The devices in the body and in the door are interconnected by an electrical-cable connecting system that has a nonrotatable pivot pin fixed on the body adjacent the door, a drum rotatable about the pin, and a flexible multiconductor electrical cable wound in the closed position of the door about the drum and having an inner end fixed to the pin and connected to the devices mounted in the body and an outer end fixed to the door and connected to the devices mounted in the door. A winder connected between the body and the drum rotatably biases the drum to rotate in a direction winding the cable onto the drum and urging the door into the closed position.

A retainer is mounted on the drive motor, a plunger is slidably received into an opening of the retainer, and the drive cable is routed through the plunger and into the retainer opening. A spring is positioned between the retainer and the plunger and is movable from an expanded condition where the plunger is biased away from the retainer and the drive cable is biased away from the sliding pane, and a compressed condition where the plunger is closer to the retainer and the drive cable extends further out of the conduit.

Interengaging formations on the gear and on the drums rotationally couple the drums to the gear and a reversible drive motor coupled to the gear simultaneously rotates the gear about the axis, axially displaces the gear on the pin, winds up one of the cable sections on the surface of the respective drum, and unwinds the other of the cable sections from the surface of the respective drum.

The drive cable extends from the drive drum to the second cable fastener through the first cable guide, from the second cable fastener to the first cable fastener through the second cable guide, and from the first cable fastener to the drive drum through the first cable guide.

This system utilizes the fluid being exhausted from cylinder (60) during the closing cycle to hold open valve (30) insuring that a door or window in motion will continue to stay in motion but that the power being supplied to a moving door or window, once halted by any means, will cease. An additional series of valves is utilized to pressurize cylinder 60 for the purpose of holding a door or window in the closed position. The rate of fluid bleed at valve 50 is adjustable to control closing speed and the sensitivity at which the sliding element will stop if an object is encountered during the closing cycle or if the door/window closes completely.

The power drive mechanism includes a reversible electric motor driven friction drive wheel and is spring biased to forcibly engage this wheel with a drive/guide track that is located beneath the vehicle floor and attached to the vehicle body. The friction drive wheel rides on the drive/guide track to open and close the door and also helps guide and stabilize its sliding movement. The spring load on the friction drive wheel is limited so as to provide sliding door operation with the motor under normal conditions and allow slippage at the friction drive wheel to cease door movement when the door encounters a physical object in the door opening.
