longitudinally extending ridges of V-shaped cross-sectional configuration which are adapted to be engaged with the grooves in the pulley when the tension is applied to the belt. The grooves or the ridges or both are formed in a cross-section along a concave line so that a clearance is formed between the pulley and the belt when the tension is removed from the belt, the clearance being larger at a transversely central portion than at side edge portions.

  • Patent number: 4522612
Abstract: A pulley has a planar end wall and an annular wall extending axially outwardly therefrom. The annular wall is formed with belt receiving grooves and the end wall is formed with a central opening for mounting the pulley on a hub or shaft. A stamped sheet metal washer having a generally annular configuration is formed with a central hole and an integral projection extending radially outwardly from the outer edge of the washer. The washer is firmly attached to the end wall of the pulley preferably by welding or by bonding with an acrylic structural adhesive with the central hole of the washer being concentric to the central opening of the end wall. The projection is positioned to counterbalance any unbalance in the annular wall that may have developed therein during forming of the pulley.
