  • Patent number: 8408268
Abstract: A label for a container is formed by wrapping a length of label material around a cylindrical mandrel and introducing heat, adhesive or other sealing means into a gap between the leading end portion of the label material and the trailing end portion as the label material is wrapped around the mandrel. The cylindrical sleeve is slid off of the mandrel and telescoped over a container passing thereunder. The container with a cylindrical sleeve therearound is then moved to a heating station which heats the label material, preferably foam polystyrene, to cause it to shrink into conformity with the contour of the container.

  • Patent number: 6558305
Abstract: A container-forming apparatus comprising a movable mandrel supporting the casing and the end member, which closes the open end of the casing and an end sealing station comprising a clamping means in order to press together the edge of the casing, said casing being transferred to the end sealing station by the mandrel, and the edge of the end member, said edge being turned longitudinally towards the casing. The clamping means comprises a piston moving back and forth in the longitudinal direction of the casing, said piston having pushing surfaces approaching the sliding axle in the pushing direction causing the clamping action. The pushing surfaces are the countersurfaces of the clamping members, said clamping members being arranged to turn towards the frame of the clamping means.

  • Patent number: 6126585
Abstract: Apparatus for lubricating and curling a rim of a paperboard container includes a housing block defining a central recess sized and configured to accept therein a rim of a paperboard container to be curled. An annular curling channel is disposed in the recess for curling the rim of the paperboard container in response to relative advancing movement between the paperboard container and the housing block. The housing block also defines an annular liquid channel concentrically disposed in surrounding relationship to the annular curling channel for distributing lubricating liquid. A porous liquid transfer ring is attached to the housing block in covering relationship to the annular liquid channel so that lubricating liquid supplied to the liquid channel comes into contact with the liquid transfer ring. The liquid transfer ring includes a circular edge surface which defines a central opening such that the liquid transfer ring extends at least partially over the curling channel.

  • Patent number: 4645480
Abstract: Sleeve fabricating apparatus for fabricating cylindrical sleeves from rectangular blanks of a heat-shrinkable thermoplastic material and for transferring the sleeves, in succession, to frustoconical mandrels of a cup-forming machine. The sleeve-fabricating apparatus has a plurality of cylindrical mandrels that are rotatably affixed to a rotary turret. The sleeves are fabricated from rectangular blanks that are cut, in succession, from a web of indefinite length as the web is being unwound from a coil at an unwind stand. Each blank is longer than the circumference of the cylindrical mandrel to which it is applied, leaving ends of the blank which overlap, and the overlapped ends are joined to one another by heat-sealing. Cups are formed by the cup-forming machine, each cup being formed from one of such sleeves and a disc. The sleeve fabricating apparatus also includes a disc forming mechanism for forming discs and applying the discs, in succession, to the cylindrical mandrels.

  • Patent number: 4536173
Abstract: A method of making cups includes forming blanks of a cup sidewall portion, lubricating the upper inside edge of the cup prior to forming the same into a substantially frusto-conical configuration by sealing its opposite edges and the application of tools which curl and then roll the upper edge of the sidewall portion to form the cup rim. The lubricant is applied to the sidewall blank by means of an applicator consisting of an arcuate wick secured between a pair of mounting plates which move the wick into engagement with each blank between the die cutter and the cup forming stations.

  • Patent number: 4452596
Abstract: A paper cup of surface-protected paperboard and an apparatus for making the same, with the paper cup including a wound cup wall and a cup bottom inserted therein. Ends of a wall blank forming the cup wall are overlapped after a winding of the wall blank, and an inner cutting edge is covered by a protective strip welded together with the cup wall. The protective strip is fashioned as a sealing strip in flat contact with the inner surface of the cup wall and is welded to the cup wall on both sides of the overlapping point. The apparatus includes a winding station wherein the wall blank is wrapped onto a winding mandrel and is welded together at the overlapping zone in a subsequent welding station. With further devices being provided for inserting a cup bottom in the thus manufactured cup wall. A positioning device for the sealing strip is associated with the winding mandrel with the positioning device lying in front or preceding the winding station.

  • Patent number: 4409045
Abstract: Method and apparatus for fabricating and seaming two-piece containers such as frustoconical cups and the like are provided which include a two-piece mandrel having retractable tip or nose piece which is coaxial in its relation to the main body of the mandrel in its extended position and retracts to an offset position. The retraction/extension path is configured to constrain the surface of the tip or nose piece to impart a progressive sealing pressure to a portion of the container side seam against the reaction surface of a seam clamp. The tip also has vacuum porting for holding a bottom blank during the container forming process and acts to seal the bottom blank in the container bottom curl and in the case of effecting heat sealed seams in the container, to position the bottom blank so as to preclude heat damage to the bottom wet line area of the container.

  • Patent number: 4334875
Abstract: A process and device forms a sleeve from a flat, rectangular blank by winding the blank around a mandrel after it has been clamped to the mandrel surface and where the clamp passes under a presser member due to the lifting of the presser member by the action of a cam. The sleeve is permanently formed by a sealing of the blank edges upon the mandrel by a sealing member.
